khasavhayo; a brahmin called Saį¹
kha,
MahÄsamuddaį¹ taritukÄmo, wanting to cross the great ocean,
UpagacchÄmi paį¹į¹anaį¹. I was on my way to the port.
Tatthaddasaį¹ paį¹ipathe, There I saw across the way
Sayambhuį¹ aparÄjitaį¹; one self-awakened, undefeated,
KantÄraddhÄnaį¹ paį¹ipannaį¹, walking a desert road
TattÄya kaį¹hinabhÅ«miyÄ. whose ground was hot and rough.
Tamahaį¹ paį¹ipathe disvÄ, Seeing him across the way,
imamatthaį¹ vicintayiį¹; I thought this:
āIdaį¹ khettaį¹ anuppattaį¹, āA field has appeared
puƱƱakÄmassa jantuno. for a person desiring merit.
YathÄ kassako puriso, Now suppose a farmer
khettaį¹ disvÄ mahÄgamaį¹; seeing a fertile field
Tattha bÄ«jaį¹ na ropeti, does not sow seed there,
na so dhaƱƱena atthiko. then they are not in need of grain.
EvamevÄhaį¹ puƱƱakÄmo, So too, if I, desiring merit,
DisvÄ khettavaruttamaį¹; seeing a supreme excellent field,
Yadi tattha kÄraį¹ na karomi, do not render service there,
NÄhaį¹ puƱƱena atthiko. then I am not in need of merit.
YathÄ amacco muddikÄmo, Or suppose a minister seeking the royal seal
raƱƱo antepure jane; of authority over the people of the court,
Na deti tesaį¹ dhanadhaƱƱaį¹, does not give them money and grain,
muddito parihÄyati. their authority dwindles.
EvamevÄhaį¹ puƱƱakÄmo, So too, if I, desiring merit,
Vipulaį¹ disvÄna dakkhiį¹aį¹; seeing an abundantly worthy recipient,
Yadi tassa dÄnaį¹ na dadÄmi, do not give gifts to them,
ParihÄyissÄmi puƱƱatoā. I will dwindle in merit.ā
EvÄhaį¹ cintayitvÄna, Reflecting in this way,
orohitvÄ upÄhanÄ; I took off my sandals
Tassa pÄdÄni vanditvÄ, and bowed to his feet,
adÄsiį¹ chattupÄhanaį¹. giving him an umbrella and sandals.
TenevÄhaį¹ sataguį¹ato, Though I was a hundred times
SukhumÄlo sukhedhito; more delicate and dainty than him,
Api ca dÄnaį¹ paripÅ«rento, fulfilling my generosity,
Evaį¹ tassa adÄsahanāti. I gave like this to him.ā
