Ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavÄ sakkesu viharati kapilavatthusmiį¹ nigrodhÄrÄme. At one time the Buddha was staying in the land of the Sakyans, near Kapilavatthu in the Banyan Tree Monastery.
Tena kho pana samayena sambahulÄ bhikkhÅ« bhagavato cÄ«varakammaį¹ karonti: At that time several mendicants were making a robe for the Buddha, thinking that
āniį¹į¹hitacÄ«varo bhagavÄ temÄsaccayena cÄrikaį¹ pakkamissatÄ«āti. when his robe was finished and the three months of the rains residence had passed the Buddha would set out wandering.
Assosi kho mahÄnÄmo sakko: MahÄnÄma the Sakyan heard about this.

kamitvÄ bhagavantaį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho mahÄnÄmo sakko bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: He went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him:
āsutaį¹ metaį¹, bhante: āSir, I have heard that
āsambahulÄ kira bhikkhÅ« bhagavato cÄ«varakammaį¹ karontiāseveral mendicants are making a robe for the Buddha, thinking that
niį¹į¹hitacÄ«varo bhagavÄ temÄsaccayena cÄrikaį¹ pakkamissatÄ«āti. when his robe was finished and the three months of the rains residence had passed the Buddha would set out wandering.
Tesaį¹ no, bhante, nÄnÄvihÄrehi viharataį¹ kenassa vihÄrena vihÄtabbanāti? Now, we spend our life in various ways. Which of these should we practice?ā
āSÄdhu sÄdhu, mahÄnÄma. āGood, good, MahÄnÄma!
Etaį¹ kho, mahÄnÄma, tumhÄkaį¹ patirÅ«paį¹ kulaputtÄnaį¹, yaį¹ tumhe tathÄgataį¹ upasaį¹
kamitvÄ puccheyyÄtha: Itās appropriate that gentlemen such as you come to me and ask:
ātesaį¹ no, bhante, nÄnÄvihÄrehi viharataį¹ kenassa vihÄrena vihÄtabbanāti? āWe spend our life in various ways. Which of these should we practice?ā
Saddho kho, mahÄnÄma, ÄrÄdhako hoti, no assaddho; The faithful succeed, not the faithless.
ÄraddhavÄ«riyo ÄrÄdhako hoti, no kusÄ«to; The energetic succeed, not the lazy.
upaį¹į¹hitassati ÄrÄdhako hoti, no muį¹į¹hassati; The mindful succeed, not the unmindful.
samÄhito ÄrÄdhako hoti, no asamÄhito; Those with immersion succeed, not those without immersion.
paƱƱavÄ ÄrÄdhako hoti, no duppaƱƱo. The wise succeed, not the witless.
Imesu kho tvaį¹, mahÄnÄma, paƱcasu dhammesu patiį¹į¹hÄya cha dhamme uttari bhÄveyyÄsi. When youāre grounded on these five things, go on to develop six further things.
Idha tvaį¹, mahÄnÄma, tathÄgataį¹ anussareyyÄsi: Firstly, you should recollect the Realized One:
āitipi so bhagavÄ arahaį¹ sammÄsambuddho vijjÄcaraį¹asampanno sugato lokavidÅ« anuttaro purisadammasÄrathi satthÄ devamanussÄnaį¹ buddho bhagavÄāti. āThat Blessed One is perfected, a fully awakened Buddha, accomplished in knowledge and conduct, holy, knower of the world, supreme guide for those who wish to train, teacher of gods and humans, awakened, blessed.ā
Yasmiį¹, mahÄnÄma, samaye ariyasÄvako tathÄgataį¹ anussarati, nevassa tasmiį¹ samaye rÄgapariyuį¹į¹hitaį¹ cittaį¹ hoti, na dosapariyuį¹į¹hitaį¹ cittaį¹ hoti, na mohapariyuį¹į¹hitaį¹ cittaį¹ hoti; When a noble disciple recollects the Realized One their mind is not full of greed, hate, and delusion.
ujugatamevassa tasmiį¹ samaye cittaį¹ hoti tathÄgataį¹ Ärabbha. At that time their mind is unswerving, based on the Realized One.
Ujugatacitto kho pana, mahÄnÄma, ariyasÄvako labhati atthavedaį¹, labhati dhammavedaį¹, labhati dhammÅ«pasaį¹hitaį¹ pÄmojjaį¹. A noble disciple whose mind is unswerving finds inspiration in the meaning and the teaching, and finds joy connected with the teaching.
Pamuditassa pÄ«ti jÄyati, pÄ«timanassa kÄyo passambhati, passaddhakÄyo sukhaį¹ vediyati, sukhino cittaį¹ samÄdhiyati. When theyāre joyful, rapture springs up. When the mind is full of rapture, the body becomes tranquil. When the body is tranquil, they feel bliss. And when theyāre blissful, the mind becomes immersed in samÄdhi.
Ayaį¹ vuccati, mahÄnÄma, ariyasÄvako visamagatÄya pajÄya samappatto viharati, sabyÄpajjÄya pajÄya abyÄpajjo viharati, dhammasotasamÄpanno buddhÄnussatiį¹ bhÄveti. This is called a noble disciple who lives in balance among people who are unbalanced, and lives untroubled among people who are troubled. Theyāve entered the stream of the teaching and developed the recollection of the Buddha.
Puna caparaį¹ tvaį¹, mahÄnÄma, dhammaį¹ anussareyyÄsi: Furthermore, you should recollect the teaching:
āsvÄkkhÄto bhagavatÄ dhammo sandiį¹į¹hiko akÄliko ehipassiko opaneyyiko paccattaį¹ veditabbo viĆ±Ć±Å«hÄ«āti. āThe teaching is well explained by the Buddhaāapparent in the present life, immediately effective, inviting inspection, relevant, so that sensible people can know it for themselves.ā

