Dutiyaadhammasutta Bad Principles (2nd)

ā€œAdhammo ca, bhikkhave, veditabbo dhammo ca; ā€œMendicants, you should know bad principles and good principles.

anattho ca veditabbo attho ca. And you should know bad results and good results.

AdhammaƱca viditvā dhammaƱca, anatthaƱca viditvā atthaƱca yathā dhammo yathā attho tathā paį¹­ipajjitabbanā€ti. Knowing these things, your practice should follow the good principles with good results.ā€

Idamavoca bhagavā. That is what the Buddha said.

Idaį¹ vatvāna sugato uį¹­į¹­hāyāsanā vihāraį¹ pāvisi. When he had spoken, the Holy One got up from his seat and entered his dwelling.

Atha kho tesaį¹ bhikkhÅ«naį¹ acirapakkantassa bhagavato etadahosi: Soon after the Buddha left, those mendicants considered,

ā€œidaį¹ kho no, āvuso, bhagavā saį¹…khittena uddesaį¹ uddisitvā vitthārena atthaį¹ avibhajitvā uį¹­į¹­hāyāsanā vihāraį¹ paviį¹­į¹­ho: ā€œThe Buddha gave this brief summary recital, then entered his dwelling without explaining the meaning in detail.

ā€˜adhammo ca, bhikkhave, veditabbo dhammo ca; ā€˜You should know bad principles and good principles.

anattho ca veditabbo attho ca. And you should know bad results and good results.

AdhammaƱca viditvā dhammaƱca, anatthaƱca viditvā atthaƱca yathā dhammo yathā attho tathā paį¹­ipajjitabbanā€™ti. Knowing these things, your practice should follow the good principles with good results.ā€™

Ko nu kho imassa bhagavatā saį¹…khittena uddesassa uddiį¹­į¹­hassa vitthārena atthaį¹ avibhattassa vitthārena atthaį¹ vibhajeyyāā€ti? Who can explain in detail the meaning of this brief summary recital given by the Buddha?ā€

Atha kho tesaį¹ bhikkhÅ«naį¹ etadahosi: Then those mendicants thought,

ā€œayaį¹ kho āyasmā mahākaccāno satthu ceva saį¹vaį¹‡į¹‡ito, sambhāvito ca viĆ±Ć±Å«naį¹ sabrahmacārÄ«naį¹. ā€œThis Venerable Mahākaccāna is praised by the Buddha and esteemed by his sensible spiritual companions.

Pahoti cāyasmā mahākaccāno imassa bhagavatā saį¹…khittena uddesassa uddiį¹­į¹­hassa vitthārena atthaį¹ avibhattassa vitthārena atthaį¹ vibhajituį¹. He is capable of explaining in detail the meaning of this brief summary recital given by the Buddha.

YannÅ«na mayaį¹ yenāyasmā mahākaccāno tenupasaį¹…kameyyāma; upasaį¹…kamitvā āyasmantaį¹ mahākaccānaį¹ etamatthaį¹ puccheyyāma. Letā€™s go to him, and ask him about this matter.

Yathā no āyasmā mahākaccāno byākarissati tathā naį¹ dhāressāmāā€ti. As he answers, so weā€™ll remember it.ā€

Atha kho te bhikkhÅ« yenāyasmā mahākaccāno tenupasaį¹…kamiį¹su; upasaį¹…kamitvā āyasmatā mahākaccānena saddhiį¹ sammodiį¹su. Then those mendicants went to Mahākaccāna, and exchanged greetings with him.

SammodanÄ«yaį¹ kathaį¹ sāraį¹‡Ä«yaį¹ vÄ«tisāretvā ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«diį¹su. Ekamantaį¹ nisinnā kho te bhikkhÅ« āyasmantaį¹ mahākaccānaį¹ etadavocuį¹: When the greetings and polite conversation were over, they sat down to one side. They told him what had happened, and said,

ā€œIdaį¹ kho no, āvuso kaccāna, bhagavā saį¹…khittena uddesaį¹ uddisitvā vitthārena atthaį¹ avibhajitvā uį¹­į¹­hāyāsanā vihāraį¹ paviį¹­į¹­ho:

ā€˜adhammo ca, bhikkhave, veditabbo dhammo ca;

anattho ca veditabbo attho ca.

Yathā no āyasmā mahākaccāno byākarissati tathā naį¹ dhāressāmāā€™ti.

