SammodanÄ«yaį¹ kathaį¹ sÄraį¹Ä«yaį¹ vÄ«tisÄretvÄ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho jÄį¹ussoį¹i brÄhmaį¹o bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side and said to the Buddha,
āMayamassu, bho gotama, brÄhmaį¹Ä nÄma. āWe who are known as brahmins
DÄnÄni dema, saddhÄni karoma: give gifts and perform memorial rites for the dead:
āidaį¹ dÄnaį¹ petÄnaį¹ ƱÄtisÄlohitÄnaį¹ upakappatu, idaį¹ dÄnaį¹ petÄ Ć±ÄtisÄlohitÄ paribhuƱjantÅ«āti. āMay this gift aid my departed relatives and kin. May they partake of this gift.ā
Kacci taį¹, bho gotama, dÄnaį¹ petÄnaį¹ ƱÄtisÄlohitÄnaį¹ upakappati; But does this gift really aid departed relatives and kin?
kacci te petÄ Ć±ÄtisÄlohitÄ taį¹ dÄnaį¹ paribhuƱjantÄ«āti? Do they actually partake of it?ā
āį¹¬hÄne kho, brÄhmaį¹a, upakappati, no aį¹į¹hÄneāti. āIt aids them if the conditions are right, brahmin, but not if the conditions are wrong.ā
āKatamaį¹ pana, bho gotama, į¹hÄnaį¹, katamaį¹ aį¹į¹hÄnanāti? āThen, worthy Gotama, what are the right and wrong conditions?ā
āIdha, brÄhmaį¹a, ekacco pÄį¹ÄtipÄtÄ« hoti, adinnÄdÄyÄ« hoti, kÄmesumicchÄcÄrÄ« hoti, musÄvÄdÄ« hoti, pisuį¹avÄco hoti, pharusavÄco hoti, samphappalÄpÄ« hoti, abhijjhÄlu hoti, byÄpannacitto hoti, micchÄdiį¹į¹hiko hoti. āBrahmin, take someone who kills living creatures, steals, and commits sexual misconduct. They use speech thatās false, divisive, harsh, or nonsensical. And theyāre covetous, malicious, with wrong view.
So kÄyassa bhedÄ paraį¹ maraį¹Ä nirayaį¹ upapajjati. When their body breaks up, after death, theyāre reborn in hell.
Yo nerayikÄnaį¹ sattÄnaį¹ ÄhÄro, tena so tattha yÄpeti, tena so tattha tiį¹į¹hati. There they survive feeding on the food of the hell beings.
Idampi kho, brÄhmaį¹a, aį¹į¹hÄnaį¹ yattha į¹hitassa taį¹ dÄnaį¹ na upakappati. The conditions there are wrong, so the gift does not aid the one who lives there.

āAƱƱepissa, brÄhmaį¹a, petÄ Ć±ÄtisÄlohitÄ taį¹ į¹hÄnaį¹ upapannÄ honti, te taį¹ dÄnaį¹ paribhuƱjantÄ«āti. āOther departed relatives reborn there will partake of that gift.ā
āSace pana, bho gotama, so ceva peto ƱÄtisÄlohito taį¹ į¹hÄnaį¹ anupapanno hoti aƱƱepissa ƱÄtisÄlohitÄ petÄ taį¹ į¹hÄnaį¹ anupapannÄ honti, ko taį¹ dÄnaį¹ paribhuƱjatÄ«āti? āBut who partakes of the gift when neither that relative nor other relatives have been reborn in that place?ā
āAį¹į¹hÄnaį¹ kho etaį¹, brÄhmaį¹a, anavakÄso yaį¹ taį¹ į¹hÄnaį¹ vivittaį¹ assa iminÄ dÄ«ghena addhunÄ yadidaį¹ petehi ƱÄtisÄlohitehi. āItās impossible, brahmin, it cannot happen that that place is vacant of departed relatives in all this long time.
Api ca, brÄhmaį¹a, dÄyakopi anipphaloāti. Itās never fruitless for the donor.ā
