Ekaį¹ samayaį¹ ÄyasmÄ Änando rÄjagahe viharati tapodÄrÄme. At one time Venerable Änanda was staying near RÄjagaha in the Hot Springs Monastery.
Atha kho ÄyasmÄ Änando rattiyÄ paccÅ«sasamayaį¹ paccuį¹į¹hÄya yena tapodÄ tenupasaį¹
kami gattÄni parisiƱcituį¹. Then Änanda rose at the crack of dawn and went to the hot springs to bathe.
TapodÄya gattÄni parisiƱcitvÄ paccuttaritvÄ ekacÄ«varo aį¹į¹hÄsi gattÄni pubbÄpayamÄno. When he had bathed and emerged from the water he stood in one robe drying his limbs.
Kokanudopi kho paribbÄjako rattiyÄ paccÅ«sasamayaį¹ paccuį¹į¹hÄya yena tapodÄ tenupasaį¹
kami gattÄni parisiƱcituį¹. The wanderer Kokanada also rose at the crack of dawn and went to the hot springs to bathe.
AddasÄ kho kokanudo paribbÄjako Äyasmantaį¹ Änandaį¹ dÅ«ratova Ägacchantaį¹. He saw Änanda coming off in the distance
DisvÄna Äyasmantaį¹ Änandaį¹ etadavoca: and said to him,
ākvettha, Ävusoāti? āWhoās here, reverend?ā
āAhamÄvuso, bhikkhÅ«āti. āIām a mendicant, reverend.ā
āKatamesaį¹, Ävuso, bhikkhÅ«nanāti? āOf which mendicants?ā
āSamaį¹Änaį¹, Ävuso, sakyaputtiyÄnanāti. āOf the ascetics who follow the Sakyan.ā
āPuccheyyÄma mayaį¹ Äyasmantaį¹ kiƱcideva desaį¹, sace ÄyasmÄ okÄsaį¹ karoti paƱhassa veyyÄkaraį¹ÄyÄāti. āIād like to ask the venerable about a certain point, if youād take the time to answer.ā
āPucchÄvuso, sutvÄ vedissÄmÄāti. āAsk, reverend. When Iāve heard it Iāll know.ā
āKiį¹ nu kho, bho, āsassato loko, idameva saccaį¹ moghamaƱƱanātiāevaį¹diį¹į¹hi bhavanāti? āIs this your view: āThe cosmos is eternal. This is the only truth, anything else is futileā?ā
āNa kho ahaį¹, Ävuso, evaį¹diį¹į¹hi: āThatās not my view, reverend.ā
āsassato loko, idameva saccaį¹ moghamaƱƱanāāti.
āKiį¹ pana, bho, āasassato loko, idameva saccaį¹ moghamaƱƱanātiāevaį¹diį¹į¹hi bhavanāti? āThen is this your view: āThe cosmos is not eternal. This is the only truth, anything else is futileā?ā
āNa kho ahaį¹, Ävuso, evaį¹diį¹į¹hi: āThatās not my view, reverend.ā

āNa kho ahaį¹, Ävuso, na jÄnÄmi na passÄmi. āThatās not so, reverend.
JÄnÄmahaį¹, Ävuso, passÄmÄ«āti. I do know and see.ā
āāKiį¹ nu kho, bho, sassato loko, idameva saccaį¹ moghamaƱƱantiāāWhen asked about all these points, you say thatās not your view.

JÄnÄmahaį¹, Ävuso, passÄmÄ«āti vadesi. I do know and see.ā
YathÄ kathaį¹ panÄvuso, imassa bhÄsitassa attho daį¹į¹habboāti? How then should we see the meaning of this statement?ā
āāSassato loko, idameva saccaį¹ moghamaƱƱanāti kho, Ävuso, diį¹į¹higatametaį¹. āāThe cosmos is eternal. This is the only truth, anything else is futile:ā thatās a misconception.

I know and see the scope of convictions, the scope of grounds for views, fixation on views, obsession with views, the origin of views, and the uprooting of views.
Tamahaį¹ jÄnanto tamahaį¹ passanto kyÄhaį¹ vakkhÄmi: Knowing and seeing thus, why should I say:
āna jÄnÄmi na passÄmÄ«āti? āI neither know nor see?ā
JÄnÄmahaį¹, Ävuso, passÄmÄ«āti. I do know and see.ā
āKo nÄmo ÄyasmÄ, kathaƱca panÄyasmantaį¹ sabrahmacÄrÄ« jÄnantÄ«āti? āWhat is the venerableās name? And how are you known among your spiritual companions?ā
āāÄnandoāti kho me, Ävuso, nÄmaį¹. āReverend, my name is Änanda.
āÄnandoāti ca pana maį¹ sabrahmacÄrÄ« jÄnantÄ«āti. And thatās how Iām known among my spiritual companions.ā
āMahÄcariyena vata kira, bho, saddhiį¹ mantayamÄnÄ na jÄnimha: āGoodness! I had no idea I was consulting such a great tutor as
āÄyasmÄ Änandoāti. Venerable Änanda!
Sace hi mayaį¹ jÄneyyÄma: If I had known who
āayaį¹ ÄyasmÄ Änandoāti, ettakampi no nappaį¹ibhÄyeyya. you were, I wouldnāt have said so much.
Khamatu ca me ÄyasmÄ Änandoāti. May Venerable Änanda please forgive me.ā
