ā€œPunāparaį¹ yadā homi, ā€œThen again when I was

maccharājā mahāsare; a fish king in a great lake,

Uį¹‡he sÅ«riyasantāpe, in the heat of the sun

sare udaka khīyatha. the water in the lake evaporated.

Tato kākā ca gijjhā ca, Then crows and vultures,

kaį¹…kā kulalasenakā; herons, hawks, and falcons,

Bhakkhayanti divārattiį¹, perched near the fish

macche upanisīdiya. and devoured them day and night.

Evaį¹ cintesahaį¹ tattha, There I had the following thought,

saha ƱātÄ«hi pÄ«įø·ito; being harassed with my relatives:

ā€˜Kena nu kho upāyena, ā€˜By what means

ƱātÄ« dukkhā pamocayeā€™. can I free my relatives from this suffering?ā€™

Vicintayitvā dhammatthaį¹, Considering the value of the Dhamma,

saccaį¹ addasa passayaį¹; I saw the truth as a support.

Sacce į¹­hatvā pamocesiį¹, Standing in the truth,

ƱātÄ«naį¹ taį¹ atikkhayaį¹. I freed my relatives from that holocaust.

Anussaritvā sataį¹ dhammaį¹, Recollecting the true Dhamma,

paramatthaį¹ vicintayaį¹; considered the ultimate goal,

Akāsiį¹ saccakiriyaį¹, I made a declaration of truth

yaį¹ loke dhuvasassataį¹. that would last eternally in the world.

ā€˜Yato sarāmi attānaį¹, ā€˜So long as I can recall myself,

yato pattosmi viƱƱutaį¹; since I became aware,

Nābhijānāmi saƱcicca, I do not recall deliberately

ekapāį¹‡ampi hiį¹sitaį¹. harming even a single living creature.

Etena saccavajjena, By this declaration of truth,

pajjunno abhivassatu; may Pajjuna rain down!

Abhitthanaya pajjunna, Thunder forth, Pajjuna!

nidhiį¹ kākassa nāsaya; Disperse the trove of the crow!

Kākaį¹ sokāya randhehi, Subject the crow to sorrow,

macche sokā pamocayaā€™. and free the fish from sorrow!ā€™

Saha kate saccavare, As this excellent truth was declared,

pajjunno abhigajjiya; Pajjuna thundered forth.

Thalaį¹ ninnaƱca pÅ«rento, In an instant the rain poured down,

khaį¹‡ena abhivassatha. soaking the uplands and valleys.

EvarÅ«paį¹ saccavaraį¹, Having made such supreme effort

katvā vÄ«riyamuttamaį¹; for this excellent truth,

Vassāpesiį¹ mahāmeghaį¹, I made the great cloud pour down,

saccatejabalassito; relying on the force of the power of truth.

Saccena me samo natthi, There is no-one to equal my truthfulness:

esā me saccapāramÄ«ā€ti. this is my perfection of truth.ā€

Maccharājacariyaį¹ dasamaį¹.
