ābhikkhavoāti. āMendicants!ā
āBhadanteāti te bhikkhÅ« bhagavato paccassosuį¹. āVenerable sir,ā they replied.
BhagavÄ etadavoca: The Buddha said this:
āIdha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu adhikaraį¹iko hoti, adhikaraį¹asamathassa na vaį¹į¹avÄdÄ«. āFirstly, a mendicant raises disciplinary issues and doesnāt praise the settlement of disciplinary issues.
Yampi, bhikkhave, bhikkhu adhikaraį¹iko hoti adhikaraį¹asamathassa na vaį¹į¹avÄdÄ«, ayampi dhammo na piyatÄya na garutÄya na bhÄvanÄya na sÄmaƱƱÄya na ekÄ«bhÄvÄya saį¹vattati. This quality doesnāt conduce to fondness, respect, esteem, harmony, and unity.
Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, bhikkhu na sikkhÄkÄmo hoti, sikkhÄsamÄdÄnassa na vaį¹į¹avÄdÄ«. Furthermore, a mendicant doesnāt want to train, and doesnāt praise taking up the training. ā¦

āaho vata maį¹ sabrahmacÄrÄ« sakkareyyuį¹ garuį¹ kareyyuį¹ mÄneyyuį¹ pÅ«jeyyunāti, atha kho naį¹ sabrahmacÄrÄ« na ceva sakkaronti na garuį¹ karonti na mÄnenti na pÅ«jenti. āIf only my spiritual companions would honor, respect, esteem, and venerate me!ā Still they donāt honor, respect, esteem, and venerate them.

kassa kiƱcÄpi evaį¹ icchÄ uppajjeyya: Suppose a wild colt was to wish:
āaho vata maį¹ manussÄ ÄjÄnÄ«yaį¹į¹hÄne į¹hapeyyuį¹, ÄjÄnÄ«yabhojanaƱca bhojeyyuį¹, ÄjÄnÄ«yaparimajjanaƱca parimajjeyyunāti, atha kho naį¹ manussÄ na ceva ÄjÄnÄ«yaį¹į¹hÄne į¹hapenti na ca ÄjÄnÄ«yabhojanaį¹ bhojenti na ca ÄjÄnÄ«yaparimajjanaį¹ parimajjanti. āIf only the humans would put me in a thoroughbredās place, feed me a thoroughbredās food, and give me a thoroughbredās grooming.ā Still the humans wouldnāt put them in a thoroughbredās place, feed them a thoroughbredās food, or give them a thoroughbredās grooming.

keyyÄni appahÄ«nÄni samanupassanti. Because sensible humans see that they havenāt given up their tricks, bluffs, ruses, and feints.
Evamevaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, evarÅ«passa bhikkhuno kiƱcÄpi evaį¹ icchÄ uppajjeyya: In the same way, even though a mendicant such as this might wish:
āaho vata maį¹ sabrahmacÄrÄ« sakkareyyuį¹ garuį¹ kareyyuį¹ mÄneyyuį¹ pÅ«jeyyunāti, atha kho naį¹ sabrahmacÄrÄ« na ceva sakkaronti na garuį¹ karonti na mÄnenti na pÅ«jenti. āIf only my spiritual companions would honor, respect, esteem, and venerate me!ā Still they donāt honor, respect, esteem, and venerate them.
