Paį¹­hamamahānāmasutta With Mahānāma (1st)

Ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavā sakkesu viharati kapilavatthusmiį¹ nigrodhārāme. At one time the Buddha was staying in the land of the Sakyans, near Kapilavatthu in the Banyan Tree Monastery.

Tena kho pana samayena sambahulā bhikkhÅ« bhagavato cÄ«varakammaį¹ karonti: At that time several mendicants were making a robe for the Buddha, thinking that

ā€œniį¹­į¹­hitacÄ«varo bhagavā temāsaccayena cārikaį¹ pakkamissatÄ«ā€ti. when his robe was finished and the three months of the rains residence had passed the Buddha would set out wandering.

Assosi kho mahānāmo sakko: Mahānāma the Sakyan heard about this.

ā€œsambahulā kira bhikkhÅ« bhagavato cÄ«varakammaį¹ karonti:

ā€˜niį¹­į¹­hitacÄ«varo bhagavā temāsaccayena cārikaį¹ pakkamissatÄ«ā€™ā€ti.

Atha kho mahānāmo sakko yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavantaį¹ abhivādetvā ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho mahānāmo sakko bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: He went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him:

ā€œsutaį¹ metaį¹, bhante: ā€œSir, I have heard that

ā€˜sambahulā kira bhikkhÅ« bhagavato cÄ«varakammaį¹ karontiā€”several mendicants are making a robe for the Buddha, thinking that

niį¹­į¹­hitacÄ«varo bhagavā temāsaccayena cārikaį¹ pakkamissatÄ«ā€™ti. when his robe was finished and the three months of the rains residence had passed the Buddha would set out wandering.

Tesaį¹ no, bhante, nānāvihārehi viharataį¹ kenassa vihārena vihātabbanā€ti? Now, we spend our life in various ways. Which of these should we practice?ā€

ā€œSādhu sādhu, mahānāma. ā€œGood, good, Mahānāma!

Etaį¹ kho, mahānāma, tumhākaį¹ patirÅ«paį¹ kulaputtānaį¹, yaį¹ tumhe tathāgataį¹ upasaį¹…kamitvā puccheyyātha: Itā€™s appropriate that gentlemen such as you come to me and ask:

ā€˜tesaį¹ no, bhante, nānāvihārehi viharataį¹ kenassa vihārena vihātabbanā€™ti? ā€˜We spend our life in various ways. Which of these should we practice?ā€™

Saddho kho, mahānāma, ārādhako hoti, no assaddho; The faithful succeed, not the faithless.

āraddhavīriyo ārādhako hoti, no kusīto; The energetic succeed, not the lazy.

upaį¹­į¹­hitassati ārādhako hoti, no muį¹­į¹­hassati; The mindful succeed, not the unmindful.

samāhito ārādhako hoti, no asamāhito; Those with immersion succeed, not those without immersion.

paƱƱavā ārādhako hoti, no duppaƱƱo. The wise succeed, not the witless.

Imesu kho tvaį¹, mahānāma, paƱcasu dhammesu patiį¹­į¹­hāya cha dhamme uttari bhāveyyāsi. When youā€™re grounded on these five things, go on to develop six further things.

Idha tvaį¹, mahānāma, tathāgataį¹ anussareyyāsi: Firstly, you should recollect the Realized One:

ā€˜itipi so bhagavā arahaį¹ sammāsambuddho vijjācaraį¹‡asampanno sugato lokavidÅ« anuttaro purisadammasārathi satthā devamanussānaį¹ buddho bhagavāā€™ti. ā€˜That Blessed One is perfected, a fully awakened Buddha, accomplished in knowledge and conduct, holy, knower of the world, supreme guide for those who wish to train, teacher of gods and humans, awakened, blessed.ā€™

Yasmiį¹, mahānāma, samaye ariyasāvako tathāgataį¹ anussarati, nevassa tasmiį¹ samaye rāgapariyuį¹­į¹­hitaį¹ cittaį¹ hoti, na dosapariyuį¹­į¹­hitaį¹ cittaį¹ hoti, na mohapariyuį¹­į¹­hitaį¹ cittaį¹ hoti; When a noble disciple recollects the Realized One their mind is not full of greed, hate, and delusion.

ujugatamevassa tasmiį¹ samaye cittaį¹ hoti tathāgataį¹ ārabbha. At that time their mind is unswerving, based on the Realized One.

