Atha kho jāį¹‡ussoį¹‡i brāhmaį¹‡o yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavatā saddhiį¹ sammodi. Then the brahmin Jānussoį¹‡i went up to the Buddha, and exchanged greetings with him.

SammodanÄ«yaį¹ kathaį¹ sāraį¹‡Ä«yaį¹ vÄ«tisāretvā ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho jāį¹‡ussoį¹‡i brāhmaį¹‡o bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side and said to the Buddha,

ā€œMayamassu, bho gotama, brāhmaį¹‡Ä nāma. ā€œWe who are known as brahmins

Dānāni dema, saddhāni karoma: give gifts and perform memorial rites for the dead:

ā€˜idaį¹ dānaį¹ petānaį¹ Ʊātisālohitānaį¹ upakappatu, idaį¹ dānaį¹ petā Ʊātisālohitā paribhuƱjantÅ«ā€™ti. ā€˜May this gift aid my departed relatives and kin. May they partake of this gift.ā€™

Kacci taį¹, bho gotama, dānaį¹ petānaį¹ Ʊātisālohitānaį¹ upakappati; But does this gift really aid departed relatives and kin?

kacci te petā Ʊātisālohitā taį¹ dānaį¹ paribhuƱjantÄ«ā€ti? Do they actually partake of it?ā€

ā€œį¹¬hāne kho, brāhmaį¹‡a, upakappati, no aį¹į¹hāneā€ti. ā€œIt aids them if the conditions are right, brahmin, but not if the conditions are wrong.ā€

ā€œKatamaį¹ pana, bho gotama, į¹hānaį¹, katamaį¹ aį¹į¹hānanā€ti? ā€œThen, worthy Gotama, what are the right and wrong conditions?ā€

ā€œIdha, brāhmaį¹‡a, ekacco pāį¹‡ÄtipātÄ« hoti, adinnādāyÄ« hoti, kāmesumicchācārÄ« hoti, musāvādÄ« hoti, pisuį¹‡avāco hoti, pharusavāco hoti, samphappalāpÄ« hoti, abhijjhālu hoti, byāpannacitto hoti, micchādiį¹į¹hiko hoti. ā€œBrahmin, take someone who kills living creatures, steals, and commits sexual misconduct. They use speech thatā€™s false, divisive, harsh, or nonsensical. And theyā€™re covetous, malicious, with wrong view.

So kāyassa bhedā paraį¹ maraį¹‡Ä nirayaį¹ upapajjati. When their body breaks up, after death, theyā€™re reborn in hell.

Yo nerayikānaį¹ sattānaį¹ āhāro, tena so tattha yāpeti, tena so tattha tiį¹į¹hati. There they survive feeding on the food of the hell beings.

Idampi kho, brāhmaį¹‡a, aį¹į¹hānaį¹ yattha į¹hitassa taį¹ dānaį¹ na upakappati. The conditions there are wrong, so the gift does not aid the one who lives there.

Idha pana, brāhmaį¹‡a, ekacco pāį¹‡ÄtipātÄ« ā€¦peā€¦ micchādiį¹į¹hiko hoti. Take someone else who kills living creatures ā€¦ and has wrong view.

Yo tiracchānayonikānaį¹ sattānaį¹ āhāro, tena so tattha yāpeti, tena so tattha tiį¹į¹hati. There they survive feeding on the food of the beings in the animal realm.

Idampi kho, brāhmaį¹‡a, aį¹į¹hānaį¹ yattha į¹hitassa taį¹ dānaį¹ na upakappati. The conditions there too are wrong, so the gift does not aid the one who lives there.

Idha pana, brāhmaį¹‡a, ekacco pāį¹‡Ätipātā paį¹ivirato hoti, adinnādānā paį¹ivirato hoti, kāmesumicchācārā paį¹ivirato hoti, musāvādā paį¹ivirato hoti, pisuį¹‡Äya vācāya paį¹ivirato hoti, pharusāya vācāya paį¹ivirato hoti, samphappalāpā paį¹ivirato hoti, anabhijjhālu hoti, abyāpannacitto hoti, sammādiį¹į¹hiko hoti. Take someone else who doesnā€™t kill living creatures, steal, commit sexual misconduct, or use speech thatā€™s false, divisive, harsh, or nonsensical. Theyā€™re contented, kind-hearted, and have right view.

So kāyassa bhedā paraį¹ maraį¹‡Ä manussānaį¹ sahabyataį¹ upapajjati. When their body breaks up, after death, theyā€™re reborn in the human realm.

Yo manussānaį¹ āhāro, tena so tattha yāpeti, tena so tattha tiį¹į¹hati. There they survive feeding on human food.

Idampi kho, brāhmaį¹‡a, aį¹į¹hānaį¹ yattha į¹hitassa taį¹ dānaį¹ na upakappati. The conditions there too are wrong, so the gift does not aid the one who lives there.

So kāyassa bhedā paraį¹ maraį¹‡Ä devānaį¹ sahabyataį¹ upapajjati. When their body breaks up, after death, theyā€™re reborn in the company of the gods.

Yo devānaį¹ āhāro, tena so tattha yāpeti, tena so tattha tiį¹į¹hati. There they survive feeding on the food of the gods.

Idampi, brāhmaį¹‡a, aį¹į¹hānaį¹ yattha į¹hitassa taį¹ dānaį¹ upakappati. The conditions there too are wrong, so the gift does not aid the one who lives there.

Idha pana, brāhmaį¹‡a, ekacco pāį¹‡ÄtipātÄ« hoti ā€¦peā€¦ micchādiį¹į¹hiko hoti. Take someone else who kills living creatures ā€¦ and has wrong view.

There they survive feeding on the food of the beings in the ghost realm. Or else they survive feeding on what friends and colleagues, relatives and kin provide them with from here.

Idaį¹ kho, brāhmaį¹‡a, į¹hānaį¹ yattha į¹hitassa taį¹ dānaį¹ upakappatÄ«ā€ti. The conditions there are right, so the gift aids the one who lives there.ā€
