Karajakāyasutta The Body Born of Deeds

ā€œNāhaį¹, bhikkhave, saƱcetanikānaį¹ kammānaį¹ katānaį¹ upacitānaį¹ appaį¹­isaį¹veditvā byantÄ«bhāvaį¹ vadāmi, ā€œMendicants, I donā€™t say that intentional deeds that have been performed and accumulated are eliminated without being experienced.

taƱca kho diį¹­į¹­heva dhamme upapajje vā apare vā pariyāye. And that may be in this very life, or in the next life, or in some subsequent period.

Na tvevāhaį¹, bhikkhave, saƱcetanikānaį¹ kammānaį¹ katānaį¹ upacitānaį¹ appaį¹­isaį¹veditvā dukkhassantakiriyaį¹ vadāmi. And I donā€™t say that suffering is ended without experiencing intentional deeds that have been performed and accumulated.

Sa kho so, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako evaį¹ vigatābhijjho vigatabyāpādo asammÅ«įø·ho sampajāno paį¹­issato mettāsahagatena cetasā ekaį¹ disaį¹ pharitvā viharati tathā dutiyaį¹ tathā tatiyaį¹ tathā catutthaį¹. Iti uddhamadho tiriyaį¹ sabbadhi sabbattatāya sabbāvantaį¹ lokaį¹ mettāsahagatena cetasā vipulena mahaggatena appamāį¹‡ena averena abyāpajjena pharitvā viharati. That noble disciple is rid of desire, rid of ill will, unconfused, aware, and mindful. They meditate spreading a heart full of love to one direction, and to the second, and to the third, and to the fourth. In the same way above, below, across, everywhere, all around, they spread a heart full of love to the whole worldā€”abundant, expansive, limitless, free of enmity and ill will.

So evaį¹ pajānāti: They understand:

ā€˜pubbe kho me idaį¹ cittaį¹ parittaį¹ ahosi abhāvitaį¹, etarahi pana me idaį¹ cittaį¹ appamāį¹‡aį¹ subhāvitaį¹. Yaį¹ kho pana kiƱci pamāį¹‡akataį¹ kammaį¹, na taį¹ tatrāvasissati na taį¹ tatrāvatiį¹­į¹­hatÄ«ā€™ti. ā€˜Formerly my mind was limited and undeveloped. Now itā€™s limitless and well developed. Whatever limited deeds Iā€™ve done donā€™t remain or persist there.ā€™

Taį¹ kiį¹ maƱƱatha, bhikkhave, What do you think, mendicants?

daharatagge ce so ayaį¹ kumāro mettaį¹ cetovimuttiį¹ bhāveyya, api nu kho pāpakammaį¹ kareyyāā€ti? Suppose a child had developed the heartā€™s release by love from their childhood on. Would they still do any bad deed?ā€

ā€œNo hetaį¹, bhanteā€. ā€œNo, sir.ā€

ā€œAkarontaį¹ kho pana pāpakammaį¹ api nu kho dukkhaį¹ phuseyyāā€ti? ā€œNot doing any bad deed, would they still experience any suffering?ā€

ā€œNo hetaį¹, bhante. ā€œNo, sir.

AkarontaƱhi, bhante, pāpakammaį¹ kuto dukkhaį¹ phusissatÄ«ā€ti. For if they donā€™t do any bad deed, from where would suffering afflict them?ā€

ā€œBhāvetabbā kho panāyaį¹, bhikkhave, mettācetovimutti itthiyā vā purisena vā. ā€œThis heartā€™s release by love should be developed by women or men.

Itthiyā vā, bhikkhave, purisassa vā nāyaį¹ kāyo ādāya gamanÄ«yo. For neither women nor men take this body with them when they go.

Cittantaro ayaį¹, bhikkhave, macco. The mind is whatā€™s inside mortal beings.

So evaį¹ pajānāti: They understand:

ā€˜yaį¹ kho me idaį¹ kiƱci pubbe iminā karajakāyena pāpakammaį¹ kataį¹, sabbaį¹ taį¹ idha vedanÄ«yaį¹; ā€˜Whatever bad deeds I have done in the past with this deed-born body I will experience here.

na taį¹ anugaį¹ bhavissatÄ«ā€™ti. It will not follow me to my next life.ā€™

Evaį¹ bhāvitā kho, bhikkhave, mettā cetovimutti anāgāmitāya saį¹vattati, idha paƱƱassa bhikkhuno uttari vimuttiį¹ appaį¹­ivijjhato. The heartā€™s release by love developed in this way leads to non-return for a wise mendicant here who has not penetrated to a higher freedom.

Karuį¹‡Äsahagatena cetasā ā€¦ They meditate spreading a heart full of compassion ā€¦

muditāsahagatena cetasā ā€¦ They meditate spreading a heart full of rejoicing ā€¦

upekkhāsahagatena cetasā ekaį¹ disaį¹ pharitvā viharati tathā dutiyaį¹ tathā tatiyaį¹ tathā catutthaį¹. They meditate spreading a heart full of equanimity to one direction, and to the second, and to the third, and to the fourth.

Iti uddhamadho tiriyaį¹ sabbadhi sabbattatāya sabbāvantaį¹ lokaį¹ upekkhāsahagatena cetasā vipulena mahaggatena appamāį¹‡ena averena abyāpajjena pharitvā viharati. In the same way above, below, across, everywhere, all around, they spread a heart full of equanimity to the whole worldā€”abundant, expansive, limitless, free of enmity and ill will.

So evaį¹ pajānāti: They understand:
