Somanassasutta Happiness

VuttaƱhetaį¹ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaį¹: This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.

ā€œDvÄ«hi, bhikkhave, dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu diį¹­į¹­heva dhamme sukhasomanassabahulo viharati, yoni cassa āraddhā hoti āsavānaį¹ khayāya. ā€œMendicants, when a mendicant has two qualities theyā€™re full of joy and happiness in this very life, and they have laid the groundwork for ending the defilements.

Katamehi dvīhi? What two?

Saį¹vejanÄ«yesu į¹­hānesu saį¹vejanena, saį¹viggassa ca yoniso padhānena. Being inspired at inspiring places, and making a suitable effort when inspired.

Imehi kho, bhikkhave, dvÄ«hi dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu diį¹­į¹­heva dhamme sukhasomanassabahulo viharati, yoni cassa āraddhā hoti āsavānaį¹ khayāyāā€ti. When a mendicant has these two qualities theyā€™re full of joy and happiness in this very life, and they have laid the groundwork for ending the defilements.ā€

Etamatthaį¹ bhagavā avoca. The Buddha spoke this matter.

Tatthetaį¹ iti vuccati: On this it is said:

ā€œSaį¹vejanÄ«yaį¹­į¹­hānesu, ā€œAt inspiring places

saį¹vijjetheva paį¹‡įøito; an astute person should be inspired;

Ātāpī nipako bhikkhu, a keen and alert mendicant

paƱƱāya samavekkhiya. should examine with wisdom.

Evaį¹ vihārÄ« ātāpÄ«, A mendicant living like this, with keen energy,

santavutti anuddhato; peaceful not restless,

Cetosamathamanuyutto, devoted to serenity of heart,

khayaį¹ dukkhassa pāpuį¹‡eā€ti. attains the ending of suffering.ā€

Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti. This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.

Paį¹­hamo vaggo.

Tassuddānaį¹

Dve ca bhikkhū tapanīyā,

tapanīyā paratthehi;

Ātāpī nakuhanā dve,

somanassena te dasāti.
