CetanÄkaraį¹Ä«yasutta Making a Wish
āSÄ«lavato, bhikkhave, sÄ«lasampannassa na cetanÄya karaį¹Ä«yaį¹: āMendicants, an ethical person, who has fulfilled ethical conduct, need not make a wish:
āavippaį¹isÄro me uppajjatÅ«āti. āMay I have no regrets!ā
DhammatÄ esÄ, bhikkhave, yaį¹ sÄ«lavato sÄ«lasampannassa avippaį¹isÄro uppajjati. Itās only natural that an ethical person has no regrets.
Avippaį¹isÄrissa, bhikkhave, na cetanÄya karaį¹Ä«yaį¹: When you have no regrets you need not make a wish:
āpÄmojjaį¹ me uppajjatÅ«āti. āMay I feel joy!ā
DhammatÄ esÄ, bhikkhave, yaį¹ avippaį¹isÄrissa pÄmojjaį¹ uppajjati. Itās only natural that joy springs up when you have no regrets.
Pamuditassa, bhikkhave, na cetanÄya karaį¹Ä«yaį¹: When you feel joy you need not make a wish:
āpÄ«ti me uppajjatÅ«āti. āMay I experience rapture!ā
DhammatÄ esÄ, bhikkhave, yaį¹ pamuditassa pÄ«ti uppajjati. Itās only natural that rapture arises when youāre joyful.
PÄ«timanassa, bhikkhave, na cetanÄya karaį¹Ä«yaį¹: When your mind is full of rapture you need not make a wish:
ākÄyo me passambhatÅ«āti. āMay my body become tranquil!ā
DhammatÄ esÄ, bhikkhave, yaį¹ pÄ«timanassa kÄyo passambhati. Itās only natural that your body becomes tranquil when your mind is full of rapture.
PassaddhakÄyassa, bhikkhave, na cetanÄya karaį¹Ä«yaį¹: When your body is tranquil you need not make a wish:
āsukhaį¹ vediyÄmÄ«āti. āMay I feel bliss!ā
DhammatÄ esÄ, bhikkhave, yaį¹ passaddhakÄyo sukhaį¹ vediyati. Itās only natural to feel bliss when your body is tranquil.
Sukhino, bhikkhave, na cetanÄya karaį¹Ä«yaį¹: When you feel bliss you need not make a wish:
ācittaį¹ me samÄdhiyatÅ«āti. āMay my mind be immersed in samÄdhi!ā
DhammatÄ esÄ, bhikkhave, yaį¹ sukhino cittaį¹ samÄdhiyati. Itās only natural for the mind to become immersed in samÄdhi when you feel bliss.
SamÄhitassa, bhikkhave, na cetanÄya karaį¹Ä«yaį¹: When your mind is immersed in samÄdhi you need not make a wish:
āyathÄbhÅ«taį¹ jÄnÄmi passÄmÄ«āti. āMay I truly know and see!ā
DhammatÄ esÄ, bhikkhave, yaį¹ samÄhito yathÄbhÅ«taį¹ jÄnÄti passati. Itās only natural to truly know and see when your mind is immersed in samÄdhi.
YathÄbhÅ«taį¹, bhikkhave, jÄnato passato na cetanÄya karaį¹Ä«yaį¹: When you truly know and see you need not make a wish:
ānibbindÄmÄ«āti. āMay I grow disillusioned!ā
DhammatÄ esÄ, bhikkhave, yaį¹ yathÄbhÅ«taį¹ jÄnaį¹ passaį¹ nibbindati. Itās only natural to grow disillusioned when you truly know and see.
Nibbinnassa, bhikkhave, na cetanÄya karaį¹Ä«yaį¹: When youāre disillusioned you need not make a wish:
āvirajjÄmÄ«āti. āMay I become dispassionate!ā
DhammatÄ esÄ, bhikkhave, yaį¹ nibbinno virajjati. Itās only natural to grow dispassionate when youāre disillusioned.
Virattassa, bhikkhave, na cetanÄya karaį¹Ä«yaį¹: When youāre dispassionate you need not make a wish:
āvimuttiƱÄį¹adassanaį¹ sacchikaromÄ«āti. āMay I realize the knowledge and vision of freedom!ā
DhammatÄ esÄ, bhikkhave, yaį¹ viratto vimuttiƱÄį¹adassanaį¹ sacchikaroti. Itās only natural to realize the knowledge and vision of freedom when youāre dispassionate.
Iti kho, bhikkhave, virÄgo vimuttiƱÄį¹adassanattho vimuttiƱÄį¹adassanÄnisaį¹so, nibbidÄ virÄgatthÄ virÄgÄnisaį¹sÄ, yathÄbhÅ«taƱÄį¹adassanaį¹ nibbidatthaį¹ nibbidÄnisaį¹saį¹, samÄdhi yathÄbhÅ«taƱÄį¹adassanattho yathÄbhÅ«taƱÄį¹adassanÄnisaį¹so, sukhaį¹ samÄdhatthaį¹ samÄdhÄnisaį¹saį¹, passaddhi sukhatthÄ sukhÄnisaį¹sÄ, pÄ«ti passaddhatthÄ passaddhÄnisaį¹sÄ, pÄmojjaį¹ pÄ«tatthaį¹ pÄ«tÄnisaį¹saį¹, avippaį¹isÄro pÄmojjattho pÄmojjÄnisaį¹so, kusalÄni sÄ«lÄni avippaį¹isÄratthÄni avippaį¹isÄrÄnisaį¹sÄni. And so, mendicants, the knowledge and vision of freedom is the purpose and benefit of dispassion. Dispassion is the purpose and benefit of disillusionment. Disillusionment is the purpose and benefit of truly knowing and seeing. Truly knowing and seeing is the purpose and benefit of immersion. Immersion is the purpose and benefit of bliss. Bliss is the purpose and benefit of tranquility. Tranquility is the purpose and benefit of rapture. Rapture is the purpose and benefit of joy. Joy is the purpose and benefit of not having regrets. Not having regrets is the purpose and benefit of skillful ethics.
Iti kho, bhikkhave, dhammÄ dhamme abhisandenti, dhammÄ dhamme paripÅ«renti apÄrÄ pÄraį¹ gamanÄyÄāti. And so, mendicants, good qualities flow on and fill up from one to the other, for going from the near shore to the far shore.ā
