āPunÄparaį¹ yadÄ homi, āThen again when I reigned
indapatthe puruttame; in Indapatta, the capital city,
RÄjÄ dhanaƱcayo nÄma, as the king named DhanaƱjaya
kusale dasahupÄgato. I was blessed with the ten skillful deeds.

galasammataį¹. that was lucky and deemed auspicious.
āAvuį¹į¹hiko janapado, āOur nation is suffering from drought,
dubbhikkho chÄtako mahÄ; food is scarce and famine abounds,
DadÄhi pavaraį¹ nÄgaį¹, please give the noble elephant
nÄ«laį¹ aƱjanasavhayaį¹ā. of midnight hue named AƱjana.ā
āNa me yÄcakamanuppatte, āWhen supplicants come to me
paį¹ikkhepo anucchavo; it is unbefitting to refuse.
MÄ me bhijji samÄdÄnaį¹, Let not my vow be broken,
dassÄmi vipulaį¹ gajaį¹ā. I shall give the mighty elephant.ā
NÄgaį¹ gahetvÄ soį¹įøÄya, Taking the elephant by the trunk,
bhiį¹
gÄre ratanÄmaye; and a bejeweled ceremonial vessel,
Jalaį¹ hatthe ÄkiritvÄ, I sprinkled water on the hand,
brÄhmaį¹Änaį¹ adaį¹ gajaį¹. and gave the elephant to the brahmins.
Tassa nÄge padinnamhi, When I had given the elephant,
amaccÄ etadabravuį¹; my ministers said,
āKiį¹ nu tuyhaį¹ varaį¹ nÄgaį¹, āWhy did you give the noble elephant
yÄcakÄnaį¹ padassasi. to the supplicants?
DhaƱƱaį¹ maį¹
galasampannaį¹, He was lucky and endowed with the auspicious,
saį¹
gÄmavijayuttamaį¹; supreme victor in battle.
Tasmiį¹ nÄge padinnamhi, Now you have given the elephant,
kiį¹ te rajjaį¹ karissatiā. how shall you govern the realm?ā
āRajjampi me dade sabbaį¹, āI would give the entire realm
sarÄ«raį¹ dajjamattano; and my physical body as well.
SabbaƱƱutaį¹ piyaį¹ mayhaį¹, Omniscience is precious to me,
tasmÄ nÄgaį¹ adÄsahanāāti. which is why I gave away the elephant.āā
