Paį¹­hamapaccorohaį¹‡Ä«sutta The Ceremony of Descent (1st)

Tena kho pana samayena jāį¹‡ussoį¹‡i brāhmaį¹‡o tadahuposathe sÄ«saį¹nhāto navaį¹ khomayugaį¹ nivattho allakusamuį¹­į¹­hiį¹ ādāya bhagavato avidÅ«re ekamantaį¹ į¹­hito hoti. Now, at that time it was the sabbath. The brahmin Jānussoį¹‡i had bathed his head and dressed in a new pair of linen robes. Holding a handful of fresh grass, he stood to one side not far from the Buddha.

Addasā kho bhagavā jāį¹‡ussoį¹‡iį¹ brāhmaį¹‡aį¹ tadahuposathe sÄ«saį¹nhātaį¹ navaį¹ khomayugaį¹ nivatthaį¹ allakusamuį¹­į¹­hiį¹ ādāya ekamantaį¹ į¹­hitaį¹. The Buddha saw him,

Disvāna jāį¹‡ussoį¹‡iį¹ brāhmaį¹‡aį¹ etadavoca: and said,

ā€œkiį¹ nu tvaį¹, brāhmaį¹‡a, tadahuposathe sÄ«saį¹nhāto navaį¹ khomayugaį¹ nivattho allakusamuį¹­į¹­hiį¹ ādāya ekamantaį¹ į¹­hito? ā€œBrahmin, why have you bathed your head and dressed in a new pair of linen robes? Why are you standing to one side holding a handful of fresh grass?

Kiį¹ nvajja brāhmaį¹‡akulassāā€ti? Whatā€™s going on today with the brahmin clan?ā€

ā€œPaccorohaį¹‡Ä«, bho gotama, ajja brāhmaį¹‡akulassāā€ti. ā€œWorthy Gotama, today is the ceremony of descent for the brahmin clan.ā€

ā€œYathā kathaį¹ pana, brāhmaį¹‡a, brāhmaį¹‡Änaį¹ paccorohaį¹‡Ä« hotÄ«ā€ti? ā€œBut how do the brahmins observe the ceremony of descent?ā€

ā€œIdha, bho gotama, brāhmaį¹‡Ä tadahuposathe sÄ«saį¹nhātā navaį¹ khomayugaį¹ nivatthā allena gomayena pathaviį¹ opuƱjitvā haritehi kusehi pattharitvā antarā ca velaį¹ antarā ca agyāgāraį¹ seyyaį¹ kappenti. ā€œWell, worthy Gotama, on the sabbath the brahmins bathe their heads and dress in a new pair of linen robes. They make a heap of fresh cow dung and spread it with green grass. Then they make their beds between the boundary and the fire chamber.

Te taį¹ rattiį¹ tikkhattuį¹ paccuį¹­į¹­hāya paƱjalikā aggiį¹ namassanti: That night they rise three times and worship the fire with joined palms:

ā€˜paccorohāma bhavantaį¹, paccorohāma bhavantanā€™ti. ā€˜We descend, lord! We descend, lord!ā€™

Bahukena ca sappitelanavanÄ«tena aggiį¹ santappenti. And they serve the fire with abundant ghee, oil, and butter.

Tassā ca rattiyā accayena paį¹‡Ä«tena khādanÄ«yena bhojanÄ«yena brāhmaį¹‡e santappenti. And when the night has passed they serve the brahmins with delicious fresh and cooked foods.

Evaį¹, bho gotama, brāhmaį¹‡Änaį¹ paccorohaį¹‡Ä« hotÄ«ā€ti. Thatā€™s how the brahmins observe the ceremony of descent.ā€

ā€œAƱƱathā kho, brāhmaį¹‡a, brāhmaį¹‡Änaį¹ paccorohaį¹‡Ä« hoti, aƱƱathā ca pana ariyassa vinaye paccorohaį¹‡Ä« hotÄ«ā€ti. ā€œThe ceremony of descent observed by the brahmins is quite different from that observed in the training of the Noble One.ā€

ā€œYathā kathaį¹ pana, bho gotama, ariyassa vinaye paccorohaį¹‡Ä« hoti? ā€œBut worthy Gotama, how is the ceremony of descent observed in the training of the Noble One?

Sādhu me bhavaį¹ gotamo tathā dhammaį¹ desetu yathā ariyassa vinaye paccorohaį¹‡Ä« hotÄ«ā€ti. Worthy Gotama, please teach me this.ā€

ā€œTena hi, brāhmaį¹‡a, suį¹‡Ähi, sādhukaį¹ manasi karohi; bhāsissāmÄ«ā€ti. ā€œWell then, brahmin, listen and apply your mind well, I will speak.ā€

ā€œEvaį¹, bhoā€ti kho jāį¹‡ussoį¹‡i brāhmaį¹‡o bhagavato paccassosi. ā€œYes, worthy sir,ā€ Jānussoį¹‡i replied.

Bhagavā etadavoca: The Buddha said this:

ā€œIdha, brāhmaį¹‡a, ariyasāvako iti paį¹­isaƱcikkhati: ā€œItā€™s when a noble disciple reflects:

ā€˜micchādiį¹­į¹­hiyā kho pāpako vipāko ā€˜Wrong view has a bad result

diį¹­į¹­he ceva dhamme abhisamparāyaƱcāā€™ti. in both this life and the next.ā€™

So iti paį¹­isaį¹…khāya micchādiį¹­į¹­hiį¹ pajahati; Reflecting like this, they give up wrong view,

micchādiį¹­į¹­hiyā paccorohati. they descend from wrong view.

