āYadÄhaį¹ amitayaso, āWhen I was Prince YudhaƱjaya
RÄjaputto yudhaƱjayo; of infinite fame,
UssÄvabinduį¹ sÅ«riyÄtape, I was stirred with urgency on seeing
Patitaį¹ disvÄna saį¹vijiį¹. a fallen dewdrop in the heat of the sun.
TaƱƱevÄdhipatiį¹ katvÄ, Taking that to be of prime importance,
saį¹vegamanubrÅ«hayiį¹; I fostered that urgency.
MÄtÄpitÅ« ca vanditvÄ, I bowed to my mother and father,
pabbajjamanuyÄcahaį¹. and begged permission to go forth.
YÄcanti maį¹ paƱjalikÄ, With joined palms,
sanegamÄ saraį¹į¹hakÄ; along with the citizens of town and country, they asked,
āAjjeva putta paį¹ipajja, āThis very day, rule this great land,

sanegame saraį¹į¹hake; with the citizens of town and country,

anapekkhova pariccajiį¹. as I forsook unconcerned.
Kevalaį¹ pathaviį¹ rajjaį¹, Kingship over the entire earth,
ƱÄtiparijanaį¹ yasaį¹; family, retinue, and fameā
CajamÄno na cintesiį¹, I gave them up without a second thought,
bodhiyÄyeva kÄraį¹Ä. because it was solely for awakening.
MÄtÄpitÄ na me dessÄ, I had no dislike of my parents,
napi me dessaį¹ mahÄyasaį¹; nor did I dislike the great fame.
SabbaƱƱutaį¹ piyaį¹ mayhaį¹, But because omniscience is precious to me,
tasmÄ rajjaį¹ pariccajināti. that is why I forsook kingship.ā
