Dhovanasutta The Bone-Washing Ceremony

ā€œAtthi, bhikkhave, dakkhiį¹‡esu janapadesu dhovanaį¹ nāma. ā€œMendicants, in the southern lands there is a ceremony named ā€˜bone-washingā€™.

Tattha hoti annampi pānampi khajjampi bhojjampi leyyampi peyyampi naccampi gītampi vāditampi. There they have food, drink, snacks, meals, refreshments, and beverages, as well as dancing, singing, and music.

Atthetaį¹, bhikkhave, dhovanaį¹; ā€˜netaį¹ natthÄ«ā€™ti vadāmi. There is such a washing, I donā€™t deny it.

TaƱca kho etaį¹, bhikkhave, dhovanaį¹ hÄ«naį¹ gammaį¹ pothujjanikaį¹ anariyaį¹ anatthasaį¹hitaį¹ na nibbidāya na virāgāya na nirodhāya na upasamāya na abhiƱƱāya na sambodhāya na nibbānāya saį¹vattati. But that washing is low, crude, ordinary, ignoble, and pointless. It doesnā€™t lead to disillusionment, dispassion, cessation, peace, insight, awakening, and extinguishment.

AhaƱca kho, bhikkhave, ariyaį¹ dhovanaį¹ desessāmi, yaį¹ dhovanaį¹ ekantanibbidāya virāgāya nirodhāya upasamāya abhiƱƱāya sambodhāya nibbānāya saį¹vattati, yaį¹ dhovanaį¹ āgamma jātidhammā sattā jātiyā parimuccanti, jarādhammā sattā jarāya parimuccanti, maraį¹‡adhammā sattā maraį¹‡ena parimuccanti, sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsadhammā sattā sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsehi parimuccanti. I will teach a noble washing that leads solely to disillusionment, dispassion, cessation, peace, insight, awakening, and extinguishment. Relying on that washing, sentient beings who are liable to rebirth, old age, and death, to sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress are freed from all these things.

Taį¹ suį¹‡Ätha, sādhukaį¹ manasi karotha, bhāsissāmÄ«ā€ti. Listen and apply your mind well, I will speak.ā€

ā€œEvaį¹, bhanteā€ti kho te bhikkhÅ« bhagavato paccassosuį¹. ā€œYes, sir,ā€ they replied.

Bhagavā etadavoca: The Buddha said this:

ā€œKatamaƱca taį¹, bhikkhave, ariyaį¹ dhovanaį¹, yaį¹ dhovanaį¹ ekantanibbidāya virāgāya nirodhāya upasamāya abhiƱƱāya sambodhāya nibbānāya saį¹vattati, yaį¹ dhovanaį¹ āgamma jātidhammā sattā jātiyā parimuccanti, jarādhammā sattā jarāya parimuccanti, maraį¹‡adhammā sattā maraį¹‡ena parimuccanti, sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsadhammā sattā sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsehi parimuccanti? ā€œAnd what is that noble washing?

Sammādiį¹į¹hikassa, bhikkhave, micchādiį¹į¹hi niddhotā hoti; For one of right view, wrong view is washed away.

ye ca micchādiį¹į¹hipaccayā aneke pāpakā akusalā dhammā sambhavanti te cassa niddhotā honti; And the many bad, unskillful qualities that arise because of wrong view are washed away.

sammādiį¹į¹hipaccayā ca aneke kusalā dhammā bhāvanāpāripÅ«riį¹ gacchanti. And because of right view, many skillful qualities are fully developed.

Sammāsaį¹…kappassa, bhikkhave, micchāsaį¹…kappo niddhoto hoti ā€¦peā€¦ For one of right thought, wrong thought is washed away. ā€¦

sammāƱāį¹‡issa, bhikkhave, micchāƱāį¹‡aį¹ niddhotaį¹ hoti ā€¦peā€¦. For one of right knowledge, wrong knowledge is washed away. ā€¦

Sammāvimuttissa, bhikkhave, micchāvimutti niddhotā hoti; For one of right freedom, wrong freedom is washed away.

ye ca micchāvimuttipaccayā aneke pāpakā akusalā dhammā sambhavanti te cassa niddhotā honti; And the many bad, unskillful qualities that arise because of wrong freedom are washed away.

sammāvimuttipaccayā ca aneke kusalā dhammā bhāvanāpāripÅ«riį¹ gacchanti. And because of right freedom, many skillful qualities are fully developed.

Idaį¹ kho taį¹, bhikkhave, ariyaį¹ dhovanaį¹ ekantanibbidāya virāgāya nirodhāya upasamāya abhiƱƱāya sambodhāya nibbānāya saį¹vattati, yaį¹ dhovanaį¹ āgamma jātidhammā sattā jātiyā parimuccanti, jarādhammā sattā jarāya parimuccanti, maraį¹‡adhammā sattā maraį¹‡ena parimuccanti, sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsadhammā sattā sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsehi parimuccantÄ«ā€ti. This is the noble washing that leads solely to disillusionment, dispassion, cessation, peace, insight, awakening, and extinguishment. Relying on this washing, sentient beings who are liable to rebirth, old age, and death, to sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress are freed from all these things.ā€