Vibhajatu āyasmā mahākaccānoā€ti. ā€œMay Venerable Mahākaccāna please explain this.ā€

ā€œSeyyathāpi, āvuso, puriso sāratthiko sāraį¹ gavesÄ« sārapariyesanaį¹ caramāno mahato rukkhassa tiį¹­į¹­hato sāravato atikkammeva mÅ«laį¹ atikkamma khandhaį¹ sākhāpalāse sāraį¹ pariyesitabbaį¹ maƱƱeyya. ā€œReverends, suppose there was a person in need of heartwood. And while wandering in search of heartwood heā€™d come across a large tree standing with heartwood. But heā€™d pass over the roots and trunk, imagining that the heartwood should be sought in the branches and leaves.

Evaį¹sampadamidaį¹ āyasmantānaį¹ satthari sammukhÄ«bhÅ«te taį¹ bhagavantaį¹ atisitvā amhe etamatthaį¹ paį¹­ipucchitabbaį¹ maƱƱatha. Such is the consequence for the venerables. Though you were face to face with the Buddha, you overlooked him, imagining that you should ask me about this matter.

So hāvuso, bhagavā jānaį¹ jānāti passaį¹ passati cakkhubhÅ«to Ʊāį¹‡abhÅ«to dhammabhÅ«to brahmabhÅ«to vattā pavattā atthassa ninnetā amatassa dātā dhammassāmÄ« tathāgato. For he is the Buddha, the one who knows and sees. He is vision, he is knowledge, he is the manifestation of principle, he is the manifestation of divinity. He is the teacher, the proclaimer, the elucidator of meaning, the bestower of freedom from death, the lord of truth, the Realized One.

So ceva panetassa kālo ahosi yaį¹ tumhe bhagavantaį¹yeva upasaį¹…kamitvā etamatthaį¹ paį¹­ipuccheyyātha. That was the time to approach the Buddha and ask about this matter.

Yathā vo bhagavā byākareyya tathā naį¹ dhāreyyāthāā€ti. You should have remembered it in line with the Buddhaā€™s answer.ā€

ā€œAddhā, āvuso kaccāna, bhagavā jānaį¹ jānāti passaį¹ passati cakkhubhÅ«to Ʊāį¹‡abhÅ«to dhammabhÅ«to brahmabhÅ«to vattā pavattā atthassa ninnetā amatassa dātā dhammassāmÄ« tathāgato. ā€œCertainly he is the Buddha, the one who knows and sees. He is vision, he is knowledge, he is the manifestation of principle, he is the manifestation of divinity. He is the teacher, the proclaimer, the elucidator of meaning, the bestower of freedom from death, the lord of truth, the Realized One.

Api cāyasmā mahākaccāno satthu ceva saį¹vaį¹‡į¹‡ito, sambhāvito ca viĆ±Ć±Å«naį¹ sabrahmacārÄ«naį¹. Still, Venerable Mahākaccāna is praised by the Buddha and esteemed by his sensible spiritual companions.

Pahoti cāyasmā mahākaccāno imassa bhagavatā saį¹…khittena uddesassa uddiį¹­į¹­hassa vitthārena atthaį¹ avibhattassa vitthārena atthaį¹ vibhajituį¹. He is capable of explaining in detail the meaning of this brief summary recital given by the Buddha.

Vibhajatāyasmā mahākaccāno agaruį¹ karitvāā€ti. Please explain this, if itā€™s no trouble.ā€

ā€œTena hāvuso, suį¹‡Ätha, sādhukaį¹ manasi karotha, bhāsissāmÄ«ā€ti. ā€œWell then, reverends, listen and apply your mind well, I will speak.ā€

ā€œEvaį¹, āvusoā€ti kho te bhikkhÅ« āyasmato mahākaccānassa paccassosuį¹. ā€œYes, reverend,ā€ they replied.

Athāyasmā mahākaccāno etadavoca: Mahākaccāna said this:

ā€œYaį¹ kho no, āvuso, bhagavā saį¹…khittena uddesaį¹ uddisitvā vitthārena atthaį¹ avibhajitvā uį¹­į¹­hāyāsanā vihāraį¹ paviį¹­į¹­ho: ā€œReverends, the Buddha gave this brief summary recital, then entered his dwelling without explaining the meaning in detail:

ā€˜adhammo ca, bhikkhave, veditabbo ā€¦peā€¦ ā€˜You should know bad principles and good principles ā€¦

tathā paį¹­ipajjitabbanā€™ti. and practice accordingly.ā€™

Katamo cāvuso, adhammo; katamo ca dhammo? So what are bad principles? What are good principles?

Katamo ca anattho, katamo ca attho? What are bad results? And what are good results?

Pāį¹‡Ätipāto, āvuso, adhammo; Killing living creatures is a bad principle.

pāį¹‡Ätipātā veramaį¹‡Ä« dhammo; Not killing living creatures is a good principle.

ye ca pāį¹‡Ätipātapaccayā aneke pāpakā akusalā dhammā sambhavanti, ayaį¹ anattho; And the many bad, unskillful qualities produced by killing living creatures are bad results.

pāį¹‡Ätipātā veramaį¹‡ipaccayā ca aneke kusalā dhammā bhāvanāpāripÅ«riį¹ gacchanti, ayaį¹ attho. And the many skillful qualities fully developed because of not killing living creatures are good results.

