Akitticariya Akittiā€™s Conduct

Namo tassa Bhagavato Arahato Sammāsambuddhassa. Homage to that Blessed One, the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha!

ā€œKappe ca satasahasse, ā€œFor a hundred thousand eons

caturo ca asaį¹…khiye; and four incalculable ages,

Etthantare yaį¹ caritaį¹, all my conduct in that period

sabbaį¹ taį¹ bodhipācanaį¹. ripens in awakening.

AtÄ«takappe caritaį¹, Setting aside my conduct

į¹­hapayitvā bhavābhave; in past eons through different lives,

Imamhi kappe caritaį¹, I shall speak of my conduct

pavakkhissaį¹ suį¹‡ohi me. in this eon, hear me.

Yadā ahaį¹ brahāraƱƱe, When I lived having plunged

suƱƱe vipinakānane; into the formidable jungle

Ajjhogāhetvā viharāmi, of empty thickets and glades,

akitti nāma tāpaso. my name was Akitti the mortifier.

Tadā maį¹ tapatejena, Then, burned by the fires of my mortification,

santatto tidivābhibhū; the sovereign of the heaven of the Thirty-three,

Dhārento brāhmaį¹‡avaį¹‡į¹‡aį¹, came to me for alms

bhikkhāya maį¹ upāgami. in the form of a brahmin.

Pavanā ābhataį¹ paį¹‡į¹‡aį¹, I had gathered leaves from the forest

atelaƱca aloį¹‡ikaį¹; without oil or salt,

Mama dvāre į¹­hitaį¹ disvā, and seeing him standing at my door,

sakaį¹­Ähena ākiriį¹. I placed them in his pot.

Tassa datvānahaį¹ paį¹‡į¹‡aį¹, After giving him the leaves

nikkujjitvāna bhājanaį¹; I turned over my plate,

Punesanaį¹ jahitvāna, and having given up on seeking more food,

pāvisiį¹ paį¹‡į¹‡asālakaį¹. I entered my hut of leaves.

Dutiyampi tatiyampi, A second and a third time

upagaƱchi mamantikaį¹; he came to me.

Akampito anolaggo, Undisturbed, ungrasping,

evamevamadāsahaį¹. I gave in just the same way.

Na me tappaccayā atthi, That is the reason why

sarÄ«rasmiį¹ vivaį¹‡į¹‡iyaį¹; my body is not discolored.

Pītisukhena ratiyā, In rapture and bliss free of relishing

vÄ«tināmemi taį¹ divaį¹. I spend the day.

Yadi māsampi dvemāsaį¹, If even for a month or two

dakkhiį¹‡eyyaį¹ varaį¹ labhe; I were to find a worthy recipient,

Akampito anolīno, undisturbed, unattached,

dadeyyaį¹ dānamuttamaį¹. I would give the supreme gift.

Na tassa dānaį¹ dadamāno, While giving him that gift

yasaį¹ lābhaƱca patthayiį¹; I did not wish for fame or profit.

SabbaƱƱutaį¹ patthayāno, Wishing for omniscience

tāni kammāni ācarinā€ti. I performed those deeds.ā€
