Buddhavagga Chapter on the Buddha 14. The Buddhas

Māradhītaravatthu

Yassa jitaṁ nāvajīyati, One whose victory does not diminish, He whose victory may not be undone,

Jitaṁ yassa noyāti koci loke; whose victory cannot be removed by anyone in the world, a victory unrivaled in all the world;

Taṁ buddhamanantagocaraṁ, the domain of that Awakened One is infinite - by what track would you trace that Buddha,

Apadaṁ kena padena nessatha. No one can lead that one astray. who leaves no track in his infinite range?

Yassa jālinī visattikā, One who is not entangled or stuck, Of craving, the weaver, the clinger, he has none:

Taṇhā natthi kuhiñci netave; in whom no craving can be found, so where can he be traced?

Taṁ buddhamanantagocaraṁ, the domain of that Awakened One is infinite - By what track would you trace that Buddha,

Apadaṁ kena padena nessatha. No one can lead that one astray. who leaves no track in his infinite range?

Devorohaṇavatthu

Ye jhānapasutā dhīrā, They are steadfast, committed to Jhāna, The attentive intent on absorption,

nekkhammūpasame ratā; appreciate the peacefulness of renunciation, who love the peace of renunciation,

Devāpi tesaṁ pihayanti, and are envied even by the angels - the Buddhas, ever mindful,

sambuddhānaṁ satīmataṁ. those who are mindful and fully Awakened. are envied by even the gods.

Erakapattanāgarājavatthu

Kiccho manussapaṭilābho, It is hard to become a human, It’s hard to gain a human birth;

kicchaṁ maccāna jīvitaṁ; it is hard to live a mortal life, the life of mortals is hard;

Kicchaṁ saddhammassavanaṁ, it is hard to hear the true Dhamma, it’s hard to hear the true teaching;

kiccho buddhānamuppādo. it is hard to encounter an Awakened One. the arising of Buddhas is hard.

Ānandattherapañhavatthu

Sabbapāpassa akaraṇaṁ, Not doing anything evil, Not to do any evil;

kusalassa upasampadā; commitment to the wholesome, to embrace the good;

Sacittapariyodapanaṁ, and cleansing one's own mind - to purify one’s mind:

etaṁ buddhāna sāsanaṁ. this is the teaching of the Awakened Ones. this is the instruction of the Buddhas.

Khantī paramaṁ tapo titikkhā, Endurance is the highest austerity, Patient acceptance is the ultimate fervor.

Nibbānaṁ paramaṁ vadanti buddhā; Nibbāna is the highest, according to those who are Awakened. Extinguishment is the ultimate, say the Buddhas.

Na hi pabbajito parūpaghātī, A renunciant does not harm others, No true renunciate injures another,

Na samaṇo hoti paraṁ viheṭhayanto. a contemplative does not oppress others. nor does an ascetic hurt another.

Anūpavādo anūpaghāto, Not insulting, not harming, Not speaking ill nor doing harm;

Pātimokkhe ca saṁvaro; self-restraint in accordance with the Pātimokkha, restraint in the monastic code;

Mattaññutā ca bhattasmiṁ, Knowing the right amount when eating, moderation in eating;

Pantañca sayanāsanaṁ; sitting and sleeping in a secluded place, staying in remote lodgings;

Adhicitte ca āyogo, and commitment to improving the mind - commitment to the higher mind—

Etaṁ buddhāna sāsanaṁ. this is the teaching of the Awakened Ones. this is the instruction of the Buddhas.

Anabhiratabhikkhuvatthu

Na kahāpaṇavassena, Not even with a rain of money Even if it were raining money,

titti kāmesu vijjati; can one be sated when it comes to sensuality. you’d not be sated in sensual pleasures.

Appassādā dukhā kāmā, There is little gratification in sensuality, it is unsatisfying; An astute person understands that sensual pleasures

iti viññāya paṇḍito. this is what the wise understand. offer little gratification and much suffering.

Api dibbesu kāmesu, Even in heavenly sensuality Thus they find no delight

ratiṁ so nādhigacchati; one cannot find satisfaction. even in celestial pleasures.

