ÄtÄpÄ«sutta Keen
VuttaƱhetaį¹ bhagavatÄ vuttamarahatÄti me sutaį¹: This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.
āAnÄtÄpÄ«, bhikkhave, bhikkhu anottÄpÄ« abhabbo sambodhÄya, abhabbo nibbÄnÄya, abhabbo anuttarassa yogakkhemassa adhigamÄya. āMendicants, without being keen and prudent a mendicant canāt achieve awakening, extinguishment, and the supreme sanctuary from the yoke.
ÄtÄpÄ« ca kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu ottÄpÄ« bhabbo sambodhÄya, bhabbo nibbÄnÄya, bhabbo anuttarassa yogakkhemassa adhigamÄyÄāti. But if a mendicant is keen and prudent they can achieve awakening, extinguishment, and the supreme sanctuary from the yoke.ā
Etamatthaį¹ bhagavÄ avoca. The Buddha spoke this matter.
Tatthetaį¹ iti vuccati: On this it is said:
āAnÄtÄpÄ« anottÄpÄ«, āNeither keen nor prudent,
kusīto hīnavīriyo; lazy, lacking energy,
Yo thinamiddhabahulo, full of dullness and drowsiness,
ahirÄ«ko anÄdaro; unconscientious, lacking regard for others,
Abhabbo tÄdiso bhikkhu, such a mendicant is incapable
phuį¹į¹huį¹ sambodhimuttamaį¹. of experiencing the highest awakening.
Yo ca satimÄ nipako jhÄyÄ«, One who is mindful, alert, meditative,
ÄtÄpÄ« ottÄpÄ« ca appamatto; keen, prudent, and diligent,
Saį¹yojanaį¹ jÄtijarÄya chetvÄ, having cut the fetter of birth and old age,
Idheva sambodhimanuttaraį¹ phuseāti. would experience supreme awakening in this very life.ā
Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatÄ, iti me sutanti. This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
