KarajakÄyasutta The Body Born of Deeds
āNÄhaį¹, bhikkhave, saƱcetanikÄnaį¹ kammÄnaį¹ katÄnaį¹ upacitÄnaį¹ appaį¹isaį¹veditvÄ byantÄ«bhÄvaį¹ vadÄmi, āMendicants, I donāt say that intentional deeds that have been performed and accumulated are eliminated without being experienced.
taƱca kho diį¹į¹heva dhamme upapajje vÄ apare vÄ pariyÄye. And that may be in this very life, or in the next life, or in some subsequent period.
Na tvevÄhaį¹, bhikkhave, saƱcetanikÄnaį¹ kammÄnaį¹ katÄnaį¹ upacitÄnaį¹ appaį¹isaį¹veditvÄ dukkhassantakiriyaį¹ vadÄmi. And I donāt say that suffering is ended without experiencing intentional deeds that have been performed and accumulated.
Sa kho so, bhikkhave, ariyasÄvako evaį¹ vigatÄbhijjho vigatabyÄpÄdo asammÅ«įø·ho sampajÄno paį¹issato mettÄsahagatena cetasÄ ekaį¹ disaį¹ pharitvÄ viharati tathÄ dutiyaį¹ tathÄ tatiyaį¹ tathÄ catutthaį¹. Iti uddhamadho tiriyaį¹ sabbadhi sabbattatÄya sabbÄvantaį¹ lokaį¹ mettÄsahagatena cetasÄ vipulena mahaggatena appamÄį¹ena averena abyÄpajjena pharitvÄ viharati. That noble disciple is rid of desire, rid of ill will, unconfused, aware, and mindful. They meditate spreading a heart full of love to one direction, and to the second, and to the third, and to the fourth. In the same way above, below, across, everywhere, all around, they spread a heart full of love to the whole worldāabundant, expansive, limitless, free of enmity and ill will.
So evaį¹ pajÄnÄti: They understand:
āpubbe kho me idaį¹ cittaį¹ parittaį¹ ahosi abhÄvitaį¹, etarahi pana me idaį¹ cittaį¹ appamÄį¹aį¹ subhÄvitaį¹. Yaį¹ kho pana kiƱci pamÄį¹akataį¹ kammaį¹, na taį¹ tatrÄvasissati na taį¹ tatrÄvatiį¹į¹hatÄ«āti. āFormerly my mind was limited and undeveloped. Now itās limitless and well developed. Whatever limited deeds Iāve done donāt remain or persist there.ā
Taį¹ kiį¹ maƱƱatha, bhikkhave, What do you think, mendicants?
daharatagge ce so ayaį¹ kumÄro mettaį¹ cetovimuttiį¹ bhÄveyya, api nu kho pÄpakammaį¹ kareyyÄāti? Suppose a child had developed the heartās release by love from their childhood on. Would they still do any bad deed?ā
āNo hetaį¹, bhanteā. āNo, sir.ā
āAkarontaį¹ kho pana pÄpakammaį¹ api nu kho dukkhaį¹ phuseyyÄāti? āNot doing any bad deed, would they still experience any suffering?ā
āNo hetaį¹, bhante. āNo, sir.
AkarontaƱhi, bhante, pÄpakammaį¹ kuto dukkhaį¹ phusissatÄ«āti. For if they donāt do any bad deed, from where would suffering afflict them?ā
āBhÄvetabbÄ kho panÄyaį¹, bhikkhave, mettÄcetovimutti itthiyÄ vÄ purisena vÄ. āThis heartās release by love should be developed by women or men.
ItthiyÄ vÄ, bhikkhave, purisassa vÄ nÄyaį¹ kÄyo ÄdÄya gamanÄ«yo. For neither women nor men take this body with them when they go.
Cittantaro ayaį¹, bhikkhave, macco. The mind is whatās inside mortal beings.
So evaį¹ pajÄnÄti: They understand:
āyaį¹ kho me idaį¹ kiƱci pubbe iminÄ karajakÄyena pÄpakammaį¹ kataį¹, sabbaį¹ taį¹ idha vedanÄ«yaį¹; āWhatever bad deeds I have done in the past with this deed-born body I will experience here.
na taį¹ anugaį¹ bhavissatÄ«āti. It will not follow me to my next life.ā
Evaį¹ bhÄvitÄ kho, bhikkhave, mettÄ cetovimutti anÄgÄmitÄya saį¹vattati, idha paƱƱassa bhikkhuno uttari vimuttiį¹ appaį¹ivijjhato. The heartās release by love developed in this way leads to non-return for a wise mendicant here who has not penetrated to a higher freedom.
Karuį¹Äsahagatena cetasÄ ā¦ They meditate spreading a heart full of compassion ā¦
muditÄsahagatena cetasÄ ā¦ They meditate spreading a heart full of rejoicing ā¦
upekkhÄsahagatena cetasÄ ekaį¹ disaį¹ pharitvÄ viharati tathÄ dutiyaį¹ tathÄ tatiyaį¹ tathÄ catutthaį¹. They meditate spreading a heart full of equanimity to one direction, and to the second, and to the third, and to the fourth.
Iti uddhamadho tiriyaį¹ sabbadhi sabbattatÄya sabbÄvantaį¹ lokaį¹ upekkhÄsahagatena cetasÄ vipulena mahaggatena appamÄį¹ena averena abyÄpajjena pharitvÄ viharati.
