Saį¹…ghasāmaggÄ«sutta Harmony in the Saį¹…gha

VuttaƱhetaį¹ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaį¹: This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.

ā€œEkadhammo, bhikkhave, loke uppajjamāno uppajjati bahujanahitāya bahujanasukhāya bahuno janassa atthāya hitāya sukhāya devamanussānaį¹. ā€œOne thing, mendicants, arises in the world for the welfare and happiness of the people, for the people, for the benefit, welfare, and happiness of gods and humans.

Katamo ekadhammo? What one thing?

Saį¹…ghasāmaggÄ«. Harmony in the Saį¹…gha.

Saį¹…ghe kho pana, bhikkhave, samagge na ceva aƱƱamaƱƱaį¹ bhaį¹‡įøanāni honti, na ca aƱƱamaƱƱaį¹ paribhāsā honti, na ca aƱƱamaƱƱaį¹ parikkhepā honti, na ca aƱƱamaƱƱaį¹ pariccajanā honti. When the Saį¹…gha is in harmony, they donā€™t argue, insult, block, or forsake each other.

Tattha appasannā ceva pasÄ«danti, pasannānaƱca bhiyyobhāvo hotÄ«ā€ti. This inspires confidence in those without it, and increases confidence in those who have it.ā€

Etamatthaį¹ bhagavā avoca. The Buddha spoke this matter.

Tatthetaį¹ iti vuccati: On this it is said:

ā€œSukhā saį¹…ghassa sāmaggÄ«, ā€œA Saį¹…gha in harmony is happy,

samaggānaƱcanuggaho; as is support for those in harmony.

Samaggarato dhammaį¹­į¹­ho, Taking a stand on the teaching,

yogakkhemā na dhaį¹sati; favoring harmony, they ruin no sanctuary.

Saį¹…ghaį¹ samaggaį¹ katvāna, After creating harmony in the Saį¹…gha,

kappaį¹ saggamhi modatÄ«ā€ti. they rejoice in heaven for an eon.ā€

Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti. This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
