Cittavagga Chapter on Mind 3. The Mind

Meghiyattheravatthu

Phandanaṁ capalaṁ cittaṁ, Unstable and unsteady is the mind, The mind quivers and shakes,

dūrakkhaṁ dunnivārayaṁ; difficult to protect and restrain. hard to guard, hard to curb.

Ujuṁ karoti medhāvī, The wise straighten it, The discerning straighten it out,

usukārova tejanaṁ. like a fletcher straightens an arrow. like a fletcher straightens an arrow.

Vārijova thale khitto, Like a fish pulled from its home Like a fish pulled from the sea

okamokataubbhato; and thrown on dry land, and cast upon the shore,

Pariphandatidaṁ cittaṁ, the mind thrashes about, this mind flounders about,

māradheyyaṁ pahātave. struggling to escape Māra's realm. trying to throw off Māra’s dominion.

Aññatarabhikkhuvatthu

Dunniggahassa lahuno, The mind is fast-moving and hard to subdue, Hard to hold back, flighty,

yatthakāmanipātino; landing wherever it wishes; alighting where it will;

Cittassa damatho sādhu, it is good to train it—it’s good to tame the mind;

cittaṁ dantaṁ sukhāvahaṁ. a trained mind brings happiness. a tamed mind leads to bliss.

Aññataraukkaṇṭhitabhikkhuvatthu

Sududdasaṁ sunipuṇaṁ, The mind is very subtle and hard to see, So hard to see, so subtle,

yatthakāmanipātinaṁ; landing wherever it wishes; alighting where it will;

Cittaṁ rakkhetha medhāvī, the wise protect it—the discerning protect the mind,

cittaṁ guttaṁ sukhāvahaṁ. a guarded mind brings happiness. a guarded mind leads to bliss.

Saṅgharakkhitabhāgineyyattheravatthu

Dūraṅgamaṁ ekacaraṁ, The mind travels far, wanders alone, The mind travels far, wandering alone;

asarīraṁ guhāsayaṁ; incorporeal, self-sheltered; incorporeal, it lies hidden in the heart.

Ye cittaṁ saṁyamissanti, those who restrain it Those who will restrain the mind

mokkhanti mārabandhanā. will be freed from Māra's bonds. are freed from Māra’s bonds.

Cittahatthattheravatthu

Anavaṭṭhitacittassa, For one whose mind is unsettled, Those of unsteady mind,

saddhammaṁ avijānato; who does not understand the true Dhamma, who don’t understand the true teaching,

Pariplavapasādassa, and whose clarity is disturbed, and whose confidence wavers,

paññā na paripūrati. wisdom does not become complete. do not perfect their wisdom.

Anavassutacittassa, One whose mind is free from influences, One whose mind is not festering,

ananvāhatacetaso; whose mind is unafflicted, whose heart is undamaged,

Puññapāpapahīnassa, who has abandoned both merit and evil, and is alert who’s given up right and wrong,

natthi jāgarato bhayaṁ. has no fear. alert, has nothing to fear.

Pañcasatabhikkhuvatthu

Kumbhūpamaṁ kāyamimaṁ viditvā, Having understood that this body is like a clay pot, Knowing this body breaks like a pot,

Nagarūpamaṁ cittamidaṁ ṭhapetvā; having fortified the mind like a city, and fortifying the mind like a citadel,

Yodhetha māraṁ paññāvudhena, combat Māra using wisdom as one's weapon, attack Māra with the sword of wisdom,

Jitañca rakkhe anivesano siyā. and protect the victory—you can be free of any abode. guard your conquest, and never settle.

Pūtigattatissattheravatthu

Aciraṁ vatayaṁ kāyo, Before long, this body All too soon this body

pathaviṁ adhisessati; will lie on the ground will lie upon the earth,

Chuddho apetaviññāṇo, discarded and devoid of consciousness bereft of consciousness,

niratthaṁva kaliṅgaraṁ. like a useless log. tossed aside like a worthless log.

Nandagopālakavatthu

Diso disaṁ yaṁ taṁ kayirā, Compared to what might be done by an enemy to an enemy A wrongly directed mind

verī vā pana verinaṁ; or one hostile person to another, would do you more harm

Micchāpaṇihitaṁ cittaṁ, a wrongly directed mind than a hater to the hated,

pāpiyo naṁ tato kare. can cause even more harm than that. or an enemy to their foe.

Soreyyavatthu

Na taṁ mātā pitā kayirā, Compared to what might be done by a mother or a father A rightly directed mind

aññe vāpi ca ñātakā; or any other relative, would do you more good

Sammāpaṇihitaṁ cittaṁ, a rightly directed mind than your mother or father

seyyaso naṁ tato kare. can bring even more benefit than that. or any other relative.
