Ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavā rājagahe viharati moranivāpe paribbājakārāme. At one time the Buddha was staying near Rājagaha, at the monastery of the wanderers in the peacocksā€™ feeding ground.

Tatra kho bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi: There the Buddha addressed the mendicants,

ā€œbhikkhavoā€ti. ā€œMendicants!ā€

ā€œBhadanteā€ti te bhikkhÅ« bhagavato paccassosuį¹. ā€œVenerable sir,ā€ they replied.

Bhagavā etadavoca: The Buddha said this:

ā€œTÄ«hi, bhikkhave, dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu accantaniį¹į¹ho hoti accantayogakkhemÄ« accantabrahmacārÄ« accantapariyosāno seį¹į¹ho devamanussānaį¹. ā€œMendicants, a mendicant who has three qualities has reached the ultimate end, the ultimate sanctuary from the yoke, the ultimate spiritual life, the ultimate goal. They are best among gods and humans.

Katamehi tīhi? What three?

Asekhena sÄ«lakkhandhena, asekhena samādhikkhandhena, asekhena paƱƱākkhandhenaā€”The entire spectrum of an adeptā€™s ethics, immersion, and wisdom.

A mendicant with these three qualities has reached the ultimate end, the ultimate sanctuary from the yoke, the ultimate spiritual life, the ultimate goal. They are best among gods and humans.

Aparehipi, bhikkhave, tÄ«hi dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu accantaniį¹į¹ho hoti accantayogakkhemÄ« accantabrahmacārÄ« accantapariyosāno seį¹į¹ho devamanussānaį¹. A mendicant who has another three qualities has reached the ultimate end, the ultimate sanctuary from the yoke, the ultimate spiritual life, the ultimate goal. They are best among gods and humans.

Katamehi tīhi? What three?

Iddhipāį¹ihāriyena, ādesanāpāį¹ihāriyena, anusāsanÄ«pāį¹ihāriyenaā€”A demonstration of psychic power, a demonstration of revealing, and a demonstration of instruction.

imehi kho, bhikkhave, tÄ«hi dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu accantaniį¹į¹ho hoti, accantayogakkhemÄ« accantabrahmacārÄ« accantapariyosāno seį¹į¹ho devamanussānaį¹.

What three?

Sammādiį¹į¹hiyā, sammāƱāį¹‡ena, sammāvimuttiyāā€”Right view, right knowledge, and right freedom.

imehi kho, bhikkhave, tÄ«hi dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu accantaniį¹į¹ho hoti accantayogakkhemÄ« accantabrahmacārÄ« accantapariyosāno seį¹į¹ho devamanussānaį¹. A mendicant with these three qualities has reached the ultimate end, the ultimate sanctuary from the yoke, the ultimate spiritual life, the ultimate goal. They are best among gods and humans.

DvÄ«hi, bhikkhave, dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu accantaniį¹į¹ho hoti accantayogakkhemÄ« accantabrahmacārÄ« accantapariyosāno seį¹į¹ho devamanussānaį¹. A mendicant who has two qualities has reached the ultimate end, the ultimate sanctuary from the yoke, the ultimate spiritual life, the ultimate goal. They are best among gods and humans.

Katamehi dvīhi? What two?

Vijjāya, caraį¹‡enaā€”Knowledge and conduct.

imehi kho, bhikkhave, dvÄ«hi dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu accantaniį¹į¹ho hoti accantayogakkhemÄ« accantabrahmacārÄ« accantapariyosāno seį¹į¹ho devamanussānaį¹. Brahmunā pesā, bhikkhave, sanaį¹…kumārena gāthā bhāsitā: The divinity Sanaį¹…kumāra also spoke this verse:

ā€˜Khattiyo seį¹į¹ho janetasmiį¹, ā€˜The aristocrat is best among people

ye gottapaį¹isārino; who take clan as the standard.

Vijjācaraį¹‡asampanno, But one accomplished in knowledge and conduct

so seį¹į¹ho devamānuseā€™ti. is first among gods and humans.ā€™

Sā kho panesā, bhikkhave, sanaį¹…kumārena gāthā bhāsitā subhāsitā, no dubbhāsitā; atthasaį¹hitā, no anatthasaį¹hitā; anumatā mayā. Now, that verse spoken by the divinity Sanaį¹…kumāra is well spoken, not poorly spoken. Itā€™s beneficial, not pointless, and I agree with it.

Ahampi, bhikkhave, evaį¹ vadāmi: I also say:

ā€˜Khattiyo seį¹į¹ho janetasmiį¹, ā€˜The aristocrat is best among people

ye gottapaį¹isārino; who take clan as the standard.

Vijjācaraį¹‡asampanno, But one accomplished in knowledge and conduct
