Sukhavagga Chapter on Happiness 15. Happiness
Ñātikalahavūpasamanavatthu
Susukhaṁ vata jīvāma, Oh so happily we live, Let us live so very happily,
verinesu averino; non-hostile amidst the hostile. loving among the hostile.
Verinesu manussesu, Amidst hostile people Among hostile people,
viharāma averino. we live without hostility. let us live with love.
Susukhaṁ vata jīvāma, Oh so happily we live, Let us live so very happily,
āturesu anāturā; unafflicted amidst the afflicted. healthy among the ailing.
Āturesu manussesu, Amidst afflicted people Among ailing people
viharāma anāturā. we live without affliction. let us live healthily.
Susukhaṁ vata jīvāma, Oh so happily we live, Let us live so very happily,
ussukesu anussukā; unpreoccupied amidst the preoccupied. content among the greedy.
Ussukesu manussesu, Amidst preoccupied people Among greedy people,
viharāma anussukā. we live without preoccupation. let us live content.
Māravatthu
Susukhaṁ vata jīvāma, Oh so happily we live, Let us live so very happily,
yesaṁ no natthi kiñcanaṁ; we who have nothing. we who have nothing.
Pītibhakkhā bhavissāma, We will feed on bliss, We shall feed on rapture,
devā ābhassarā yathā. like the radiant angels. like the gods of streaming radiance.
Kosalaraññoparājayavatthu
Jayaṁ veraṁ pasavati, Victory produces hostility; Victory breeds enmity;
dukkhaṁ seti parājito; the defeated sleep uncomfortably. the defeated sleep badly.
Upasanto sukhaṁ seti, The peaceful sleep happily, The peaceful sleep at ease,
hitvā jayaparājayaṁ. having relinquished both victory and defeat. having left victory and defeat behind.
Aññatarakuladārikāvatthu
Natthi rāgasamo aggi, There is no fire like passion, There is no fire like greed,
Natthi dosasamo kali; no distress like aversion, no crime like hate,
Natthi khandhasamā dukkhā, no suffering like the components of being, no suffering like the aggregates,
Natthi santiparaṁ sukhaṁ. no happiness greater than peace. no bliss beyond peace.
Ekaupāsakavatthu
Jighacchāparamā rogā, Hunger is the highest affliction, Hunger is the worst illness,
saṅkhāraparamā dukhā; conditions are the highest suffering; conditions are the worst suffering.
Etaṁ ñatvā yathābhūtaṁ, for one who truly knows this, For one who truly knows this,
nibbānaṁ paramaṁ sukhaṁ. Nibbāna is the highest happiness. extinguishment is the ultimate happiness.
Pasenadikosalavatthu
Ārogyaparamā lābhā, Freedom from illness is the highest acquisition, Health is the ultimate blessing;
Santuṭṭhiparamaṁ dhanaṁ; contentment is the highest wealth, contentment, the ultimate wealth;
Vissāsaparamā ñāti, trust is the highest kin, trust is the ultimate family;
Nibbānaṁ paramaṁ sukhaṁ. Nibbāna is the highest happiness. extinguishment, the ultimate happiness.
Tissattheravatthu
Pavivekarasaṁ pitvā, Having tasted the flavor of seclusion Having drunk the nectar of seclusion
rasaṁ upasamassa ca; and the flavor of peace, and the nectar of peace—
Niddaro hoti nippāpo, free from anguish, flawless, free of stress, free of evil,
dhammapītirasaṁ pivaṁ. one tastes the bliss of the Dhamma. drink the joyous nectar of truth.
Sakkavatthu
Sāhu dassanamariyānaṁ, It is good to see the Noble Ones, It’s good to see the noble ones,
sannivāso sadā sukho; living with them is always pleasant. staying with them is always good.
Adassanena bālānaṁ, One who does not see fools Were you not to see fools,
niccameva sukhī siyā. will always be happy. you’d always be happy.
Bālasaṅgatacārī hi, Those who go with fools For one who consorts with fools
dīghamaddhāna socati; will sorrow for a long time. grieves long.
Dukkho bālehi saṁvāso, Living with fools is painful, Painful is dwelling with fools,
amitteneva sabbadā; like being with an enemy all the time. like being stuck with your enemy.
Dhīro ca sukhasaṁvāso, But living with the wise is pleasant, Happy is dwelling with an attentive one,
ñātīnaṁva samāgamo. like being together with one's relatives. like meeting with your kin.
Tasmā hi—Therefore, Therefore:
Dhīrañca paññañca bahussutañca, follow one who is steadfast, wise, and educated, An attentive one, wise and learned,
Dhorayhasīlaṁ vatavantamariyaṁ; a good person who is patient, devout, noble, and astute, a behemoth of virtue, true to their vows, noble:
Taṁ tādisaṁ sappurisaṁ sumedhaṁ, follow that person, follow a true and intelligent person such as this,
Bhajetha nakkhattapathaṁva candimā. as the moon follows the path of the stars. as the moon tracks the path of the stars.