Ujugatacitto kho pana, mahānāma, ariyasāvako labhati atthavedaį¹, labhati dhammavedaį¹, labhati dhammÅ«pasaį¹hitaį¹ pāmojjaį¹. A noble disciple whose mind is unswerving finds inspiration in the meaning and the teaching, and finds joy connected with the teaching.

Pamuditassa pÄ«ti jāyati, pÄ«timanassa kāyo passambhati, passaddhakāyo sukhaį¹ vediyati, sukhino cittaį¹ samādhiyati. When theyā€™re joyful, rapture springs up. When the mind is full of rapture, the body becomes tranquil. When the body is tranquil, they feel bliss. And when theyā€™re blissful, the mind becomes immersed in samādhi.

Ayaį¹ vuccati, mahānāma, ariyasāvako visamagatāya pajāya samappatto viharati, sabyāpajjāya pajāya abyāpajjo viharati, dhammasotasamāpanno buddhānussatiį¹ bhāveti. This is called a noble disciple who lives in balance among people who are unbalanced, and lives untroubled among people who are troubled. Theyā€™ve entered the stream of the teaching and developed the recollection of the Buddha.

Puna caparaį¹ tvaį¹, mahānāma, dhammaį¹ anussareyyāsi: Furthermore, you should recollect the teaching:

ā€˜svākkhāto bhagavatā dhammo sandiį¹­į¹­hiko akāliko ehipassiko opaneyyiko paccattaį¹ veditabbo viĆ±Ć±Å«hÄ«ā€™ti. ā€˜The teaching is well explained by the Buddhaā€”apparent in the present life, immediately effective, inviting inspection, relevant, so that sensible people can know it for themselves.ā€™

Yasmiį¹, mahānāma, samaye ariyasāvako dhammaį¹ anussarati, nevassa tasmiį¹ samaye rāgapariyuį¹­į¹­hitaį¹ cittaį¹ hoti, na dosapariyuį¹­į¹­hitaį¹ cittaį¹ hoti, na mohapariyuį¹­į¹­hitaį¹ cittaį¹ hoti; When a noble disciple recollects the teaching their mind is not full of greed, hate, and delusion. ā€¦

Puna caparaį¹ tvaį¹, mahānāma, saį¹…ghaį¹ anussareyyāsi: Furthermore, you should recollect the Saį¹…gha:

ā€˜suppaį¹­ipanno bhagavato sāvakasaį¹…gho, ujuppaį¹­ipanno bhagavato sāvakasaį¹…gho, Ʊāyappaį¹­ipanno bhagavato sāvakasaį¹…gho, sāmÄ«cippaį¹­ipanno bhagavato sāvakasaį¹…gho, yadidaį¹ cattāri purisayugāni aį¹­į¹­ha purisapuggalā, esa bhagavato sāvakasaį¹…gho āhuneyyo pāhuneyyo dakkhiį¹‡eyyo aƱjalikaraį¹‡Ä«yo anuttaraį¹ puƱƱakkhettaį¹ lokassāā€™ti. ā€˜The Saį¹…gha of the Buddhaā€™s disciples is practicing the way thatā€™s good, sincere, systematic, and proper. It consists of the four pairs, the eight individuals. This is the Saį¹…gha of the Buddhaā€™s disciples that is worthy of offerings dedicated to the gods, worthy of hospitality, worthy of a religious donation, worthy of greeting with joined palms, and is the supreme field of merit for the world.ā€™

