Dukanipāta The Book of the Twos

Paį¹hamavagga Chapter One

Tapanīyasutta Mortifying

VuttaƱhetaį¹ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaį¹: This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.

ā€œDveme, bhikkhave, dhammā tapanÄ«yā. ā€œThese two things, mendicants, are mortifying.

Katame dve? What two?

Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco akatakalyāį¹‡o hoti, akatakusalo, akatabhÄ«ruttāį¹‡o, katapāpo, kataluddo, katakibbiso. Itā€™s when someone hasnā€™t done good and skillful things that keep them safe, but has done bad things, violence and sin.

So ā€˜akataį¹ me kalyāį¹‡anā€™tipi tappati, ā€˜kataį¹ me pāpanā€™tipi tappati. Thinking, ā€˜I havenā€™t done good thingsā€™, theyā€™re mortified. Thinking, ā€˜I have done bad thingsā€™, theyā€™re mortified.

Ime kho, bhikkhave, dve dhammā tapanÄ«yāā€ti. These are the two things that are mortifying.ā€

Etamatthaį¹ bhagavā avoca. The Buddha spoke this matter.

Tatthetaį¹ iti vuccati: On this it is said:

ā€œKāyaduccaritaį¹ katvā, ā€œHaving done bad things

vacīduccaritāni ca; by way of body,

Manoduccaritaį¹ katvā, speech, and mind,

yaƱcaƱƱaį¹ dosasaƱhitaį¹. and whatever else is corrupt;

Akatvā kusalaį¹ kammaį¹, not having done good deeds,

katvānākusalaį¹ bahuį¹; and having done many bad,

Kāyassa bhedā duppaƱƱo, when their body breaks up, that witless person

nirayaį¹ sopapajjatÄ«ā€ti. is reborn in hell.ā€

Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti. This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.

Tatiyaį¹.