gho, yadidaį¹ cattÄri purisayugÄni aį¹į¹ha purisapuggalÄ, esa bhagavato sÄvakasaį¹
gho Ähuneyyo pÄhuneyyo dakkhiį¹eyyo aƱjalikaraį¹Ä«yo anuttaraį¹ puƱƱakkhettaį¹ lokassÄāti. āThe Saį¹
gha of the Buddhaās disciples is practicing the way thatās good, sincere, systematic, and proper. It consists of the four pairs, the eight individuals. This is the Saį¹
gha of the Buddhaās disciples that is worthy of offerings dedicated to the gods, worthy of hospitality, worthy of a religious donation, worthy of greeting with joined palms, and is the supreme field of merit for the world.ā

Puna caparaį¹ tvaį¹, mahÄnÄma, attano sÄ«lÄni anussareyyÄsi akhaį¹įøÄni acchiddÄni asabalÄni akammÄsÄni bhujissÄni viƱƱuppasatthÄni aparÄmaį¹į¹hÄni samÄdhisaį¹vattanikÄni. Furthermore, you should recollect your own ethical conduct, which is intact, impeccable, spotless, and unmarred, liberating, praised by sensible people, not mistaken, and leading to immersion.

ālÄbhÄ vata me, suladdhaį¹ vata me, āIām so fortunate, so very fortunate.
yohaį¹ maccheramalapariyuį¹į¹hitÄya pajÄya vigatamalamaccherena cetasÄ agÄraį¹ ajjhÄvasÄmi muttacÄgo payatapÄį¹i vossaggarato yÄcayogo dÄnasaį¹vibhÄgaratoāti. Among people with hearts full of the stain of stinginess I live at home rid of stinginess, freely generous, open-handed, loving to let go, committed to charity, loving to give and to share.ā

āsanti devÄ cÄtumahÄrÄjikÄ, santi devÄ tÄvatiį¹sÄ, santi devÄ yÄmÄ, santi devÄ tusitÄ, santi devÄ nimmÄnaratino, santi devÄ paranimmitavasavattino, santi devÄ brahmakÄyikÄ, santi devÄ tatuttari. āThere are the gods of the four great kings, the gods of the thirty-three, the gods of Yama, the joyful gods, the gods who love to imagine, the gods who control what is imagined by others, the gods of the Divinityās host, and gods even higher than these.
YathÄrÅ«pÄya saddhÄya samannÄgatÄ tÄ devatÄ ito cutÄ tatthÅ«papannÄ, mayhampi tathÄrÅ«pÄ saddhÄ saį¹vijjati. When those deities passed away from here, they were reborn there because of their faith, ethics, learning, generosity, and wisdom. I, too, have the same kind of faith, ethics, learning, generosity, and wisdom.ā
