VuttaƱhetaį¹ bhagavatÄ vuttamarahatÄti me sutaį¹: This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.
āEkadhammo, bhikkhave, loke uppajjamÄno uppajjati bahujanÄhitÄya bahujanÄsukhÄya bahuno janassa anatthÄya ahitÄya dukkhÄya devamanussÄnaį¹. āOne thing, mendicants, arises in the world for the detriment and suffering of the people, against the people, for the harm, detriment, and suffering of gods and humans.

ghe kho pana, bhikkhave, bhinne aƱƱamaƱƱaį¹ bhaį¹įøanÄni ceva honti, aƱƱamaƱƱaį¹ paribhÄsÄ ca honti, aƱƱamaƱƱaį¹ parikkhepÄ ca honti, aƱƱamaƱƱaį¹ pariccajanÄ ca honti. When the Saį¹
gha is split, they argue, insult, block, and forsake each other.
Tattha appasannÄ ceva nappasÄ«danti, pasannÄnaƱca ekaccÄnaį¹ aƱƱathattaį¹ hotÄ«āti. This doesnāt inspire confidence in those without it, and it causes some with confidence to change their minds.ā
Etamatthaį¹ bhagavÄ avoca. The Buddha spoke this matter.
Tatthetaį¹ iti vuccati: On this it is said:
āÄpÄyiko nerayiko, āA schismatic remains for the eon
Kappaį¹į¹ho saį¹
ghabhedako; in a place of loss, in hell.
VaggÄrÄmo adhammaį¹į¹ho, Taking a stand against the teaching,
YogakkhemÄ padhaį¹sati; favoring factions, they ruin their sanctuary.

ghaį¹ samaggaį¹ bhetvÄna, After causing schism in a harmonious Saį¹
gha,
Kappaį¹ nirayamhi paccatÄ«āti. they burn in hell for an eon.ā
Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatÄ, iti me sutanti. This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
