AvijjānÄ«varaį¹‡asutta The Shroud of Ignorance

VuttaƱhetaį¹ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaį¹: This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.

ā€œNāhaį¹, bhikkhave, aƱƱaį¹ ekanÄ«varaį¹‡ampi samanupassāmi yena nÄ«varaį¹‡ena nivutā pajā dÄ«gharattaį¹ sandhāvanti saį¹saranti yathayidaį¹, bhikkhave, avijjānÄ«varaį¹‡aį¹. ā€œMendicants, I do not see a single shroud, shrouded by which people wander and transmigrate for a long time like the shroud of ignorance.

AvijjānÄ«varaį¹‡ena hi, bhikkhave, nivutā pajā dÄ«gharattaį¹ sandhāvanti saį¹sarantÄ«ā€ti. Shrouded by ignorance, people wander and transmigrate for a long time.ā€

Etamatthaį¹ bhagavā avoca. The Buddha spoke this matter.

Tatthetaį¹ iti vuccati: On this it is said:

ā€œNatthaƱƱo ekadhammopi, ā€œThere is no other thing

yenevaį¹ nivutā pajā; that shrouds people like ignorance.

Saį¹saranti ahorattaį¹, Veiled by delusion,

yathā mohena āvutā. they transmigrate day and night.

Ye ca mohaį¹ pahantvāna, Those who have given up delusion,

tamokhandhaį¹ padālayuį¹; shattering the mass of darkness,

Na te puna saį¹saranti, wander no more,

hetu tesaį¹ na vijjatÄ«ā€ti. the root is not found in them.ā€

Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti. This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.

Catutthaį¹.