Yasmiį¹, mahānāma, samaye ariyasāvako saį¹…ghaį¹ anussarati, nevassa tasmiį¹ samaye rāgapariyuį¹­į¹­hitaį¹ cittaį¹ hoti, na dosapariyuį¹­į¹­hitaį¹ cittaį¹ hoti, na mohapariyuį¹­į¹­hitaį¹ cittaį¹ hoti; When a noble disciple recollects the Saį¹…gha their mind is not full of greed, hate, and delusion. ā€¦

ujugatamevassa tasmiį¹ samaye cittaį¹ hoti saį¹…ghaį¹ ārabbha.

Ujugatacitto kho pana, mahānāma, ariyasāvako labhati atthavedaį¹, labhati dhammavedaį¹, labhati dhammÅ«pasaį¹hitaį¹ pāmojjaį¹.

Pamuditassa pÄ«ti jāyati, pÄ«timanassa kāyo passambhati, passaddhakāyo sukhaį¹ vediyati, sukhino cittaį¹ samādhiyati.

Ayaį¹ vuccati, mahānāma, ariyasāvako visamagatāya pajāya samappatto viharati, sabyāpajjāya pajāya abyāpajjo viharati, dhammasotasamāpanno saį¹…ghānussatiį¹ bhāveti. This is called a noble disciple who lives in balance among people who are unbalanced, and lives untroubled among people who are troubled. Theyā€™ve entered the stream of the teaching and developed the recollection of the Saį¹…gha.

Puna caparaį¹ tvaį¹, mahānāma, attano sÄ«lāni anussareyyāsi akhaį¹‡įøÄni acchiddāni asabalāni akammāsāni bhujissāni viƱƱuppasatthāni aparāmaį¹­į¹­hāni samādhisaį¹vattanikāni. Furthermore, you should recollect your own ethical conduct, which is intact, impeccable, spotless, and unmarred, liberating, praised by sensible people, not mistaken, and leading to immersion.

Yasmiį¹, mahānāma, samaye ariyasāvako sÄ«laį¹ anussarati, nevassa tasmiį¹ samaye rāgapariyuį¹­į¹­hitaį¹ cittaį¹ hoti, na dosapariyuį¹­į¹­hitaį¹ cittaį¹ hoti, na mohapariyuį¹­į¹­hitaį¹ cittaį¹ hoti; When a noble disciple recollects their ethical conduct their mind is not full of greed, hate, and delusion. ā€¦

ujugatamevassa tasmiį¹ samaye cittaį¹ hoti sÄ«laį¹ ārabbha.

Ujugatacitto kho pana, mahānāma, ariyasāvako labhati atthavedaį¹, labhati dhammavedaį¹, labhati dhammÅ«pasaį¹hitaį¹ pāmojjaį¹.

Pamuditassa pÄ«ti jāyati, pÄ«timanassa kāyo passambhati, passaddhakāyo sukhaį¹ vediyati, sukhino cittaį¹ samādhiyati.

Ayaį¹ vuccati, mahānāma, ariyasāvako visamagatāya pajāya samappatto viharati, sabyāpajjāya pajāya abyāpajjo viharati, dhammasotasamāpanno sÄ«lānussatiį¹ bhāveti. This is called a noble disciple who lives in balance among people who are unbalanced, and lives untroubled among people who are troubled. Theyā€™ve entered the stream of the teaching and developed the recollection of their ethical conduct.