Adinnādānaį¹, āvuso, adhammo; Stealing is a bad principle.

adinnādānā veramaį¹‡Ä« dhammo; Not stealing is a good principle.

ye ca adinnādānapaccayā aneke pāpakā akusalā dhammā sambhavanti, ayaį¹ anattho; And the many bad, unskillful qualities produced by stealing are bad results.

adinnādānā veramaį¹‡ipaccayā ca aneke kusalā dhammā bhāvanāpāripÅ«riį¹ gacchanti, ayaį¹ attho. And the many skillful qualities fully developed because of not stealing are good results.

Kāmesumicchācāro, āvuso, adhammo; Sexual misconduct is a bad principle.

kāmesumicchācārā veramaį¹‡Ä« dhammo; Avoiding sexual misconduct is a good principle.

ye ca kāmesumicchācārapaccayā aneke pāpakā akusalā dhammā sambhavanti, ayaį¹ anattho; And the many bad, unskillful qualities produced by sexual misconduct are bad results.

kāmesumicchācārā veramaį¹‡ipaccayā ca aneke kusalā dhammā bhāvanāpāripÅ«riį¹ gacchanti, ayaį¹ attho. And the many skillful qualities fully developed because of avoiding sexual misconduct are good results.

Musāvādo, āvuso, adhammo; Lying is a bad principle.

musāvādā veramaį¹‡Ä« dhammo; Not lying is a good principle.

ye ca musāvādapaccayā aneke pāpakā akusalā dhammā sambhavanti, ayaį¹ anattho; And the many bad, unskillful qualities produced by lying are bad results.

musāvādā veramaį¹‡ipaccayā ca aneke kusalā dhammā bhāvanāpāripÅ«riį¹ gacchanti, ayaį¹ attho. And the many skillful qualities fully developed because of not lying are good results.

Pisuį¹‡Ä vācā, āvuso, adhammo; Divisive speech is a bad principle.

pisuį¹‡Äya vācāya veramaį¹‡Ä« dhammo; Avoiding divisive speech is a good principle.

ye ca pisuį¹‡Ävācāpaccayā aneke pāpakā akusalā dhammā sambhavanti, ayaį¹ anattho; And the many bad, unskillful qualities produced by divisive speech are bad results.

pisuį¹‡Äya vācāya veramaį¹‡ipaccayā ca aneke kusalā dhammā bhāvanāpāripÅ«riį¹ gacchanti, ayaį¹ attho. And the many skillful qualities fully developed because of avoiding divisive speech are good results.

Pharusā vācā, āvuso, adhammo; Harsh speech is a bad principle.

pharusāya vācāya veramaį¹‡Ä« dhammo; Avoiding harsh speech is a good principle.

ye ca pharusāvācāpaccayā aneke pāpakā akusalā dhammā sambhavanti, ayaį¹ anattho; And the many bad, unskillful qualities produced by harsh speech are bad results.

pharusāya vācāya veramaį¹‡ipaccayā ca aneke kusalā dhammā bhāvanāpāripÅ«riį¹ gacchanti, ayaį¹ attho. And the many skillful qualities fully developed because of avoiding harsh speech are good results.

Samphappalāpo, āvuso, adhammo; Talking nonsense is a bad principle.

samphappalāpā veramaį¹‡Ä« dhammo; Avoiding talking nonsense is a good principle.

ye ca samphappalāpapaccayā aneke pāpakā akusalā dhammā sambhavanti, ayaį¹ anattho; And the many bad, unskillful qualities produced by talking nonsense are bad results.

samphappalāpā veramaį¹‡ipaccayā ca aneke kusalā dhammā bhāvanāpāripÅ«riį¹ gacchanti, ayaį¹ attho. And the many skillful qualities fully developed because of avoiding talking nonsense are good results.

Abhijjhā, āvuso, adhammo; Covetousness is a bad principle.

anabhijjhā dhammo; Contentment is a good principle.

ye ca abhijjhāpaccayā aneke pāpakā akusalā dhammā sambhavanti, ayaį¹ anattho; And the many bad, unskillful qualities produced by covetousness are bad results.

anabhijjhāpaccayā ca aneke kusalā dhammā bhāvanāpāripÅ«riį¹ gacchanti, ayaį¹ attho. And the many skillful qualities fully developed because of contentment are good results.

