VuttaƱhetaį¹ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaį¹: This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.

ā€œEkadhammaį¹ atÄ«tassa, bhikkhave, purisapuggalassa nāhaį¹ tassa kiƱci pāpakammaį¹ akaraį¹‡Ä«yanti vadāmi. ā€œMendicants, for an individual who transgresses in one thing, there is no bad deed they would not do, I say.

Katamaį¹ ekadhammaį¹? What one thing?

Yadidaį¹, bhikkhave, sampajānamusāvādoā€ti. It is this: telling a deliberate lie.ā€

Etamatthaį¹ bhagavā avoca. The Buddha spoke this matter.

Tatthetaį¹ iti vuccati: On this it is said:

ā€œEkadhammaį¹ atÄ«tassa, ā€œWhen a person, spurning the hereafter,

musāvādissa jantuno; transgresses in just one thingā€”

Vitiį¹‡į¹‡aparalokassa, lyingā€”

natthi pāpaį¹ akāriyanā€ti. there is no evil they would not do.ā€

Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti. This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