Puna caparaį¹ tvaį¹, mahānāma, attano cāgaį¹ anussareyyāsi: Furthermore, you should recollect your own generosity:

ā€˜lābhā vata me, suladdhaį¹ vata me, ā€˜Iā€™m so fortunate, so very fortunate.

yohaį¹ maccheramalapariyuį¹­į¹­hitāya pajāya vigatamalamaccherena cetasā agāraį¹ ajjhāvasāmi muttacāgo payatapāį¹‡i vossaggarato yācayogo dānasaį¹vibhāgaratoā€™ti. Among people with hearts full of the stain of stinginess I live at home rid of stinginess, freely generous, open-handed, loving to let go, committed to charity, loving to give and to share.ā€™

Yasmiį¹, mahānāma, samaye ariyasāvako cāgaį¹ anussarati, nevassa tasmiį¹ samaye rāgapariyuį¹­į¹­hitaį¹ cittaį¹ hoti, na dosapariyuį¹­į¹­hitaį¹ cittaį¹ hoti, na mohapariyuį¹­į¹­hitaį¹ cittaį¹ hoti; When a noble disciple recollects their own generosity their mind is not full of greed, hate, and delusion. ā€¦

ujugatamevassa tasmiį¹ samaye cittaį¹ hoti cāgaį¹ ārabbha.

Ujugatacitto kho pana, mahānāma, ariyasāvako labhati atthavedaį¹, labhati dhammavedaį¹, labhati dhammÅ«pasaį¹hitaį¹ pāmojjaį¹.

Puna caparaį¹ tvaį¹, mahānāma, devatā anussareyyāsi: Furthermore, you should recollect the deities:

ā€˜santi devā cātumahārājikā, santi devā tāvatiį¹sā, santi devā yāmā, santi devā tusitā, santi devā nimmānaratino, santi devā paranimmitavasavattino, santi devā brahmakāyikā, santi devā tatuttari. ā€˜There are the gods of the four great kings, the gods of the thirty-three, the gods of Yama, the joyful gods, the gods who love to imagine, the gods who control what is imagined by others, the gods of the Divinityā€™s host, and gods even higher than these.

YathārÅ«pāya saddhāya samannāgatā tā devatā ito cutā tatthÅ«papannā, mayhampi tathārÅ«pā saddhā saį¹vijjati. When those deities passed away from here, they were reborn there because of their faith, ethics, learning, generosity, and wisdom. I, too, have the same kind of faith, ethics, learning, generosity, and wisdom.ā€™

YathārÅ«pena sÄ«lena samannāgatā tā devatā ito cutā tatthÅ«papannā, mayhampi tathārÅ«paį¹ sÄ«laį¹ saį¹vijjati.

YathārÅ«pena sutena samannāgatā tā devatā ito cutā tatthÅ«papannā, mayhampi tathārÅ«paį¹ sutaį¹ saį¹vijjati.

YathārÅ«pena cāgena samannāgatā tā devatā ito cutā tatthÅ«papannā, mayhampi tathārÅ«po cāgo saį¹vijjati.

YathārÅ«pāya paƱƱāya samannāgatā tā devatā ito cutā tatthÅ«papannā, mayhampi tathārÅ«pā paƱƱā saį¹vijjatÄ«ā€™ti.

Yasmiį¹, mahānāma, samaye ariyasāvako attano ca tāsaƱca devatānaį¹ saddhaƱca sÄ«laƱca sutaƱca cāgaƱca paƱƱaƱca anussarati, nevassa tasmiį¹ samaye rāgapariyuį¹­į¹­hitaį¹ cittaį¹ hoti, na dosapariyuį¹­į¹­hitaį¹ cittaį¹ hoti, na mohapariyuį¹­į¹­hitaį¹ cittaį¹ hoti; When a noble disciple recollects the faith, ethics, learning, generosity, and wisdom of both themselves and the deities their mind is not full of greed, hate, and delusion.

ujugatamevassa tasmiį¹ samaye cittaį¹ hoti devatā ārabbha. At that time their mind is unswerving, based on the deities.

Ujugatacitto kho pana, mahānāma, ariyasāvako labhati atthavedaį¹, labhati dhammavedaį¹, labhati dhammÅ«pasaį¹hitaį¹ pāmojjaį¹. A noble disciple whose mind is unswerving finds inspiration in the meaning and the teaching, and finds joy connected with the teaching.