Byāpādo, āvuso, adhammo; Ill will is a bad principle.

abyāpādo dhammo; Good will is a good principle.

ye ca byāpādapaccayā aneke pāpakā akusalā dhammā sambhavanti, ayaį¹ anattho; And the many bad, unskillful qualities produced by ill will are bad results.

abyāpādapaccayā ca aneke kusalā dhammā bhāvanāpāripÅ«riį¹ gacchanti, ayaį¹ attho. And the many skillful qualities fully developed because of good will are good results.

Micchādiį¹­į¹­hi, āvuso, adhammo; Wrong view is a bad principle.

sammādiį¹­į¹­hi dhammo; Right view is a good principle.

ye ca micchādiį¹­į¹­hipaccayā aneke pāpakā akusalā dhammā sambhavanti, ayaį¹ anattho; And the many bad, unskillful qualities produced by wrong view are bad results.

sammādiį¹­į¹­hipaccayā ca aneke kusalā dhammā bhāvanāpāripÅ«riį¹ gacchanti, ayaį¹ attho. And the many skillful qualities fully developed because of right view are good results.

ā€˜Yaį¹ kho no, āvuso, bhagavā saį¹…khittena uddesaį¹ uddisitvā vitthārena atthaį¹ avibhajitvā uį¹­į¹­hāyāsanā vihāraį¹ paviį¹­į¹­hoā€”The Buddha gave this brief summary recital, then entered his dwelling without explaining the meaning in detail:

adhammo ca, bhikkhave, veditabbo ā€¦peā€¦ ā€˜You should know bad principles and good principles ā€¦

tathā paį¹­ipajjitabbanā€™ti. and practice accordingly.ā€™

Imassa kho ahaį¹, āvuso, bhagavatā saį¹…khittena uddesassa uddiį¹­į¹­hassa vitthārena atthaį¹ avibhattassa evaį¹ vitthārena atthaį¹ ājānāmi. And this is how I understand the detailed meaning of this summary recital.

Ākaį¹…khamānā ca pana tumhe, āvuso, bhagavantaį¹yeva upasaį¹…kamitvā etamatthaį¹ paį¹­ipuccheyyātha. If you wish, you may go to the Buddha and ask him about this.

Yathā no bhagavā byākaroti tathā naį¹ dhāreyyāthāā€ti. You should remember it in line with the Buddhaā€™s answer.ā€

ā€œEvamāvusoā€ti kho te bhikkhÅ« āyasmato mahākaccānassa bhāsitaį¹ abhinanditvā anumoditvā uį¹­į¹­hāyāsanā yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kamiį¹su; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavantaį¹ abhivādetvā ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«diį¹su. Ekamantaį¹ nisinnā kho te bhikkhÅ« bhagavantaį¹ etadavocuį¹: ā€œYes, reverend,ā€ said those mendicants, approving and agreeing with what Mahākaccāna said. Then they rose from their seats and went to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and told him what had happened. Then they said:

ā€œYaį¹ kho no, bhante, bhagavā saį¹…khittena uddesaį¹ uddisitvā vitthārena atthaį¹ avibhajitvā uį¹­į¹­hāyāsanā vihāraį¹ paviį¹­į¹­ho:

ā€˜adhammo ca, bhikkhave, veditabbo ā€¦peā€¦

tathā paį¹­ipajjitabbanā€™ti.

Yathā no āyasmā mahākaccāno byākarissati tathā naį¹ dhāressāmāā€™ti.

Atha kho mayaį¹, bhante, yenāyasmā mahākaccāno tenupasaį¹…kamimhā; upasaį¹…kamitvā āyasmantaį¹ mahākaccānaį¹ etamatthaį¹ apucchimhā. ā€œSir, we went to Mahākaccāna and asked him about this matter.

Tesaį¹ no, bhante, āyasmatā mahākaccānena imehi akkharehi imehi padehi imehi byaƱjanehi attho suvibhattoā€ti. And Mahākaccāna clearly explained the meaning to us in this manner, with these words and phrases.ā€

ā€œSādhu sādhu, bhikkhave. ā€œGood, good, mendicants!

Paį¹‡įøito, bhikkhave, mahākaccāno. MahāpaƱƱo, bhikkhave, mahākaccāno. Mahākaccāna is astute, he has great wisdom.

MaƱcepi tumhe, bhikkhave, upasaį¹…kamitvā etamatthaį¹ paį¹­ipuccheyyātha, ahampi cetaį¹ evamevaį¹ byākareyyaį¹ yathā taį¹ mahākaccānena byākataį¹. If you came to me and asked this question, I would answer it in exactly the same way as Mahākaccāna.

Eso ceva tassa attho. EvaƱca naį¹ dhāreyyāthāā€ti. That is what it means, and thatā€™s how you should remember it.ā€
