Dutiyajananakuhanasutta Deceit and Flattery
VuttaƱhetaį¹ bhagavatÄ vuttamarahatÄti me sutaį¹: This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.
āNayidaį¹, bhikkhave, brahmacariyaį¹ vussati janakuhanatthaį¹, na janalapanatthaį¹, na lÄbhasakkÄrasilokÄnisaį¹satthaį¹, na āiti maį¹ jano jÄnÄtÅ«āti. āMendicants, this spiritual life is not lived for the sake of deceiving people or flattering them, nor for the benefit of possessions, honor, or popularity, nor thinking, āSo let people know about me!ā
Atha kho idaį¹, bhikkhave, brahmacariyaį¹ vussati abhiƱƱatthaƱceva pariƱƱatthaƱcÄāti. This spiritual life is lived for the sake of direct knowledge and complete understanding.ā
Etamatthaį¹ bhagavÄ avoca. The Buddha spoke this matter.
Tatthetaį¹ iti vuccati: On this it is said:
āAbhiƱƱatthaį¹ pariƱƱatthaį¹, āThe Buddha taught the spiritual life
brahmacariyaį¹ anÄ«tihaį¹; not because of tradition,
Adesayi so bhagavÄ, but for the sake of insight and understanding,
nibbÄnogadhagÄminaį¹. and because it culminates in extinguishment.
Esa maggo mahattehi, This is the path followed by the great souls,
anuyÄto mahesibhi; the great seers.
Ye ye taį¹ paį¹ipajjanti, Those who practice it
yathÄ buddhena desitaį¹; as it was taught by the Buddha
Dukkhassantaį¹ karissanti, doing the teacherās bidding,
satthusÄsanakÄrinoāti. make an end of suffering.ā
Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatÄ, iti me sutanti. This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
