Jarāvagga Chapter on Decay 11. Old Age
Visākhāyasahāyikānaṁvatthu
Ko nu hāso kimānando, Who can laugh, who can delight, What is joy, what is laughter,
niccaṁ pajjalite sati; since this is always on fire? when the flames are ever burning?
Andhakārena onaddhā, Obscured by darkness, Shrouded by darkness,
padīpaṁ na gavesatha. you do not search for light. would you not seek a light?
Sirimāvatthu
Passa cittakataṁ bimbaṁ, See that the mind has been made a puppet, See this fancy puppet,
arukāyaṁ samussitaṁ; damaged with arrogance, a body built of sores,
Āturaṁ bahusaṅkappaṁ, afflicted with excessive thought, diseased, obsessed over,
yassa natthi dhuvaṁ ṭhiti. lacking stability and composure. in which nothing lasts at all.
Uttarātherīvatthu
Parijiṇṇamidaṁ rūpaṁ, This body is decrepit, This body is decrepit and frail,
roganīḷaṁ pabhaṅguraṁ; fragile, a nest of disease, a nest of disease.
Bhijjati pūtisandeho, a putrid heap that falls apart, This foul carcass falls apart,
maraṇantañhi jīvitaṁ. since life ends in death. for life ends in death.
Sambahulaadhimānikabhikkhuvatthu
Yānimāni apatthāni, Set aside These dove-grey bones
alābūneva sārade; like gourds in autumn - are tossed away like
Kāpotakāni aṭṭhīni, when seeing these faded bones, dried gourds in the autumn—
tāni disvāna kā rati. what delight can there be? what joy is there in such a sight?
Janapadakalyāṇīrūpanandātherīvatthu
Aṭṭhīnaṁ nagaraṁ kataṁ, Like a city made of bones, In this city built of bones,
maṁsalohitalepanaṁ; wrapped in meat and blood, plastered with flesh and blood,
Yattha jarā ca maccu ca, a place of decay and death, old age and death are stashed away,
māno makkho ca ohito. conceit and contempt. along with conceit and contempt.
Mallikādevīvatthu
Jīranti ve rājarathā sucittā, Even splendid royal chariots wear out; Fancy chariots of kings wear out,
Atho sarīrampi jaraṁ upeti; so too, this body decays. and even this body gets old.
Satañca dhammo na jaraṁ upeti, But the true Dhamma never decays: But the truth of the good never gets old—
Santo have sabbhi pavedayanti. it is made known by those who are peaceful and virtuous. so the good proclaim to the good.
Lāḷudāyītheravatthu
Appassutāyaṁ puriso, A person who has learned little A person of little learning
balībaddhova jīrati; ages like an ox: ages like an ox—
Maṁsāni tassa vaḍḍhanti, their muscles grow their flesh grows,
paññā tassa na vaḍḍhati. but their wisdom does not. but not their wisdom.
Udānavatthu
Anekajātisaṁsāraṁ, Wandering through many lives, Transmigrating through countless rebirths,
sandhāvissaṁ anibbisaṁ; seeking but not finding I’ve journeyed without reward,
Gahakāraṁ gavesanto, the builder of this house - searching for the house-builder;
dukkhā jāti punappunaṁ. repeatedly experiencing the suffering of birth. painful is birth again and again.
Gahakāraka diṭṭhosi, House-builder, you have been seen! I’ve seen you, house-builder!
puna gehaṁ na kāhasi; You will build no house again. You won’t build a house again!
Sabbā te phāsukā bhaggā, All your rafters are broken, Your rafters are all broken,
gahakūṭaṁ visaṅkhataṁ; the roof-peak dismantled. your roof-peak is demolished.
Visaṅkhāragataṁ cittaṁ, The mind has gone to the unconditioned - My mind, set on demolition,
taṇhānaṁ khayamajjhagā. the elimination of craving has been reached. has reached the end of craving.
Mahādhanaseṭṭhiputtavatthu
Acaritvā brahmacariyaṁ, Those who have neither lived a spiritual life When young they spurned the spiritual path
aladdhā yobbane dhanaṁ; nor acquired wealth during their youth, and failed to earn any wealth.
Jiṇṇakoñcāva jhāyanti, Waste away like old herons Now they languish like old cranes
khīṇamaccheva pallale. by a fishless pond. in a pond bereft of fish.
Acaritvā brahmacariyaṁ, Those who have neither lived a spiritual life When young they spurned the spiritual path
aladdhā yobbane dhanaṁ; nor acquired wealth during their youth, and failed to earn any wealth.
Senti cāpātikhīṇāva, lay around like wasted arrows, Now they lie like spent arrows,
purāṇāni anutthunaṁ. lamenting the past. bemoaning over things past.
Jarāvaggo ekādasamo.
