AvijjÄnÄ«varaį¹asutta The Shroud of Ignorance
VuttaƱhetaį¹ bhagavatÄ vuttamarahatÄti me sutaį¹: This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.
āNÄhaį¹, bhikkhave, aƱƱaį¹ ekanÄ«varaį¹ampi samanupassÄmi yena nÄ«varaį¹ena nivutÄ pajÄ dÄ«gharattaį¹ sandhÄvanti saį¹saranti yathayidaį¹, bhikkhave, avijjÄnÄ«varaį¹aį¹. āMendicants, I do not see a single shroud, shrouded by which people wander and transmigrate for a long time like the shroud of ignorance.
AvijjÄnÄ«varaį¹ena hi, bhikkhave, nivutÄ pajÄ dÄ«gharattaį¹ sandhÄvanti saį¹sarantÄ«āti. Shrouded by ignorance, people wander and transmigrate for a long time.ā
Etamatthaį¹ bhagavÄ avoca. The Buddha spoke this matter.
Tatthetaį¹ iti vuccati: On this it is said:
āNatthaƱƱo ekadhammopi, āThere is no other thing
yenevaį¹ nivutÄ pajÄ; that shrouds people like ignorance.
Saį¹saranti ahorattaį¹, Veiled by delusion,
yathÄ mohena ÄvutÄ. they transmigrate day and night.
Ye ca mohaį¹ pahantvÄna, Those who have given up delusion,
tamokhandhaį¹ padÄlayuį¹; shattering the mass of darkness,
Na te puna saį¹saranti, wander no more,
hetu tesaį¹ na vijjatÄ«āti. the root is not found in them.ā
Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatÄ, iti me sutanti. This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
