Yamakavagga Chapter of Pairs 1. Pairs

Cakkhupālattheravatthu

Manopubbaṅgamā dhammā, All things are preceded by the mind, Intention shapes experiences;

manoseṭṭhā manomayā; surpassed by the mind, created by the mind. intention is first, they’re made by intention.

Manasā ce paduṭṭhena, If one speaks or acts If with corrupt intent

bhāsati vā karoti vā; with a corrupted mind, you speak or act,

Tato naṁ dukkhamanveti, Then suffering follows, suffering follows you,

cakkaṁva vahato padaṁ. As a track follows a wheel. like a wheel, the ox’s foot.

Maṭṭhakuṇḍalīvatthu

Manasā ce pasannena, If one speaks or acts If with pure intent

bhāsati vā karoti vā; with a pure mind, you speak or act,

Tato naṁ sukhamanveti, Then happiness follows, happiness follows you

chāyāva anapāyinī. As a shadow that never leaves. like a shadow that never leaves.

Tissattheravatthu

Akkocchi maṁ avadhi maṁ, “They abused me, they hurt me, “They abused me, they hit me!

ajini maṁ ahāsi me; they defeated me, they robbed me!” They beat me, they robbed me!”

Ye ca taṁ upanayhanti, For those who hold on to this For those who bear such a grudge,

veraṁ tesaṁ na sammati. hostility is never replaced by peace. hatred is never laid to rest.

Ye ca taṁ nupanayhanti, For those who do not hold on to this For those who bear no such grudge,

veraṁ tesūpasammati. hostility is replaced by peace. hatred is laid to rest.

Kāḷayakkhinīvatthu

Na hi verena verāni, Hostility is never pacified For never is hatred

sammantīdha kudācanaṁ; by means of hostility. laid to rest by hate,

Averena ca sammanti, Only by means of non-hostility is it pacified. it’s laid to rest by love:

esa dhammo sanantano. This is an eternal truth. this is an ancient teaching.

Kosambakavatthu

Pare ca na vijānanti, Others do not know When others do not understand,

mayamettha yamāmase; that we must be restrained. let us, who do understand this,

Ye ca tattha vijānanti, The wise ones who know this restrain ourselves in this regard;

tato sammanti medhagā. attain peace. for that is how conflicts are laid to rest.

Mahākāḷattheravatthu

Subhānupassiṁ viharantaṁ, If one focuses on beauty, Those who contemplate the beautiful,

indriyesu asaṁvutaṁ; lacks sense-restraint, their faculties unrestrained,

Bhojanamhi cāmattaññuṁ, does not know the right amount when eating, immoderate in eating,

kusītaṁ hīnavīriyaṁ; is lazy, and lacks energy, lazy, lacking energy:

Taṁ ve pasahati māro, Māra subdues such a person Māra strikes them down

vāto rukkhaṁva dubbalaṁ. just as the wind subdues a weak tree. like the wind, a feeble tree.

Asubhānupassiṁ viharantaṁ, If one does not focus on beauty, Those who contemplate the ugly,

Indriyesu susaṁvutaṁ; has good sense-restraint, their faculties well-restrained,

Bhojanamhi ca mattaññuṁ, knows the right amount when eating, eating in moderation,

Saddhaṁ āraddhavīriyaṁ; has faith, and has persistent energy, faithful and energetic:

Taṁ ve nappasahati māro, Māra does not subdue such a person Māra cannot strike them down,

Vāto selaṁva pabbataṁ. just as the wind does not subdue a stone mountain. like the wind, a rocky mountain.

Devadattavatthu

Anikkasāvo kāsāvaṁ, An impure person One who, not free of stains themselves,

yo vatthaṁ paridahissati; who dons a monastic robe would wear the robe stained in ocher,

Apeto damasaccena, without true self-control bereft of self-control and of truth:

na so kāsāvamarahati. is not worthy of the monastic robe. they are not worthy of the ocher robe.

Yo ca vantakasāvassa, One who has expelled all impurity, One who’s purged all their stains,

sīlesu susamāhito; is focused on moral conduct, steady in ethics,

Upeto damasaccena, and is committed to true self-control possessed of self-control and of truth,

sa ve kāsāvamarahati. is worthy of the monastic robe. they are truly worthy of the ocher robe.

