Adhammacariyāsutta Unprincipled Conduct

Atha kho aƱƱataro brāhmaį¹‡o yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavatā saddhiį¹ sammodi. Then a certain brahmin went up to the Buddha and exchanged greetings with him.

SammodanÄ«yaį¹ kathaį¹ sāraį¹‡Ä«yaį¹ vÄ«tisāretvā ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho so brāhmaį¹‡o bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side and said to the Buddha:

ā€œko nu kho, bho gotama, hetu ko paccayo yena mā€™idhekacce sattā kāyassa bhedā paraį¹ maraį¹‡Ä apāyaį¹ duggatiį¹ vinipātaį¹ nirayaį¹ upapajjantÄ«ā€ti? ā€œWhat is the cause, worthy Gotama, what is the reason why some sentient beings, when their body breaks up, after death, are reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell?ā€

ā€œAdhammacariyāvisamacariyāhetu kho, brāhmaį¹‡a, evamā€™idhekacce sattā kāyassa bhedā paraį¹ maraį¹‡Ä apāyaį¹ duggatiį¹ vinipātaį¹ nirayaį¹ upapajjantÄ«ā€ti. ā€œUnprincipled and immoral conduct is the reason why some sentient beings, when their body breaks up, after death, are reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell.ā€

ā€œKo pana, bho gotama, hetu ko paccayo yena mā€™idhekacce sattā kāyassa bhedā paraį¹ maraį¹‡Ä sugatiį¹ saggaį¹ lokaį¹ upapajjantÄ«ā€ti? ā€œBut what is the cause, worthy Gotama, what is the reason why some sentient beings, when their body breaks up, after death, are reborn in a good place, a heavenly realm?ā€

ā€œDhammacariyāsamacariyāhetu kho, brāhmaį¹‡a, evamā€™idhekacce sattā kāyassa bhedā paraį¹ maraį¹‡Ä sugatiį¹ saggaį¹ lokaį¹ upapajjantÄ«ā€ti. ā€œPrincipled and moral conduct is the reason why some sentient beings, when their body breaks up, after death, are reborn in a good place, a heavenly realm.ā€

ā€œNa kho ahaį¹ imassa bhoto gotamassa saį¹…khittena bhāsitassa vitthārena atthaį¹ ājānāmi. ā€œI donā€™t understand the detailed meaning of what the worthy Gotama has said in brief.

Sādhu me bhavaį¹ gotamo tathā dhammaį¹ desetu yathāhaį¹ imassa bhoto gotamassa saį¹…khittena bhāsitassa vitthārena atthaį¹ ājāneyyanā€ti. Please, worthy Gotama, teach me this matter so I can understand the detailed meaning.ā€

ā€œTena hi, brāhmaį¹‡a, suį¹‡Ähi, sādhukaį¹ manasi karohi; bhāsissāmÄ«ā€ti. ā€œWell then, brahmin, listen and apply your mind well, I will speak.ā€

ā€œEvaį¹, bhoā€ti kho so brāhmaį¹‡o bhagavato paccassosi. ā€œYes, worthy sir,ā€ the brahmin replied.

Bhagavā etadavoca: The Buddha said this:

ā€œTividhā kho, brāhmaį¹‡a, kāyena adhammacariyāvisamacariyā hoti; ā€œBrahmin, unprincipled and immoral conduct is threefold by way of body,

catubbidhā vācāya adhammacariyāvisamacariyā hoti; fourfold by way of speech,

tividhā manasā adhammacariyāvisamacariyā hoti. and threefold by way of mind.

upāsakaį¹ maį¹ bhavaį¹ gotamo dhāretu ajjatagge pāį¹‡upetaį¹ saraį¹‡aį¹ gatanā€ti. From this day forth, may the worthy Gotama remember me as a lay follower who has gone for refuge for life.ā€
