Saį¹…ghabhedasutta Schism in the Saį¹…gha

VuttaƱhetaį¹ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaį¹: This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.

ā€œEkadhammo, bhikkhave, loke uppajjamāno uppajjati bahujanāhitāya bahujanāsukhāya bahuno janassa anatthāya ahitāya dukkhāya devamanussānaį¹. ā€œOne thing, mendicants, arises in the world for the detriment and suffering of the people, against the people, for the harm, detriment, and suffering of gods and humans.

Katamo ekadhammo? What one thing?

Saį¹…ghabhedo. Schism in the Saį¹…gha.

Saį¹…ghe kho pana, bhikkhave, bhinne aƱƱamaƱƱaį¹ bhaį¹‡įøanāni ceva honti, aƱƱamaƱƱaį¹ paribhāsā ca honti, aƱƱamaƱƱaį¹ parikkhepā ca honti, aƱƱamaƱƱaį¹ pariccajanā ca honti. When the Saį¹…gha is split, they argue, insult, block, and forsake each other.

Tattha appasannā ceva nappasÄ«danti, pasannānaƱca ekaccānaį¹ aƱƱathattaį¹ hotÄ«ā€ti. This doesnā€™t inspire confidence in those without it, and it causes some with confidence to change their minds.ā€

Etamatthaį¹ bhagavā avoca. The Buddha spoke this matter.

Tatthetaį¹ iti vuccati: On this it is said:

ā€œÄ€pāyiko nerayiko, ā€œA schismatic remains for the eon

Kappaį¹­į¹­ho saį¹…ghabhedako; in a place of loss, in hell.

Vaggārāmo adhammaį¹­į¹­ho, Taking a stand against the teaching,

Yogakkhemā padhaį¹sati; favoring factions, they ruin their sanctuary.

Saį¹…ghaį¹ samaggaį¹ bhetvāna, After causing schism in a harmonious Saį¹…gha,

Kappaį¹ nirayamhi paccatÄ«ā€ti. they burn in hell for an eon.ā€

Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti. This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
