VuttaƱhetaį¹ bhagavatÄ vuttamarahatÄti me sutaį¹: This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.
āEkadhammaį¹ atÄ«tassa, bhikkhave, purisapuggalassa nÄhaį¹ tassa kiƱci pÄpakammaį¹ akaraį¹Ä«yanti vadÄmi. āMendicants, for an individual who transgresses in one thing, there is no bad deed they would not do, I say.
Katamaį¹ ekadhammaį¹? What one thing?
Yadidaį¹, bhikkhave, sampajÄnamusÄvÄdoāti. It is this: telling a deliberate lie.ā
Etamatthaį¹ bhagavÄ avoca. The Buddha spoke this matter.
Tatthetaį¹ iti vuccati: On this it is said:
āEkadhammaį¹ atÄ«tassa, āWhen a person, spurning the hereafter,
musÄvÄdissa jantuno; transgresses in just one thingā
Vitiį¹į¹aparalokassa, lyingā
natthi pÄpaį¹ akÄriyanāti. there is no evil they would not do.ā
Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatÄ, iti me sutanti. This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
