kamitvÄ bhagavantaį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho ÄyasmÄ Änando bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: Then Venerable Änanda went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him:
āSiyÄ nu kho, bhante, bhikkhuno tathÄrÅ«po samÄdhipaį¹ilÄbho yathÄ na cakkhuį¹ manasi kareyya, na rÅ«paį¹ manasi kareyya, na sotaį¹ manasi kareyya, na saddaį¹ manasi kareyya, na ghÄnaį¹ manasi kareyya, na gandhaį¹ manasi kareyya, na jivhaį¹ manasi kareyya, na rasaį¹ manasi kareyya, na kÄyaį¹ manasi kareyya, na phoį¹į¹habbaį¹ manasi kareyya, na pathaviį¹ manasi kareyya, na Äpaį¹ manasi kareyya, na tejaį¹ manasi kareyya, na vÄyaį¹ manasi kareyya, na ÄkÄsÄnaƱcÄyatanaį¹ manasi kareyya, na viƱƱÄį¹aƱcÄyatanaį¹ manasi kareyya, na ÄkiƱcaƱƱÄyatanaį¹ manasi kareyya, na nevasaƱƱÄnÄsaƱƱÄyatanaį¹ manasi kareyya, na idhalokaį¹ manasi kareyya, na paralokaį¹ manasi kareyya, yampidaį¹ diį¹į¹haį¹ sutaį¹ mutaį¹ viƱƱÄtaį¹ pattaį¹ pariyesitaį¹ anuvicaritaį¹ manasÄ, tampi na manasi kareyya; āCould it be, sir, that a mendicant might gain a state of immersion like this. They wouldnāt focus on the eye or sights, ear or sounds, nose or smells, tongue or tastes, or body or touches. They wouldnāt focus on earth in earth, water in water, fire in fire, or air in air. And they wouldnāt focus on the dimension of infinite space in the dimension of infinite space, the dimension of infinite consciousness in the dimension of infinite consciousness, the dimension of nothingness in the dimension of nothingness, or the dimension of neither perception nor non-perception in the dimension of neither perception nor non-perception. They wouldnāt focus on this world in this world, or the other world in the other world. And they wouldnāt focus on what is seen, heard, thought, known, attained, sought, or explored by the mind.
manasi ca pana kareyyÄāti? Yet they would focus?ā

yampidaį¹ diį¹į¹haį¹ sutaį¹ mutaį¹ viƱƱÄtaį¹ pattaį¹ pariyesitaį¹ anuvicaritaį¹ manasÄ, tampi na manasi kareyya;
manasi ca pana kareyyÄāti?
āIdhÄnanda, bhikkhu evaį¹ manasi karoti: āÄnanda, itās when a mendicant focuses thus:
āetaį¹ santaį¹ etaį¹ paį¹Ä«taį¹, yadidaį¹ sabbasaį¹
khÄrasamatho sabbÅ«padhipaį¹inissaggo taį¹hÄkkhayo virÄgo nirodho nibbÄnanāti. āThis is peaceful; this is sublimeāthat is, the stilling of all activities, the letting go of all attachments, the ending of craving, fading away, cessation, extinguishment.ā
