Jāliyasutta With Jāliya

Evaį¹ me sutaį¹ā€”So I have heard.

ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavā kosambiyaį¹ viharati ghositārāme. At one time the Buddha was staying near KosambÄ«, in Ghositaā€™s Monastery.

Tena kho pana samayena dve pabbajitāā€”Now at that time two renunciatesā€”

muį¹‡įøiyo ca paribbājako jāliyo ca dārupattikantevāsÄ« yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kamiį¹su; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavatā saddhiį¹ sammodiį¹su. the wanderer Muį¹‡įøiya and Jāliya, the pupil of the wood-bowl asceticā€”came to the Buddha and exchanged greetings with him.

SammodanÄ«yaį¹ kathaį¹ sāraį¹‡Ä«yaį¹ vÄ«tisāretvā ekamantaį¹ aį¹­į¹­haį¹su. Ekamantaį¹ į¹­hitā kho te dve pabbajitā bhagavantaį¹ etadavocuį¹: When the greetings and polite conversation were over, they stood to one side and said to the Buddha,

ā€œkiį¹ nu kho, āvuso gotama, taį¹ jÄ«vaį¹ taį¹ sarÄ«raį¹, udāhu aƱƱaį¹ jÄ«vaį¹ aƱƱaį¹ sarÄ«ranā€ti? ā€œReverend Gotama, are the soul and the body the same thing, or they are different things?ā€

ā€œTena hāvuso, suį¹‡Ätha sādhukaį¹ manasi karotha, bhāsissāmÄ«ā€ti. ā€œWell then, reverends, listen and apply your mind well, I will speak.ā€

ā€œEvamāvusoā€ti kho te dve pabbajitā bhagavato paccassosuį¹. ā€œYes, reverend,ā€ they replied.

Bhagavā etadavoca: The Buddha said this:

ā€œidhāvuso, tathāgato loke uppajjati arahaį¹, sammāsambuddho ā€¦peā€¦ ā€œTake the case when a Realized One arises in the world, perfected, a fully awakened Buddha ā€¦

Evaį¹ kho, āvuso, bhikkhu sÄ«lasampanno hoti. Thatā€™s how a mendicant is accomplished in ethics. ā€¦

ā€¦peā€¦

Paį¹­hamaį¹ jhānaį¹ upasampajja viharati. They enter and remain in the first absorption ā€¦

Yo kho, āvuso, bhikkhu evaį¹ jānāti evaį¹ passati, kallaį¹ nu kho tassetaį¹ vacanāya: When a mendicant knows and sees like this, would it be appropriate to say of them:

ā€˜taį¹ jÄ«vaį¹ taį¹ sarÄ«ranā€™ti vā ā€˜aƱƱaį¹ jÄ«vaį¹ aƱƱaį¹ sarÄ«ranā€™ti vāti. ā€˜The soul and the body are the same thingā€™ or ā€˜The soul and the body are different thingsā€™?ā€

Yo so, āvuso, bhikkhu evaį¹ jānāti evaį¹ passati, kallaį¹ tassetaį¹ vacanāya: ā€œIt would, reverend.ā€

ā€˜taį¹ jÄ«vaį¹ taį¹ sarÄ«ranā€™ti vā ā€˜aƱƱaį¹ jÄ«vaį¹ aƱƱaį¹ sarÄ«ranā€™ti vāti.

Ahaį¹ kho panetaį¹, āvuso, evaį¹ jānāmi evaį¹ passāmi. ā€œBut reverends, I know and see like this.

Atha ca panāhaį¹ na vadāmi: Nevertheless, I do not say:

ā€˜taį¹ jÄ«vaį¹ taį¹ sarÄ«ranā€™ti vā ā€˜aƱƱaį¹ jÄ«vaį¹ aƱƱaį¹ sarÄ«ranā€™ti vā ā€¦peā€¦ ā€˜The soul and the body are the same thingā€™ or ā€˜The soul and the body are different thingsā€™. ā€¦

dutiyaį¹ jhānaį¹ ā€¦ They enter and remain in the second absorption ā€¦

Yo kho, āvuso, bhikkhu evaį¹ jānāti evaį¹ passati, kallaį¹ nu kho tassetaį¹ vacanāya: When a mendicant knows and sees like this, would it be appropriate to say of them:

ā€˜taį¹ jÄ«vaį¹ taį¹ sarÄ«ranā€™ti vā ā€˜aƱƱaį¹ jÄ«vaį¹ aƱƱaį¹ sarÄ«ranā€™ti vāti? ā€˜The soul and the body are the same thingā€™ or ā€˜The soul and the body are different thingsā€™?ā€

Ʊāį¹‡adassanāya cittaį¹ abhinÄ«harati abhininnāmeti ā€¦ They project and extend the mind toward knowledge and vision ā€¦

ā€˜taį¹ jÄ«vaį¹ taį¹ sarÄ«ranā€™ti vā ā€˜aƱƱaį¹ jÄ«vaį¹ aƱƱaį¹ sarÄ«ranā€™ti vāti. ā€˜The soul and the body are the same thingā€™ or ā€˜The soul and the body are different thingsā€™?ā€

ā€¦peā€¦ Nāparaį¹ itthattāyāti pajānāti. They understand: ā€˜ā€¦ there is nothing further for this place.ā€™

Yo kho, āvuso, bhikkhu evaį¹ jānāti evaį¹ passati, kallaį¹ nu kho tassetaį¹ vacanāya: When a mendicant knows and sees like this, would it be appropriate to say of them:

ā€˜taį¹ jÄ«vaį¹ taį¹ sarÄ«ranā€™ti vā ā€˜aƱƱaį¹ jÄ«vaį¹ aƱƱaį¹ sarÄ«ranā€™ti vāti? ā€˜The soul and the body are the same thingā€™ or ā€˜The soul and the body are different thingsā€™?ā€

Yo so, āvuso, bhikkhu evaį¹ jānāti evaį¹ passati, na kallaį¹ tassetaį¹ vacanāya: ā€œIt would not, reverend.ā€

ā€˜taį¹ jÄ«vaį¹ taį¹ sarÄ«ranā€™ti vā ā€˜aƱƱaį¹ jÄ«vaį¹ aƱƱaį¹ sarÄ«ranā€™ti vāti.

Ahaį¹ kho panetaį¹, āvuso, evaį¹ jānāmi evaį¹ passāmi. ā€œBut reverends, I know and see like this.

Atha ca panāhaį¹ na vadāmi: Nevertheless, I do not say:

ā€˜taį¹ jÄ«vaį¹ taį¹ sarÄ«ranā€™ti vā ā€˜aƱƱaį¹ jÄ«vaį¹ aƱƱaį¹ sarÄ«ranā€™ti vāā€ti. ā€˜The soul and the body are the same thingā€™ or ā€˜The soul and the body are different thingsā€™.ā€

Idamavoca bhagavā. That is what the Buddha said.

Attamanā te dve pabbajitā bhagavato bhāsitaį¹ abhinandunti. Satisfied, the two renunciates approved what the Buddha said.

Jāliyasuttaį¹ niį¹­į¹­hitaį¹ sattamaį¹.
