Pasannacittasutta A Pure Mind
VuttaƱhetaį¹ bhagavatÄ vuttamarahatÄti me sutaį¹: This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.
āIdhÄhaį¹, bhikkhave, ekaccaį¹ puggalaį¹ pasannacittaį¹ evaį¹ cetasÄ ceto paricca pajÄnÄmi: āMendicants, when Iāve comprehended the mind of a person whose mind is pure, I understand:
āimamhi cÄyaį¹ samaye puggalo kÄlaį¹ kareyya yathÄbhataį¹ nikkhitto evaį¹ saggeā. āIf this person were to die right now, they would be raised up to heaven.ā
Taį¹ kissa hetu? Why is that?
Cittaį¹ hissa, bhikkhave, pasannaį¹. Because their mind is pure.
CetopasÄdahetu kho pana, bhikkhave, evamāidhekacce sattÄ kÄyassa bhedÄ paraį¹ maraį¹Ä sugatiį¹ saggaį¹ lokaį¹ upapajjantÄ«āti. Purity of mind is the reason why some sentient beings, when their body breaks up, after death, are reborn in a good place, a heavenly realm.ā
Etamatthaį¹ bhagavÄ avoca. The Buddha spoke this matter.
Tatthetaį¹ iti vuccati: On this it is said:
āPasannacittaį¹ ƱatvÄna, āKnowing a personās
ekaccaį¹ idha puggalaį¹; pure mind,
EtamatthaƱca byÄkÄsi, the Buddha explained this matter
buddho bhikkhÅ«na santike. in the mendicantsā presence.
Imamhi cÄyaį¹ samaye, If that person
kÄlaį¹ kayirÄtha puggalo; were to die at this time,
Sugatiį¹ upapajjeyya, theyād be reborn in heaven,
cittaį¹ hissa pasÄditaį¹. for their mind is pure.
YathÄ haritvÄ nikkhipeyya, Such a person is raised up as surely
evamevaį¹ tathÄvidho; as if theyād been carried and put there.
CetopasÄdahetu hi, For purity of mind is the reason
sattÄ gacchanti suggatināti. sentient beings go to a good place.ā
Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatÄ, iti me sutanti. This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
