Paṇḍitavagga Chapter on the Wise 6. The Astute
Rādhattheravatthu
Nidhīnaṁva pavattāraṁ, Like a person who leads you to hidden treasure: Regard one who sees your faults
yaṁ passe vajjadassinaṁ; this is how to see a person who points out your faults. as a guide to a hidden treasure.
Niggayhavādiṁ medhāviṁ, A wise person who tells you what you need to subdue Stay close to one so wise and astute
tādisaṁ paṇḍitaṁ bhaje; is the kind of person you should associate with. who corrects you when you need it.
Tādisaṁ bhajamānassa, Associating with that kind of person Sticking close to such an impartial person,
seyyo hoti na pāpiyo. is always for the better and never for the worse. things get better, not worse.
Assajipunabbasukavatthu
Ovadeyyānusāseyya, A person might advise you, instruct you, Advise and instruct;
asabbhā ca nivāraye; and keep you away from what is not good; curb wickedness:
Satañhi so piyo hoti, They are liked by those who are good, for you shall be loved by the good,
asataṁ hoti appiyo. and not liked by those who are not good. and disliked by the bad.
Channattheravatthu
Na bhaje pāpake mitte, Do not associate with evil friends, Don’t mix with bad friends,
na bhaje purisādhame; do not associate with lowly people; nor with the worst of men.
Bhajetha mitte kalyāṇe, associate with good spiritual friends Mix with spiritual friends,
bhajetha purisuttame. and with the highest of people. and with the best of men.
Mahākappinattheravatthu
Dhammapīti sukhaṁ seti, When one enjoys the Dhamma, then one sleeps happily, Through joy in the teaching you sleep at ease,
vippasannena cetasā; with a clear mind; with clear and confident heart.
Ariyappavedite dhamme, a wise person always appreciates An astute person always delights in the teaching
sadā ramati paṇḍito. the Dhamma proclaimed by the noble ones. proclaimed by the Noble One.
Paṇḍitasāmaṇeravatthu
Udakañhi nayanti nettikā, Irrigators guide water, Irrigators guide water,
Usukārā namayanti tejanaṁ; fletchers shape arrows, fletchers straighten arrows,
Dāruṁ namayanti tacchakā, carpenters shape wood, carpenters carve timber,
Attānaṁ damayanti paṇḍitā. the wise train themselves. the astute tame themselves.
Lakuṇḍakabhaddiyattheravatthu
Selo yathā ekaghano, Just as the wind As the wind cannot stir
vātena na samīrati; does not move solid stone, a solid mass of rock,
Evaṁ nindāpasaṁsāsu, praise and criticism so too blame and praise
na samiñjanti paṇḍitā. do not disturb the wise. do not affect the wise.
Kāṇamātāvatthu
Yathāpi rahado gambhīro, Like a deep lake, Like a deep lake,
vippasanno anāvilo; clear and undisturbed, clear and unclouded,
Evaṁ dhammāni sutvāna, when the wise hear the Dhamma so clear are the astute
vippasīdanti paṇḍitā. they attain clarity. when they hear the teachings.
Pañcasatabhikkhuvatthu
Sabbattha ve sappurisā cajanti, Good people let go of everything; True persons give up everything,
Na kāmakāmā lapayanti santo; the peaceful do not prattle about sensuality. they don’t cajole for the things they desire.
Sukhena phuṭṭhā atha vā dukhena, Whether they are touched by pleasure or pain, Though touched by sadness or happiness,
Na uccāvacaṁ paṇḍitā dassayanti. neither elation nor depression can be seen in the wise. the astute appear neither depressed nor elated.
Dhammikattheravatthu
Na attahetu na parassa hetu, Whether because of oneself or because of another, Never wish for success by unjust means,
Na puttamicche na dhanaṁ na raṭṭhaṁ; one should not wish to obtain children, wealth, lordship, or personal success for your own sake or that of another,
Na iccheyya adhammena samiddhimattano, in ways contrary to Dhamma. desiring children, wealth, or nation;
Sa sīlavā paññavā dhammiko siyā. Instead let one be virtuous, wise, and in accord with Dhamma. rather, be virtuous, wise, and just.
Dhammassavanattheravatthu
Appakā te manussesu, Few are the humans Few are those among humans
ye janā pāragāmino; who go beyond. who cross to the far shore.
Athāyaṁ itarā pajā, Most people The rest just run around
tīramevānudhāvati. only run around on the shore. on the near shore.
Ye ca kho sammadakkhāte, Those who act in accordance When the teaching is well explained,
dhamme dhammānuvattino; with the well-explained Dhamma those who practice accordingly
Te janā pāramessanti, will go beyond the mortal realm will cross over
maccudheyyaṁ suduttaraṁ. so difficult to escape. Death’s dominion so hard to pass.
Pañcasataāgantukabhikkhuvatthu
Kaṇhaṁ dhammaṁ vippahāya, Abandon dark things and develop bright things; Rid of dark qualities,
Sukkaṁ bhāvetha paṇḍito; a wise person an astute person should develop the bright.
Okā anokamāgamma, leaves home for homelessness Leaving home behind
Viveke yattha dūramaṁ. and lives in seclusion, where it is difficult to find satisfaction. for the seclusion so hard to enjoy,
Tatrābhiratimiccheyya, One who has nothing could hope to find satisfaction there, find delight there,
hitvā kāme akiñcano; after abandoning sensuality; having left behind sensual pleasures.
Pariyodapeyya attānaṁ, a wise person would cleanse themselves With no possessions, an astute person
cittaklesehi paṇḍito. of mental defilements. would cleanse themselves of mental corruptions.
Yesaṁ sambodhiyaṅgesu, Those who have developed the factors of awakening Those whose minds are rightly developed
sammā cittaṁ subhāvitaṁ; correctly and thoroughly, in the awakening factors;
Ādānapaṭinissagge, who have taken up relinquishment, who, letting go of attachments,
anupādāya ye ratā; who appreciate non-grasping, delight in not grasping:
Khīṇāsavā jutimanto, and have eliminated their corruptions—with defilements ended, brilliant,
te loke parinibbutā. such radiant beings have attained Nibbāna in this world. they are quenched in this world.
