VuttaƱhetaį¹ bhagavatÄ vuttamarahatÄti me sutaį¹: This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.
āTathÄgatassa, bhikkhave, arahato sammÄsambuddhassa dve dhammadesanÄ pariyÄyena bhavanti. āMendicants, the Realized One, the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha has two approaches to teaching Dhamma.
KatamÄ dve? What two?
āPÄpaį¹ pÄpakato passathÄātiāāSee evil as evilāā
ayaį¹ paį¹hamÄ dhammadesanÄ; this is the first approach to teaching Dhamma.
āpÄpaį¹ pÄpakato disvÄ tattha nibbindatha virajjatha vimuccathÄātiāāHaving seen evil as evil, be disillusioned, dispassionate, and freed from itāā
ayaį¹ dutiyÄ dhammadesanÄ. this is the second approach to teaching Dhamma.
TathÄgatassa, bhikkhave, arahato sammÄsambuddhassa imÄ dve dhammadesanÄ pariyÄyena bhavantÄ«āti. The Realized One, the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha has these two approaches to teaching Dhamma.ā
Etamatthaį¹ bhagavÄ avoca. The Buddha spoke this matter.
Tatthetaį¹ iti vuccati: On this it is said:
āTathÄgatassa buddhassa, āSee the two approaches for
sabbabhÅ«tÄnukampino; explaining the Dhamma
PariyÄyavacanaį¹ passa, used by the Realized One, the Buddha,
dve ca dhammÄ pakÄsitÄ. compassionate for all beings:
PÄpakaį¹ passatha cetaį¹, see that that is evil,
tattha cÄpi virajjatha; and be dispassionate towards it.
Tato virattacittÄse, Then, with a mind free of desire,
dukkhassantaį¹ karissathÄāti. you will make an end of suffering.ā
Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatÄ, iti me sutanti. This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
