Arahantavagga Chapter on Arahants 7. The Perfected Ones
Jīvakapañhavatthu
Gataddhino visokassa, In one who has completed the journey, is free of sorrow, At journey’s end, rid of sorrow;
vippamuttassa sabbadhi; has been completely liberated in every way, everywhere free,
Sabbaganthappahīnassa, and has abandoned all ties, all ties given up,
pariḷāho na vijjati. no fever can be found. no fever is found in them.
Mahākassapattheravatthu
Uyyuñjanti satīmanto, Mindfully they strive upwards, The mindful apply themselves;
na nikete ramanti te; they do not appreciate settling; they delight in no abode.
Haṁsāva pallalaṁ hitvā, Like swans leaving behind a lake, Like a swan gone from the marsh,
okamokaṁ jahanti te. they abandon home after home. they leave home after home behind.
Belaṭṭhasīsattheravatthu
Yesaṁ sannicayo natthi, Those who have no stockpile, Those with nothing stored up,
ye pariññātabhojanā; who have completely understood eating, who have understood their food,
Suññato animitto ca, whose domain is emptiness whose domain is the liberation
vimokkho yesaṁ gocaro; and objectless liberation—of the signless and the empty:
Ākāseva sakuntānaṁ, like birds in the sky, their path is hard to trace,
gati tesaṁ durannayā. their movement is hard to follow. like birds in the sky.
Anuruddhattheravatthu
Yassāsavā parikkhīṇā, One who has completely eliminated their influences One whose defilements have ended;
āhāre ca anissito; and is not dependent on consumption, who’s not attached to food;
Suññato animitto ca, whose domain is emptiness whose domain is the liberation
vimokkho yassa gocaro; and objectless liberation—of the signless and the empty:
Ākāseva sakuntānaṁ, like birds in the sky, their track is hard to trace,
padaṁ tassa durannayaṁ. their path is hard to follow. like birds in the sky.
Mahākaccāyanattheravatthu
Yassindriyāni samathaṅgatāni, One whose faculties are peaceful, Whose faculties have become serene,
Assā yathā sārathinā sudantā; like a horse well-trained by a charioteer, like horses tamed by a charioteer,
Pahīnamānassa anāsavassa, who has abandoned conceit and is free of influences, who has abandoned conceit and defilements;
Devāpi tassa pihayanti tādino. is envied even by the angels. the unaffected one is envied by even the gods.
Sāriputtattheravatthu
Pathavisamo no virujjhati, One who, like the earth, opposes nothing, Undisturbed like the earth,
Indakhilupamo tādi subbato; who is as stable as a pillar, practicing well, true to their vows, steady as a boundary-post,
Rahadova apetakaddamo, who is like a lake with no trace of mud—like a lake clear of mud;
Saṁsārā na bhavanti tādino. such beings are not reborn in saṁsāra. such a one does not transmigrate.
Kosambivāsitissattherasāmaṇeravatthu
Santaṁ tassa manaṁ hoti, One whose mind is peaceful, Their mind is peaceful,
santā vācā ca kamma ca; whose speech and actions are peaceful, peaceful are their speech and deeds.
Sammadaññāvimuttassa, and who is liberated through right knowledge—Such a one is at peace,
upasantassa tādino. such a person is at peace. rightly freed through enlightenment.
Sāriputtattheravatthu
Assaddho akataññū ca, One who is beyond faith, knows the Unmade, Lacking faith, a house-breaker,
sandhicchedo ca yo naro; has severed all ties, one who acknowledges nothing,
Hatāvakāso vantāso, has expelled defilement, and has rejected longing—purged of hope, they’ve wasted their chance:
sa ve uttamaporiso. this is truly the best person. that is indeed the supreme person!
Khadiravaniyarevatattheravatthu
Gāme vā yadi vāraññe, Whether it is in a village or in the wilderness, Whether in village or wilderness,
Ninne vā yadi vā thale; in lowlands or highlands—in a valley or the uplands,
Yattha arahanto viharanti, any place where an arahant lives wherever the perfected ones live
Taṁ bhūmirāmaṇeyyakaṁ. is a place worth appreciating. is a delightful place.
Aññataraitthivatthu
Ramaṇīyāni araññāni, It is possible to appreciate the wilderness areas Delightful are the wildernesses
yattha na ramatī jano; that most people do not appreciate; where no people delight.
Vītarāgā ramissanti, one who is free of passion will appreciate them, Those free of greed will delight there,
na te kāmagavesino. since they do not seek sensuality. not those who seek sensual pleasures.
