Pāpavagga Chapter of Evil 9. Wickedness
Cūḷekasāṭakabrāhmaṇavatthu
Abhittharetha kalyāṇe, Rush to do good, Rush to do good,
pāpā cittaṁ nivāraye; keep the mind back from evil. shield your mind from evil;
Dandhañhi karoto puññaṁ, One who is slow to do good for when you’re slow to do good,
pāpasmiṁ ramatī mano. appreciates evil. your thoughts delight in wickedness.
Seyyasakattheravatthu
Pāpañce puriso kayirā, If a person does something evil If you do something bad,
Na naṁ kayirā punappunaṁ; they should not do it again. don’t do it again and again,
Na tamhi chandaṁ kayirātha, Take no interest in it; don’t set your heart on it,
Dukkho pāpassa uccayo. the accumulation of evil is suffering. for piling up evil is suffering.
Lājadevadhītāvatthu
Puññañce puriso kayirā, If a person does something good If you do something good,
kayirā naṁ punappunaṁ; they should do it again. do it again and again,
Tamhi chandaṁ kayirātha, Take an interest in it; set your heart on it,
sukho puññassa uccayo. the accumulation of merit is pleasant. for piling up goodness is joyful.
Anāthapiṇḍikaseṭṭhivatthu
Pāpopi passati bhadraṁ, One sees evil as good Even the wicked see good things,
Yāva pāpaṁ na paccati; as long as its results have yet to fully manifest; so long as their wickedness has not ripened.
Yadā ca paccati pāpaṁ, but when the results of that evil fully manifest, But as soon as that wickedness ripens,
Atha pāpo pāpāni passati. then one sees evil as evil. then the wicked see wicked things.
Bhadropi passati pāpaṁ, One sees good as evil Even the good see wicked things,
Yāva bhadraṁ na paccati; as long as its results have yet to fully manifest; so long as their goodness has not ripened.
Yadā ca paccati bhadraṁ, but when the results of that good fully manifest, But as soon as that goodness ripens,
Atha bhadro bhadrāni passati. then one sees good as good. then the good see good things.
Asaññataparikkhāravatthu
Māvamaññetha pāpassa, Do not disregard evil, Think not lightly of evil,
na mantaṁ āgamissati; thinking it will have no consequence. that it won’t come back to you.
Udabindunipātena, Just as falling drops of water The pot is filled with water
udakumbhopi pūrati; fill up a bucket, falling drop by drop;
Bālo pūrati pāpassa, a fool becomes full of evil the fool is filled with wickedness
thokaṁ thokampi ācinaṁ. collecting it little by little. piled up bit by bit.
Biḷālapādakaseṭṭhivatthu
Māvamaññetha puññassa, Do not disregard merit, Think not lightly of goodness,
na mandaṁ āgamissati; thinking it will have no consequence. that it won’t come back to you.
Udabindunipātena, Just as falling drops of water The pot is filled with water
udakumbhopi pūrati; fill up a bucket, falling drop by drop;
Dhīro pūrati puññassa, a sage becomes full of merit the attentive one is filled with goodness
thokaṁ thokampi ācinaṁ. collecting it little by little. piled up bit by bit.
Mahādhanavāṇijavatthu
Vāṇijova bhayaṁ maggaṁ, Just as a wealthy merchant with little protection Avoid wickedness,
appasattho mahaddhano; avoids a dangerous road, as a merchant with rich cargo and small escort
Visaṁ jīvitukāmova, just as one who wishes to live avoids poison, would avoid a dangerous road,
pāpāni parivajjaye. one should avoid evil. or one who loves life would avoid drinking poison.
Kukkuṭamittanesādavatthu
Pāṇimhi ce vaṇo nāssa, If a hand is unwounded You can carry poison in your hand
hareyya pāṇinā visaṁ; then it can take away poison; if it has no wound,
Nābbaṇaṁ visamanveti, poison cannot affect one who has no wound. for poison does not infect without a wound;
natthi pāpaṁ akubbato. No evil comes to one who does none. nothing bad happens unless you do bad.
Kokasunakhaluddakavatthu
Yo appaduṭṭhassa narassa dussati, If one abuses Whoever wrongs a man who has done no wrong,
Suddhassa posassa anaṅgaṇassa; a faultless, pure, and flawless person, a pure man who has not a blemish,
Tameva bālaṁ pacceti pāpaṁ, then evil will come back to that fool, the evil backfires on the fool,
Sukhumo rajo paṭivātaṁva khitto. like fine dust thrown against the wind. like fine dust thrown upwind.
Maṇikārakulūpakatissattheravatthu
Gabbhameke uppajjanti, Some people arise in wombs; Some are born in a womb;
nirayaṁ pāpakammino; evildoers, in hell; evil-doers go to hell;
Saggaṁ sugatino yanti, those on the right course go to heaven; the virtuous go to heaven;
parinibbanti anāsavā. the uncorrupted attain Nibbāna. the undefiled are fully extinguished.
Tayojanavatthu
Na antalikkhe na samuddamajjhe, Not by going into the sky, or into the ocean, Not in midair, nor mid-ocean,
Na pabbatānaṁ vivaraṁ pavissa; or into a mountain cleft, nor hiding in a mountain cleft;
Na vijjatī so jagatippadeso, or anywhere in the world, you’ll find no place in the world
Yatthaṭṭhito mucceyya pāpakammā. can one find a place where one is free from one’s evil deeds. to escape your wicked deeds.
Suppabuddhasakyavatthu
Na antalikkhe na samuddamajjhe, Not by going into the sky, or into the ocean, Not in midair, nor mid-ocean,
Na pabbatānaṁ vivaraṁ pavissa; or into a mountain cleft, nor hiding in a mountain cleft;
Na vijjatī so jagatippadeso, or anywhere in the world, you’ll find no place in the world
Yatthaṭṭhitaṁ nappasaheyya maccu. can one find a place where one is not caught by death. where you won’t be vanquished by death.
