VuttaƱhetaį¹ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaį¹: This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.

ā€œSekhassa, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno appattamānasassa anuttaraį¹ yogakkhemaį¹ patthayamānassa viharato bāhiraį¹ aį¹…ganti karitvā nāƱƱaį¹ ekaį¹…gampi samanupassāmi yaį¹ evaį¹ bahÅ«pakāraį¹ yathayidaį¹, bhikkhave, kalyāį¹‡amittatā. ā€œTaking into account exterior factors, mendicants, I do not see a single one that is so very helpful as good friendship for a trainee mendicant who hasnā€™t achieved their heartā€™s desire, but lives aspiring to the supreme sanctuary from the yoke.

Kalyāį¹‡amitto, bhikkhave, bhikkhu akusalaį¹ pajahati, kusalaį¹ bhāvetÄ«ā€ti. A mendicant who has good friends gives up the unskillful and develops the skillful.ā€

Etamatthaį¹ bhagavā avoca. The Buddha spoke this matter.

Tatthetaį¹ iti vuccati: On this it is said:

ā€œKalyāį¹‡amitto yo bhikkhu, ā€œA mendicant with good friends

sappatisso sagāravo; is reverential and respectful

Karaį¹ mittānaį¹ vacanaį¹, when their friends are speaking,

sampajāno patissato; aware and mindful.

Pāpuį¹‡e anupubbena, Gradually they would attain

sabbasaį¹yojanakkhayanā€ti. the ending of all fetters.ā€

Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti. This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
