Daṇḍavagga Chapter on Violence 10. The Rod
Chabbaggiyabhikkhuvatthu
Sabbe tasanti daṇḍassa, Everyone dreads violence, All tremble at the rod,
sabbe bhāyanti maccuno; everyone fears death; all fear death.
Attānaṁ upamaṁ katvā, recognizing that you are similar, Treating others like oneself,
na haneyya na ghātaye. do not harm or cause others to harm. neither kill nor incite to kill.
Chabbaggiyavatthu
Sabbe tasanti daṇḍassa, Everyone dreads violence, All tremble at the rod,
sabbesaṁ jīvitaṁ piyaṁ; everyone likes to live; all love life.
Attānaṁ upamaṁ katvā, recognizing that you are similar, Treating others like oneself,
na haneyya na ghātaye. do not harm or cause others to harm. neither kill nor incite to kill.
Sambahulakumārakavatthu
Sukhakāmāni bhūtāni, Beings want pleasure; Creatures love happiness,
yo daṇḍena vihiṁsati; if one harms them with violence so if you harm them with a stick
Attano sukhamesāno, while seeking pleasure for oneself, in search of your own happiness,
pecca so na labhate sukhaṁ. one will find no pleasure in the future. after death you won’t find happiness.
Sukhakāmāni bhūtāni, Beings want pleasure; Creatures love happiness,
yo daṇḍena na hiṁsati; if one does not harm them with violence so if you don’t harm them with a stick
Attano sukhamesāno, while seeking pleasure for oneself, in search of your own happiness,
pecca so labhate sukhaṁ. one will find pleasure in the future. after death you will find happiness.
Koṇḍadhānattheravatthu
Māvoca pharusaṁ kañci, Say no harsh words to anyone; Don’t speak harshly,
vuttā paṭivadeyyu taṁ; they might respond in kind. they may speak harshly back.
Dukkhā hi sārambhakathā, Hostile speech is painful, For aggressive speech is painful,
paṭidaṇḍā phuseyyu taṁ. and it may provoke a violent response. and the rod may spring back on you.
Sace neresi attānaṁ, If you are non-reactive, If you still yourself
kaṁso upahato yathā; like a broken bell, like a broken gong,
Esa pattosi nibbānaṁ, then you have reached Nibbāna you reach extinguishment
sārambho te na vijjati. and no conflict can be found in you. and know no conflict.
Uposathikaitthīnaṁvatthu
Yathā daṇḍena gopālo, Just as a cowherd, using a stick, As a cowherd drives the cows
gāvo pājeti gocaraṁ; herds cattle through a pasture, to pasture with the rod,
Evaṁ jarā ca maccu ca, in the same way, decrepitude and death so too old age and death
āyuṁ pājenti pāṇinaṁ. herd the living through life. drive life from living beings.
Ajagarapetavatthu
Atha pāpāni kammāni, Performing evil actions, The fool does not understand
karaṁ bālo na bujjhati; a fool does not attain awakening. the evil that they do.
Sehi kammehi dummedho, The unwise person is tormented by those actions But because of those deeds, that simpleton
aggidaḍḍhova tappati. as if burned by fire. is tormented as if burnt by fire.
Mahāmoggallānattheravatthu
Yo daṇḍena adaṇḍesu, One who is violent towards the nonviolent, One who violently attacks
appaduṭṭhesu dussati; one who harms the harmless, the peaceful and the innocent
Dasannamaññataraṁ ṭhānaṁ, will soon experience swiftly falls
khippameva nigacchati. one of ten consequences: to one of ten bad states:
Vedanaṁ pharusaṁ jāniṁ, Harsh sensations, deprivation, harsh pain; loss;
sarīrassa va bhedanaṁ; physical injury, the breakup of the body;
Garukaṁ vāpi ābādhaṁ, severe illness, serious illness;
cittakkhepaṁ va pāpuṇe. mental derangement, mental distress;
Rājato vā upasaggaṁ, legal trouble, hazards from rulers;
Abbhakkhānaṁ va dāruṇaṁ; severe accusations, vicious slander;
Parikkhayaṁ va ñātīnaṁ, loss of relatives, loss of kin;
Bhogānaṁ va pabhaṅguraṁ. dissipation of wealth, destruction of wealth;
Atha vāssa agārāni, or their house or else their home
aggi ḍahati pāvako; catching on fire. is consumed by fire.
Kāyassa bhedā duppañño, Then, when the fool is separated from their body, When their body breaks up, that witless person
nirayaṁ sopapajjati. they will reappear in hell. is reborn in hell.
Bahubhaṇḍikabhikkhuvatthu
Na naggacariyā na jaṭā na paṅkā, Nudity, tangled hair, filth, Not nakedness, nor matted hair, nor mud,
Nānāsakā thaṇḍilasāyikā vā; fasting, sleeping on the ground, nor fasting, nor lying on bare ground,
Rajojallaṁ ukkuṭikappadhānaṁ, squatting in the mud - nor wearing dust and dirt, or squatting on the heels,
Sodhenti maccaṁ avitiṇṇakaṅkhaṁ. these cannot purify a mortal who has not yet gone beyond doubt. will cleanse a mortal not free of doubt.
Santatimahāmattavatthu
Alaṅkato cepi samaṁ careyya, However, if one who wears adornments is well-behaved, Dressed up they may be, but if they live well—
Santo danto niyato brahmacārī; peaceful, restrained, committed to spiritual practice, peaceful, tamed, committed to the spiritual path,
Sabbesu bhūtesu nidhāya daṇḍaṁ, and has renounced violence towards all beings, having laid aside violence towards all creatures—
So brāhmaṇo so samaṇo sa bhikkhu. then they are a saint, a contemplative, a monk. they are a brahmin, an ascetic, a mendicant.
Pilotikatissattheravatthu
Hirīnisedho puriso, What person can be found in this world Can a person constrained by conscience
koci lokasmi vijjati; that is restrained by conscience? be found in the world?
Yo niddaṁ apabodheti, Who wakes up when criticized, Who shies away from blame,
asso bhadro kasāmiva. like a fine horse struck by a whip? like a fine horse from the whip?
Asso yathā bhadro kasāniviṭṭho, Like a fine horse struck by a whip, Like a fine horse under the whip,
Ātāpino saṁvegino bhavātha; be ardent and filled with urgency. be keen and full of urgency.
Saddhāya sīlena ca vīriyena ca, By means of faith, virtue, determination, With faith, ethics, and energy,
Samādhinā dhammavinicchayena ca; concentration, investigation of Dhamma, immersion, and investigation of principles,
Sampannavijjācaraṇā patissatā, perfect knowledge, perfect conduct, and thorough awareness, accomplished in knowledge and conduct, mindful,
Jahissatha dukkhamidaṁ anappakaṁ. abandon this immense suffering. give up this vast suffering.
Sukhasāmaṇeravatthu
Udakañhi nayanti nettikā, Irrigators guide water, While irrigators guide water,
Usukārā namayanti tejanaṁ; fletchers shape arrows, fletchers shape arrows,
Dāruṁ namayanti tacchakā, carpenters shape wood, and carpenters carve timber—
Attānaṁ damayanti subbatā. those who practice well train themselves. those true to their vows tame themselves.
