Tena kho pana samayena jÄį¹ussoį¹i brÄhmaį¹o tadahuposathe sÄ«saį¹nhÄto navaį¹ khomayugaį¹ nivattho allakusamuį¹į¹hiį¹ ÄdÄya bhagavato avidÅ«re ekamantaį¹ į¹hito hoti. Now, at that time it was the sabbath. The brahmin JÄnussoį¹i had bathed his head and dressed in a new pair of linen robes. Holding a handful of fresh grass, he stood to one side not far from the Buddha.
AddasÄ kho bhagavÄ jÄį¹ussoį¹iį¹ brÄhmaį¹aį¹ tadahuposathe sÄ«saį¹nhÄtaį¹ navaį¹ khomayugaį¹ nivatthaį¹ allakusamuį¹į¹hiį¹ ÄdÄya ekamantaį¹ į¹hitaį¹. The Buddha saw him,
DisvÄna jÄį¹ussoį¹iį¹ brÄhmaį¹aį¹ etadavoca: and said,
ākiį¹ nu tvaį¹, brÄhmaį¹a, tadahuposathe sÄ«saį¹nhÄto navaį¹ khomayugaį¹ nivattho allakusamuį¹į¹hiį¹ ÄdÄya ekamantaį¹ į¹hito? āBrahmin, why have you bathed your head and dressed in a new pair of linen robes? Why are you standing to one side holding a handful of fresh grass?
Kiį¹ nvajja brÄhmaį¹akulassÄāti? Whatās going on today with the brahmin clan?ā
āPaccorohaį¹Ä«, bho gotama, ajja brÄhmaį¹akulassÄāti. āWorthy Gotama, today is the ceremony of descent for the brahmin clan.ā
āYathÄ kathaį¹ pana, brÄhmaį¹a, brÄhmaį¹Änaį¹ paccorohaį¹Ä« hotÄ«āti? āBut how do the brahmins observe the ceremony of descent?ā
āIdha, bho gotama, brÄhmaį¹Ä tadahuposathe sÄ«saį¹nhÄtÄ navaį¹ khomayugaį¹ nivatthÄ allena gomayena pathaviį¹ opuƱjitvÄ haritehi kusehi pattharitvÄ antarÄ ca velaį¹ antarÄ ca agyÄgÄraį¹ seyyaį¹ kappenti. āWell, worthy Gotama, on the sabbath the brahmins bathe their heads and dress in a new pair of linen robes. They make a heap of fresh cow dung and spread it with green grass. Then they make their beds between the boundary and the fire chamber.
Te taį¹ rattiį¹ tikkhattuį¹ paccuį¹į¹hÄya paƱjalikÄ aggiį¹ namassanti: That night they rise three times and worship the fire with joined palms:
āpaccorohÄma bhavantaį¹, paccorohÄma bhavantanāti. āWe descend, lord! We descend, lord!ā
Bahukena ca sappitelanavanÄ«tena aggiį¹ santappenti. And they serve the fire with abundant ghee, oil, and butter.
TassÄ ca rattiyÄ accayena paį¹Ä«tena khÄdanÄ«yena bhojanÄ«yena brÄhmaį¹e santappenti. And when the night has passed they serve the brahmins with delicious fresh and cooked foods.
Evaį¹, bho gotama, brÄhmaį¹Änaį¹ paccorohaį¹Ä« hotÄ«āti. Thatās how the brahmins observe the ceremony of descent.ā
āAƱƱathÄ kho, brÄhmaį¹a, brÄhmaį¹Änaį¹ paccorohaį¹Ä« hoti, aƱƱathÄ ca pana ariyassa vinaye paccorohaį¹Ä« hotÄ«āti. āThe ceremony of descent observed by the brahmins is quite different from that observed in the training of the Noble One.ā
āYathÄ kathaį¹ pana, bho gotama, ariyassa vinaye paccorohaį¹Ä« hoti? āBut worthy Gotama, how is the ceremony of descent observed in the training of the Noble One?
SÄdhu me bhavaį¹ gotamo tathÄ dhammaį¹ desetu yathÄ ariyassa vinaye paccorohaį¹Ä« hotÄ«āti. Worthy Gotama, please teach me this.ā
āTena hi, brÄhmaį¹a, suį¹Ähi, sÄdhukaį¹ manasi karohi; bhÄsissÄmÄ«āti. āWell then, brahmin, listen and apply your mind well, I will speak.ā
āEvaį¹, bhoāti kho jÄį¹ussoį¹i brÄhmaį¹o bhagavato paccassosi. āYes, worthy sir,ā JÄnussoį¹i replied.
BhagavÄ etadavoca: The Buddha said this:
āIdha, brÄhmaį¹a, ariyasÄvako iti paį¹isaƱcikkhati: āItās when a noble disciple reflects:
āmicchÄdiį¹į¹hiyÄ kho pÄpako vipÄko āWrong view has a bad result
diį¹į¹he ceva dhamme abhisamparÄyaƱcÄāti. in both this life and the next.ā
So iti paį¹isaį¹
khÄya micchÄdiį¹į¹hiį¹ pajahati; Reflecting like this, they give up wrong view,
micchÄdiį¹į¹hiyÄ paccorohati. they descend from wrong view.

kappassa kho pÄpako vipÄkoāāWrong thought has a bad result
diį¹į¹he ceva dhamme abhisamparÄyaƱcÄāti. in both this life and the next.ā

diį¹į¹he ceva dhamme abhisamparÄyaƱcÄāti. in both this life and the next.ā

micchÄkammantÄ paccorohati. they descend from wrong action.

micchÄsamÄdhimhÄ paccorohati. they descend from wrong immersion.

diį¹į¹he ceva dhamme abhisamparÄyaƱcÄāti. in both this life and the next.ā
So iti paį¹isaį¹
khÄya micchÄvimuttiį¹ pajahati; Reflecting like this, they give up wrong freedom,
micchÄvimuttiyÄ paccorohati. they descend from wrong freedom.
Evaį¹ kho, brÄhmaį¹a, ariyassa vinaye paccorohaį¹Ä« hotÄ«āti. This is the ceremony of descent in the training of the Noble One.ā
āAƱƱathÄ, bho gotama, brÄhmaį¹Änaį¹ paccorohaį¹Ä«, aƱƱathÄ ca pana ariyassa vinaye paccorohaį¹Ä« hoti. āThe ceremony of descent observed by the brahmins is quite different from that observed in the training of the Noble One.
ImissÄ ca, bho gotama, ariyassa vinaye paccorohaį¹iyÄ brÄhmaį¹Änaį¹ paccorohaį¹Ä« kalaį¹ nÄgghati soįø·asiį¹. And, worthy Gotama, the ceremony of descent observed by the brahmins is not worth a sixteenth part of a master of the ceremony of descent observed in the training of the Noble One.
Abhikkantaį¹, bho gotama ā¦peā¦ Excellent, worthy Gotama! ā¦
upÄsakaį¹ maį¹ bhavaį¹ gotamo dhÄretu ajjatagge pÄį¹upetaį¹ saraį¹aį¹ gatanāti. From this day forth, may the worthy Gotama remember me as a lay follower who has gone for refuge for life.ā
