Nappiyasutta Disciplinary Issues

Tatra kho bhagavā kālaį¹…kataį¹ bhikkhuį¹ ārabbha bhikkhÅ« āmantesi: There the Buddha addressed the mendicants concerning the mendicant Kalandaka:

ā€œbhikkhavoā€ti. ā€œMendicants!ā€

ā€œBhadanteā€ti te bhikkhÅ« bhagavato paccassosuį¹. ā€œVenerable sir,ā€ they replied.

Bhagavā etadavoca: The Buddha said this:

ā€œIdha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu adhikaraį¹‡iko hoti, adhikaraį¹‡asamathassa na vaį¹‡į¹‡avādÄ«. ā€œFirstly, a mendicant raises disciplinary issues and doesnā€™t praise the settlement of disciplinary issues.

Yampi, bhikkhave, bhikkhu adhikaraį¹‡iko hoti adhikaraį¹‡asamathassa na vaį¹‡į¹‡avādÄ«, ayampi dhammo na piyatāya na garutāya na bhāvanāya na sāmaƱƱāya na ekÄ«bhāvāya saį¹vattati. This quality doesnā€™t conduce to fondness, respect, esteem, harmony, and unity.

Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, bhikkhu na sikkhākāmo hoti, sikkhāsamādānassa na vaį¹‡į¹‡avādÄ«. Furthermore, a mendicant doesnā€™t want to train, and doesnā€™t praise taking up the training. ā€¦

Yampi, bhikkhave, bhikkhu na sikkhākāmo hoti sikkhāsamādānassa na vaį¹‡į¹‡avādÄ«, ayampi dhammo na piyatāya na garutāya na bhāvanāya na sāmaƱƱāya na ekÄ«bhāvāya saį¹vattati.

Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, bhikkhu pāpiccho hoti, icchāvinayassa na vaį¹‡į¹‡avādÄ«. Furthermore, a mendicant has corrupt wishes, and doesnā€™t praise getting rid of wishes. ā€¦

Yampi, bhikkhave, bhikkhu pāpiccho hoti icchāvinayassa na vaį¹‡į¹‡avādÄ«, ayampi dhammo na piyatāya na garutāya na bhāvanāya na sāmaƱƱāya na ekÄ«bhāvāya saį¹vattati.

Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, bhikkhu kodhano hoti, kodhavinayassa na vaį¹‡į¹‡avādÄ«. Furthermore, a mendicant is irritable, and doesnā€™t praise getting rid of anger. ā€¦

Yampi, bhikkhave, bhikkhu kodhano hoti kodhavinayassa na vaį¹‡į¹‡avādÄ«, ayampi dhammo na piyatāya na garutāya na bhāvanāya na sāmaƱƱāya na ekÄ«bhāvāya saį¹vattati.

Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, bhikkhu makkhÄ« hoti, makkhavinayassa na vaį¹‡į¹‡avādÄ«. Furthermore, a mendicant denigrates others, and doesnā€™t praise getting rid of denigration. ā€¦

Yampi, bhikkhave, bhikkhu makkhÄ« hoti makkhavinayassa na vaį¹‡į¹‡avādÄ«, ayampi dhammo na piyatāya na garutāya na bhāvanāya na sāmaƱƱāya na ekÄ«bhāvāya saį¹vattati.

Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, bhikkhu saį¹­ho hoti, sāį¹­heyyavinayassa na vaį¹‡į¹‡avādÄ«. Furthermore, a mendicant is devious, and doesnā€™t praise getting rid of deviousness. ā€¦

Yampi, bhikkhave, bhikkhu saį¹­ho hoti sāį¹­heyyavinayassa na vaį¹‡į¹‡avādÄ«, ayampi dhammo na piyatāya na garutāya na bhāvanāya na sāmaƱƱāya na ekÄ«bhāvāya saį¹vattati.

Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, bhikkhu māyāvÄ« hoti, māyāvinayassa na vaį¹‡į¹‡avādÄ«. Furthermore, a mendicant is deceitful, and doesnā€™t praise getting rid of deceitfulness. ā€¦

Yampi, bhikkhave, bhikkhu māyāvÄ« hoti māyāvinayassa na vaį¹‡į¹‡avādÄ«, ayampi dhammo na piyatāya na garutāya na bhāvanāya na sāmaƱƱāya na ekÄ«bhāvāya saį¹vattati.

Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, bhikkhu dhammānaį¹ na nisāmakajātiko hoti, dhammanisantiyā na vaį¹‡į¹‡avādÄ«. Furthermore, a mendicant doesnā€™t pay attention to the teachings, and doesnā€™t praise attending to the teachings. ā€¦

Yampi, bhikkhave, bhikkhu dhammānaį¹ na nisāmakajātiko hoti dhammanisantiyā na vaį¹‡į¹‡avādÄ«, ayampi dhammo na piyatāya na garutāya na bhāvanāya na sāmaƱƱāya na ekÄ«bhāvāya saį¹vattati.

Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, bhikkhu na paį¹­isallÄ«no hoti, paį¹­isallānassa na vaį¹‡į¹‡avādÄ«. Furthermore, a mendicant is not in retreat, and doesnā€™t praise retreat. ā€¦

Yampi, bhikkhave, bhikkhu na paį¹­isallÄ«no hoti paį¹­isallānassa na vaį¹‡į¹‡avādÄ«, ayampi dhammo na piyatāya na garutāya na bhāvanāya na sāmaƱƱāya na ekÄ«bhāvāya saį¹vattati.

Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, bhikkhu sabrahmacārÄ«naį¹ na paį¹­isanthārako hoti, paį¹­isanthārakassa na vaį¹‡į¹‡avādÄ«. Furthermore, a mendicant is inhospitable to their spiritual companions, and doesnā€™t praise hospitality.

Yampi, bhikkhave, bhikkhu sabrahmacārÄ«naį¹ na paį¹­isanthārako hoti paį¹­isanthārakassa na vaį¹‡į¹‡avādÄ«, ayampi dhammo na piyatāya na garutāya na bhāvanāya na sāmaƱƱāya na ekÄ«bhāvāya saį¹vattati. This quality doesnā€™t conduce to fondness, respect, esteem, harmony, and unity.

EvarÅ«passa, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno kiƱcāpi evaį¹ icchā uppajjeyya: Even though a mendicant such as this might wish:

ā€˜aho vata maį¹ sabrahmacārÄ« sakkareyyuį¹ garuį¹ kareyyuį¹ māneyyuį¹ pÅ«jeyyunā€™ti, atha kho naį¹ sabrahmacārÄ« na ceva sakkaronti na garuį¹ karonti na mānenti na pÅ«jenti. ā€˜If only my spiritual companions would honor, respect, esteem, and venerate me!ā€™ Still they donā€™t honor, respect, esteem, and venerate them.

Taį¹ kissa hetu? Why is that?

Tathāhissa, bhikkhave, viĆ±Ć±Å« sabrahmacārÄ« te pāpake akusale dhamme appahÄ«ne samanupassanti. Because their sensible spiritual companions see that they havenā€™t given up those bad unskillful qualities.

Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, assakhaįø·uį¹…kassa kiƱcāpi evaį¹ icchā uppajjeyya: Suppose a wild colt was to wish:

ā€˜aho vata maį¹ manussā ājānÄ«yaį¹­į¹­hāne į¹­hapeyyuį¹, ājānÄ«yabhojanaƱca bhojeyyuį¹, ājānÄ«yaparimajjanaƱca parimajjeyyunā€™ti, atha kho naį¹ manussā na ceva ājānÄ«yaį¹­į¹­hāne į¹­hapenti na ca ājānÄ«yabhojanaį¹ bhojenti na ca ājānÄ«yaparimajjanaį¹ parimajjanti. ā€˜If only the humans would put me in a thoroughbredā€™s place, feed me a thoroughbredā€™s food, and give me a thoroughbredā€™s grooming.ā€™ Still the humans wouldnā€™t put them in a thoroughbredā€™s place, feed them a thoroughbredā€™s food, or give them a thoroughbredā€™s grooming.

Tathāhissa, bhikkhave, viĆ±Ć±Å« manussā tāni sāį¹­heyyāni kÅ«į¹­eyyāni jimheyyāni vaį¹…keyyāni appahÄ«nāni samanupassanti. Because sensible humans see that they havenā€™t given up their tricks, bluffs, ruses, and feints.

Evamevaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, evarÅ«passa bhikkhuno kiƱcāpi evaį¹ icchā uppajjeyya: In the same way, even though a mendicant such as this might wish:

ā€˜aho vata maį¹ sabrahmacārÄ« sakkareyyuį¹ garuį¹ kareyyuį¹ māneyyuį¹ pÅ«jeyyunā€™ti, atha kho naį¹ sabrahmacārÄ« na ceva sakkaronti na garuį¹ karonti na mānenti na pÅ«jenti. ā€˜If only my spiritual companions would honor, respect, esteem, and venerate me!ā€™ Still they donā€™t honor, respect, esteem, and venerate them.

Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, bhikkhu sikkhākāmo hoti, sikkhāsamādānassa vaį¹‡į¹‡avādÄ«. Furthermore, a mendicant wants to train, and praises taking up the training. ā€¦

Yampi, bhikkhave, bhikkhu sikkhākāmo hoti sikkhāsamādānassa vaį¹‡į¹‡avādÄ«, ayampi dhammo piyatāya garutāya bhāvanāya sāmaƱƱāya ekÄ«bhāvāya saį¹vattati.

Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, bhikkhu appiccho hoti, icchāvinayassa vaį¹‡į¹‡avādÄ«. Furthermore, a mendicant has few desires, and praises getting rid of desires. ā€¦

Yampi, bhikkhave, bhikkhu appiccho hoti icchāvinayassa vaį¹‡į¹‡avādÄ«, ayampi dhammo ā€¦peā€¦ ekÄ«bhāvāya saį¹vattati.

Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, bhikkhu akkodhano hoti, kodhavinayassa vaį¹‡į¹‡avādÄ«. Furthermore, a mendicant is not irritable, and praises getting rid of anger. ā€¦

Yampi, bhikkhave, bhikkhu akkodhano hoti kodhavinayassa vaį¹‡į¹‡avādÄ«, ayampi dhammo ā€¦peā€¦ ekÄ«bhāvāya saį¹vattati.