ā€¦ ā€˜Micchāsaį¹…kappassa kho pāpako vipākoā€”ā€˜Wrong thought has a bad result

diį¹­į¹­he ceva dhamme abhisamparāyaƱcāā€™ti. in both this life and the next.ā€™

So iti paį¹­isaį¹…khāya micchāsaį¹…kappaį¹ pajahati; Reflecting like this, they give up wrong thought,

micchāsaį¹…kappā paccorohati. they descend from wrong thought.

ā€¦ ā€˜Micchāvācāya kho pāpako vipākoā€”ā€˜Wrong speech has a bad result

diį¹­į¹­he ceva dhamme abhisamparāyaƱcāā€™ti. in both this life and the next.ā€™

So iti paį¹­isaį¹…khāya micchāvācaį¹ pajahati; Reflecting like this, they give up wrong speech,

micchāvācāya paccorohati. they descend from wrong speech.

ā€¦ ā€˜Micchākammantassa kho pāpako vipākoā€”ā€˜Wrong action has a bad result

diį¹­į¹­he ceva dhamme abhisamparāyaƱcāā€™ti. in both this life and the next.ā€™

So iti paį¹­isaį¹…khāya micchākammantaį¹ pajahati; Reflecting like this, they give up wrong action,

micchākammantā paccorohati. they descend from wrong action.

ā€¦ ā€˜MicchāājÄ«vassa kho pāpako vipākoā€”ā€˜Wrong livelihood has a bad result

diį¹­į¹­he ceva dhamme abhisamparāyaƱcāā€™ti. in both this life and the next.ā€™

So iti paį¹­isaį¹…khāya micchāājÄ«vaį¹ pajahati; Reflecting like this, they give up wrong livelihood,

micchāājīvā paccorohati. they descend from wrong livelihood.

ā€¦ ā€˜Micchāvāyāmassa kho pāpako vipākoā€”ā€˜Wrong effort has a bad result

diį¹­į¹­he ceva dhamme abhisamparāyaƱcāā€™ti. in both this life and the next.ā€™

So iti paį¹­isaį¹…khāya micchāvāyāmaį¹ pajahati; Reflecting like this, they give up wrong effort,

micchāvāyāmā paccorohati. they descend from wrong effort.

ā€¦ ā€˜Micchāsatiyā kho pāpako vipākoā€”ā€˜Wrong mindfulness has a bad result

diį¹­į¹­he ceva dhamme abhisamparāyaƱcāā€™ti. in both this life and the next.ā€™

So iti paį¹­isaį¹…khāya micchāsatiį¹ pajahati; Reflecting like this, they give up wrong mindfulness,

micchāsatiyā paccorohati. they descend from wrong mindfulness.

ā€¦ ā€˜Micchāsamādhissa kho pāpako vipākoā€”ā€˜Wrong immersion has a bad result

diį¹­į¹­he ceva dhamme abhisamparāyaƱcāā€™ti. in both this life and the next.ā€™

So iti paį¹­isaį¹…khāya micchāsamādhiį¹ pajahati; Reflecting like this, they give up wrong immersion,

micchāsamādhimhā paccorohati. they descend from wrong immersion.

ā€¦ ā€˜MicchāƱāį¹‡assa kho pāpako vipākoā€”ā€˜Wrong knowledge has a bad result

diį¹­į¹­he ceva dhamme abhisamparāyaƱcāā€™ti. in both this life and the next.ā€™

So iti paį¹­isaį¹…khāya micchāƱāį¹‡aį¹ pajahati; Reflecting like this, they give up wrong knowledge,

micchāƱāį¹‡amhā paccorohati. they descend from wrong knowledge.

ā€¦ ā€˜Micchāvimuttiyā kho pāpako vipākoā€”ā€˜Wrong freedom has a bad result

diį¹­į¹­he ceva dhamme abhisamparāyaƱcāā€™ti. in both this life and the next.ā€™

So iti paį¹­isaį¹…khāya micchāvimuttiį¹ pajahati; Reflecting like this, they give up wrong freedom,

micchāvimuttiyā paccorohati. they descend from wrong freedom.

Evaį¹ kho, brāhmaį¹‡a, ariyassa vinaye paccorohaį¹‡Ä« hotÄ«ā€ti. This is the ceremony of descent in the training of the Noble One.ā€

ā€œAƱƱathā, bho gotama, brāhmaį¹‡Änaį¹ paccorohaį¹‡Ä«, aƱƱathā ca pana ariyassa vinaye paccorohaį¹‡Ä« hoti. ā€œThe ceremony of descent observed by the brahmins is quite different from that observed in the training of the Noble One.

Imissā ca, bho gotama, ariyassa vinaye paccorohaį¹‡iyā brāhmaį¹‡Änaį¹ paccorohaį¹‡Ä« kalaį¹ nāgghati soįø·asiį¹. And, worthy Gotama, the ceremony of descent observed by the brahmins is not worth a sixteenth part of a master of the ceremony of descent observed in the training of the Noble One.

Abhikkantaį¹, bho gotama ā€¦peā€¦ Excellent, worthy Gotama! ā€¦

upāsakaį¹ maį¹ bhavaį¹ gotamo dhāretu ajjatagge pāį¹‡upetaį¹ saraį¹‡aį¹ gatanā€ti. From this day forth, may the worthy Gotama remember me as a lay follower who has gone for refuge for life.ā€