Taṇhakkhayarato hoti, But there is satisfaction in the elimination of craving A disciple of the fully awakened Buddha

sammāsambuddhasāvako. for a disciple of the Fully Awakened One. delights in the ending of craving.

Aggidattabrāhmaṇavatthu

Bahuṁ ve saraṇaṁ yanti, They go to many places for refuge - So many go for refuge

pabbatāni vanāni ca; mountains, groves, to mountains and forest groves,

Ārāmarukkhacetyāni, forest shrines - to tree-shrines in tended parks;

manussā bhayatajjitā. people who are struck by fear. those people are driven by fear.

Netaṁ kho saraṇaṁ khemaṁ, But that is not a secure refuge, But such refuge is no sanctuary,

netaṁ saraṇamuttamaṁ; that is not the ultimate refuge; it is no supreme refuge.

Netaṁ saraṇamāgamma, that is not a refuge By going to that refuge,

sabbadukkhā pamuccati. which brings freedom from all suffering. you’re not released from all suffering.

Yo ca buddhañca dhammañca, But one who has gone for refuge One gone for refuge to the Buddha,

saṅghañca saraṇaṁ gato; to the Buddha, Dhamma, and Sangha, to his teaching and to the Saṅgha,

Cattāri ariyasaccāni, and who sees the Four Noble Truths sees the four noble truths

sammappaññāya passati. with correct wisdom - with right understanding:

Dukkhaṁ dukkhasamuppādaṁ, suffering, the origin of suffering, suffering, suffering’s origin,

dukkhassa ca atikkamaṁ; the transcending of suffering, suffering’s transcendence,

Ariyaṁ caṭṭhaṅgikaṁ maggaṁ, and the Noble Eightfold Path and the noble eightfold path

dukkhūpasamagāminaṁ. which leads to the pacification of suffering - that leads to the stilling of suffering.

Etaṁ kho saraṇaṁ khemaṁ, this is a secure refuge, Such refuge is a sanctuary,

etaṁ saraṇamuttamaṁ; this is the ultimate refuge. it is the supreme refuge.

Etaṁ saraṇamāgamma, This is the refuge By going to that refuge,

sabbadukkhā pamuccati. which brings freedom from all suffering. you’re released from all suffering.

Ānandattherapañhavatthu

Dullabho purisājañño, It is hard to find a high-quality person; It’s hard to find a thoroughbred man:

na so sabbattha jāyati; they are not born everywhere. they’re not born just anywhere.

Yattha so jāyati dhīro, Wherever a steadfast person is born, A family where that attentive one is born

taṁ kulaṁ sukhamedhati. their family grows in happiness. prospers in happiness.

Sambahulabhikkhuvatthu

Sukho buddhānamuppādo, Happy is the arising of Awakened Ones, Happy, the arising of Buddhas!

sukhā saddhammadesanā; happy is the teaching of the true Dhamma, Happy, the teaching of Dhamma!

Sukhā saṅghassa sāmaggī, happy is the harmony of the Sangha, Happy is the harmony of the Saṅgha,

samaggānaṁ tapo sukho. happy is the austerity of those on the same Path. and the striving of the harmonious is happy.

Kassapadasabalassasuvaṇṇacetiyavatthu

Pūjārahe pūjayato, One who honors those worthy of honor - When a person venerates the worthy—

buddhe yadi va sāvake; Awakened Ones or their disciples, the Buddha or his disciple,

Papañcasamatikkante, those who have transcended complication who have transcended proliferation,

tiṇṇasokapariddave. and gone beyond sorrow and grief, and have left behind grief and lamentation,

Te tādise pūjayato, who have reached Nibbāna, quenched, fearing nothing from any quarter—

nibbute akutobhaye; and are fearless - the merit of one venerating such as these,

Na sakkā puññaṁ saṅkhātuṁ, it is not possible to calculate the merit cannot be calculated by anyone,

imettamapi kenaci. of one who honors such beings. saying it is just this much.

Buddhavaggo cuddasamo.
