Kururājacariya Kururājaā€™s Conduct

ā€œPunāparaį¹ yadā homi, ā€œThen again when I reigned

indapatthe puruttame; in Indapatta, the capital city,

Rājā dhanaƱcayo nāma, as the king named DhanaƱjaya

kusale dasahupāgato. I was blessed with the ten skillful deeds.

Kaliį¹…garaį¹­į¹­havisayā, From the realm of Kaliį¹…ga

brāhmaį¹‡Ä upagaƱchu maį¹; brahmins came to me

Āyācuį¹ maį¹ hatthināgaį¹, requesting the royal elephant

dhaƱƱaį¹ maį¹…galasammataį¹. that was lucky and deemed auspicious.

ā€˜Avuį¹­į¹­hiko janapado, ā€˜Our nation is suffering from drought,

dubbhikkho chātako mahā; food is scarce and famine abounds,

Dadāhi pavaraį¹ nāgaį¹, please give the noble elephant

nÄ«laį¹ aƱjanasavhayaį¹ā€™. of midnight hue named AƱjana.ā€™

ā€˜Na me yācakamanuppatte, ā€˜When supplicants come to me

paį¹­ikkhepo anucchavo; it is unbefitting to refuse.

Mā me bhijji samādānaį¹, Let not my vow be broken,

dassāmi vipulaį¹ gajaį¹ā€™. I shall give the mighty elephant.ā€™

Nāgaį¹ gahetvā soį¹‡įøÄya, Taking the elephant by the trunk,

bhiį¹…gāre ratanāmaye; and a bejeweled ceremonial vessel,

Jalaį¹ hatthe ākiritvā, I sprinkled water on the hand,

brāhmaį¹‡Änaį¹ adaį¹ gajaį¹. and gave the elephant to the brahmins.

Tassa nāge padinnamhi, When I had given the elephant,

amaccā etadabravuį¹; my ministers said,

ā€˜Kiį¹ nu tuyhaį¹ varaį¹ nāgaį¹, ā€˜Why did you give the noble elephant

yācakānaį¹ padassasi. to the supplicants?

DhaƱƱaį¹ maį¹…galasampannaį¹, He was lucky and endowed with the auspicious,

saį¹…gāmavijayuttamaį¹; supreme victor in battle.

Tasmiį¹ nāge padinnamhi, Now you have given the elephant,

kiį¹ te rajjaį¹ karissatiā€™. how shall you govern the realm?ā€™

ā€˜Rajjampi me dade sabbaį¹, ā€˜I would give the entire realm

sarÄ«raį¹ dajjamattano; and my physical body as well.

SabbaƱƱutaį¹ piyaį¹ mayhaį¹, Omniscience is precious to me,

tasmā nāgaį¹ adāsahanā€™ā€ti. which is why I gave away the elephant.ā€™ā€

Kururājacariyaį¹ tatiyaį¹.
