LobhapariƱƱāsutta Complete Understanding of Greed

VuttaƱhetaį¹ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaį¹: This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.

ā€œLobhaį¹, bhikkhave, anabhijānaį¹ aparijānaį¹ tattha cittaį¹ avirājayaį¹ appajahaį¹ abhabbo dukkhakkhayāya. ā€œMendicants, without directly knowing and completely understanding greed, without dispassion for it and giving it up, you canā€™t end suffering.

LobhaƱca kho, bhikkhave, abhijānaį¹ parijānaį¹ tattha cittaį¹ virājayaį¹ pajahaį¹ bhabbo dukkhakkhayāyāā€ti. By directly knowing and completely understanding greed, having dispassion for it and giving it up, you can end suffering.ā€

Etamatthaį¹ bhagavā avoca. The Buddha spoke this matter.

Tatthetaį¹ iti vuccati: On this it is said:

ā€œYena lobhena luddhāse, ā€œWhen overcome by greed

sattā gacchanti duggatiį¹; beings go to a bad place.

Taį¹ lobhaį¹ sammadaƱƱāya, Having rightly understood that greed,

pajahanti vipassino; the discerning give it up.

Pahāya na punāyanti, Once theyā€™ve given it up,

imaį¹ lokaį¹ kudācananā€ti. they never return to this world.ā€

Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti. This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.

Navamaį¹.
