Dhovanasutta The Bone-Washing Ceremony
āAtthi, bhikkhave, dakkhiį¹esu janapadesu dhovanaį¹ nÄma. āMendicants, in the southern lands there is a ceremony named ābone-washingā.
Tattha hoti annampi pÄnampi khajjampi bhojjampi leyyampi peyyampi naccampi gÄ«tampi vÄditampi. There they have food, drink, snacks, meals, refreshments, and beverages, as well as dancing, singing, and music.
Atthetaį¹, bhikkhave, dhovanaį¹; ānetaį¹ natthÄ«āti vadÄmi. There is such a washing, I donāt deny it.
TaƱca kho etaį¹, bhikkhave, dhovanaį¹ hÄ«naį¹ gammaį¹ pothujjanikaį¹ anariyaį¹ anatthasaį¹hitaį¹ na nibbidÄya na virÄgÄya na nirodhÄya na upasamÄya na abhiƱƱÄya na sambodhÄya na nibbÄnÄya saį¹vattati. But that washing is low, crude, ordinary, ignoble, and pointless. It doesnāt lead to disillusionment, dispassion, cessation, peace, insight, awakening, and extinguishment.
AhaƱca kho, bhikkhave, ariyaį¹ dhovanaį¹ desessÄmi, yaį¹ dhovanaį¹ ekantanibbidÄya virÄgÄya nirodhÄya upasamÄya abhiƱƱÄya sambodhÄya nibbÄnÄya saį¹vattati, yaį¹ dhovanaį¹ Ägamma jÄtidhammÄ sattÄ jÄtiyÄ parimuccanti, jarÄdhammÄ sattÄ jarÄya parimuccanti, maraį¹adhammÄ sattÄ maraį¹ena parimuccanti, sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupÄyÄsadhammÄ sattÄ sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupÄyÄsehi parimuccanti. I will teach a noble washing that leads solely to disillusionment, dispassion, cessation, peace, insight, awakening, and extinguishment. Relying on that washing, sentient beings who are liable to rebirth, old age, and death, to sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress are freed from all these things.
Taį¹ suį¹Ätha, sÄdhukaį¹ manasi karotha, bhÄsissÄmÄ«āti. Listen and apply your mind well, I will speak.ā
āEvaį¹, bhanteāti kho te bhikkhÅ« bhagavato paccassosuį¹. āYes, sir,ā they replied.
BhagavÄ etadavoca: The Buddha said this:
āKatamaƱca taį¹, bhikkhave, ariyaį¹ dhovanaį¹, yaį¹ dhovanaį¹ ekantanibbidÄya virÄgÄya nirodhÄya upasamÄya abhiƱƱÄya sambodhÄya nibbÄnÄya saį¹vattati, yaį¹ dhovanaį¹ Ägamma jÄtidhammÄ sattÄ jÄtiyÄ parimuccanti, jarÄdhammÄ sattÄ jarÄya parimuccanti, maraį¹adhammÄ sattÄ maraį¹ena parimuccanti, sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupÄyÄsadhammÄ sattÄ sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupÄyÄsehi parimuccanti? āAnd what is that noble washing?
SammÄdiį¹į¹hikassa, bhikkhave, micchÄdiį¹į¹hi niddhotÄ hoti; For one of right view, wrong view is washed away.
ye ca micchÄdiį¹į¹hipaccayÄ aneke pÄpakÄ akusalÄ dhammÄ sambhavanti te cassa niddhotÄ honti; And the many bad, unskillful qualities that arise because of wrong view are washed away.
sammÄdiį¹į¹hipaccayÄ ca aneke kusalÄ dhammÄ bhÄvanÄpÄripÅ«riį¹ gacchanti. And because of right view, many skillful qualities are fully developed.