Sāriputtattheravatthu

Asāre sāramatino, One who thinks the non-essential is essential Thinking the inessential is essential,

sāre cāsāradassino; and who sees the essential as non-essential seeing the essential as inessential;

Te sāraṁ nādhigacchanti, does not arrive at the essence; they don’t realize the essential,

micchāsaṅkappagocarā. their conduct is based on incorrect attitudes. for wrong thoughts are their habitat.

Sārañca sārato ñatvā, One who knows the essential as essential Having known the essential as essential,

asārañca asārato; and the non-essential as non-essential and the inessential as inessential;

Te sāraṁ adhigacchanti, arrives at the essence; they realize the essential,

sammāsaṅkappagocarā. their conduct is based on correct attitudes. for right thoughts are their habitat.

Nandattheravatthu

Yathā agāraṁ ducchannaṁ, Just as rain penetrates Just as rain seeps into

vuṭṭhī samativijjhati; a poorly sealed house, a poorly roofed house,

Evaṁ abhāvitaṁ cittaṁ, in the same way, passion penetrates lust seeps into

rāgo samativijjhati. an undeveloped mind. an undeveloped mind.

Yathā agāraṁ suchannaṁ, Just as rain does not penetrate Just as rain doesn’t seep into

vuṭṭhī na samativijjhati; a well-sealed house, a well roofed house,

Evaṁ subhāvitaṁ cittaṁ, in the same way, passion does not penetrate lust doesn’t seep into

rāgo na samativijjhati. a well-developed mind. a well developed mind.

Cundasūkarikavatthu

Idha socati pecca socati, One sorrows here, one sorrows afterwards, Here they grieve, hereafter they grieve,

Pāpakārī ubhayattha socati; an evildoer sorrows both times. an evildoer grieves in both places.

So socati so vihaññati, One sorrows and agonizes They grieve and fret,

Disvā kammakiliṭṭhamattano. after seeing one's own defiled actions. seeing their own corrupt deeds.

Dhammikaupāsakavatthu

Idha modati pecca modati, One rejoices here, one rejoices afterwards, Here they rejoice, hereafter they rejoice,

Katapuñño ubhayattha modati; one who has made merit rejoices both times. one who does good rejoices in both places.

So modati so pamodati, One rejoices and exults They rejoice and celebrate,

Disvā kammavisuddhimattano. after seeing one's own pure actions. seeing their own pure deeds.

Devadattavatthu

Idha tappati pecca tappati, Tormented here, tormented afterwards, Here they’re tormented, hereafter they’re tormented,

Pāpakārī ubhayattha tappati; an evildoer is tormented both times. an evildoer is tormented in both places.

“Pāpaṁ me katan”ti tappati, One is tormented by the thought “I have done evil,” They’re tormented thinking of bad things they’ve done;

Bhiyyo tappati duggatiṁ gato. And one is tormented even more when one has arrived at a bad destiny. when gone to a bad place, they’re tormented all the more.

Sumanadevīvatthu

Idha nandati pecca nandati, One delights here, one delights afterwards, Here they delight, hereafter they delight,

Katapuñño ubhayattha nandati; one who has made merit delights both times. one who does good delights in both places.

“Puññaṁ me katan”ti nandati, One is delighted by the thought “I have made merit,” They delight thinking of good things they’ve done;

Bhiyyo nandati suggatiṁ gato. And one delights even more when one has arrived at a good destiny. when gone to a good place, they delight all the more.

Dvesahāyakabhikkhuvatthu

Bahumpi ce saṁhita bhāsamāno, A negligent person who says much that is beneficial Much though they may recite scripture,

Na takkaro hoti naro pamatto; but does not act accordingly if a negligent person does not apply them,

Gopova gāvo gaṇayaṁ paresaṁ, is like a cowherd who counts other people's cows, then, like a cowherd who counts the cattle of others,

Na bhāgavā sāmaññassa hoti. and is not part of the contemplative life. they miss out on the blessings of the ascetic life.

Appampi ce saṁhita bhāsamāno, Even if they say little that is beneficial, Little though they may recite scripture,

Dhammassa hoti anudhammacārī; one who lives according to the Dhamma, if they live in line with the teachings,

Rāgañca dosañca pahāya mohaṁ, having abandoned passion, hatred, and delusion, having given up greed, hate, and delusion,

Sammappajāno suvimuttacitto; with accurate understanding and a well-liberated mind, with deep understanding and heart well freed,

Anupādiyāno idha vā huraṁ vā, not grasping either here or beyond, not grasping to this world or the next,

Sa bhāgavā sāmaññassa hoti. is part of the contemplative life. they share in the blessings of the ascetic life.
