Desanāsutta Teaching

VuttaƱhetaį¹ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaį¹: This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.

ā€œTathāgatassa, bhikkhave, arahato sammāsambuddhassa dve dhammadesanā pariyāyena bhavanti. ā€œMendicants, the Realized One, the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha has two approaches to teaching Dhamma.

Katamā dve? What two?

ā€˜Pāpaį¹ pāpakato passathāā€™tiā€”ā€˜See evil as evilā€™ā€”

ayaį¹ paį¹­hamā dhammadesanā; this is the first approach to teaching Dhamma.

ā€˜pāpaį¹ pāpakato disvā tattha nibbindatha virajjatha vimuccathāā€™tiā€”ā€˜Having seen evil as evil, be disillusioned, dispassionate, and freed from itā€™ā€”

ayaį¹ dutiyā dhammadesanā. this is the second approach to teaching Dhamma.

Tathāgatassa, bhikkhave, arahato sammāsambuddhassa imā dve dhammadesanā pariyāyena bhavantÄ«ā€ti. The Realized One, the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha has these two approaches to teaching Dhamma.ā€

Etamatthaį¹ bhagavā avoca. The Buddha spoke this matter.

Tatthetaį¹ iti vuccati: On this it is said:

ā€œTathāgatassa buddhassa, ā€œSee the two approaches for

sabbabhūtānukampino; explaining the Dhamma

Pariyāyavacanaį¹ passa, used by the Realized One, the Buddha,

dve ca dhammā pakāsitā. compassionate for all beings:

Pāpakaį¹ passatha cetaį¹, see that that is evil,

tattha cāpi virajjatha; and be dispassionate towards it.

Tato virattacittāse, Then, with a mind free of desire,

dukkhassantaį¹ karissathāā€ti. you will make an end of suffering.ā€

Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti. This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
