VuttaƱhetaį¹ bhagavatÄ vuttamarahatÄti me sutaį¹: This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.
āSekhassa, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno appattamÄnasassa anuttaraį¹ yogakkhemaį¹ patthayamÄnassa viharato bÄhiraį¹ aį¹
ganti karitvÄ nÄƱƱaį¹ ekaį¹
gampi samanupassÄmi yaį¹ evaį¹ bahÅ«pakÄraį¹ yathayidaį¹, bhikkhave, kalyÄį¹amittatÄ. āTaking into account exterior factors, mendicants, I do not see a single one that is so very helpful as good friendship for a trainee mendicant who hasnāt achieved their heartās desire, but lives aspiring to the supreme sanctuary from the yoke.
KalyÄį¹amitto, bhikkhave, bhikkhu akusalaį¹ pajahati, kusalaį¹ bhÄvetÄ«āti. A mendicant who has good friends gives up the unskillful and develops the skillful.ā
Etamatthaį¹ bhagavÄ avoca. The Buddha spoke this matter.
Tatthetaį¹ iti vuccati: On this it is said:
āKalyÄį¹amitto yo bhikkhu, āA mendicant with good friends
sappatisso sagÄravo; is reverential and respectful
Karaį¹ mittÄnaį¹ vacanaį¹, when their friends are speaking,
sampajÄno patissato; aware and mindful.
PÄpuį¹e anupubbena, Gradually they would attain
sabbasaį¹yojanakkhayanāti. the ending of all fetters.ā
Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatÄ, iti me sutanti. This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
