Dukanipāta The Book of the Twos

Dutiyavagga Chapter Two

Ajātasutta Free of Rebirth

VuttaƱhetaį¹ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaį¹: This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.

ā€œAtthi, bhikkhave, ajātaį¹ abhÅ«taį¹ akataį¹ asaį¹…khataį¹. ā€œThere is, mendicants, freedom from rebirth, freedom from what has been produced, made, and conditioned.

No cetaį¹, bhikkhave, abhavissa ajātaį¹ abhÅ«taį¹ akataį¹ asaį¹…khataį¹, nayidha jātassa bhÅ«tassa katassa saį¹…khatassa nissaraį¹‡aį¹ paƱƱāyetha. If there were no freedom from rebirth, freedom from what has been produced, made, and conditioned, then you would find no escape here from rebirth, from what has been produced, made, and conditioned.

Yasmā ca kho, bhikkhave, atthi ajātaį¹ abhÅ«taį¹ akataį¹ asaį¹…khataį¹, tasmā jātassa bhÅ«tassa katassa saį¹…khatassa nissaraį¹‡aį¹ paƱƱāyatÄ«ā€ti. But since there is freedom from rebirth, freedom from what has been produced, made, and conditioned, an escape is found from rebirth, from what has been produced, made, and conditioned.ā€

Etamatthaį¹ bhagavā avoca. The Buddha spoke this matter.

Tatthetaį¹ iti vuccati: On this it is said:

ā€œJātaį¹ bhÅ«taį¹ samuppannaį¹, ā€œWhatā€™s reborn, produced, and arisen,

kataį¹ saį¹…khatamaddhuvaį¹; made, conditioned, not lasting,

Jarāmaraį¹‡asaį¹…ghāį¹aį¹, wrapped in old age and death,

roganÄ«įø·aį¹ pabhaį¹…guraį¹. frail, a nest of disease,

Āhāranettippabhavaį¹, generated by food and the conduit to rebirth:

nālaį¹ tadabhinandituį¹; thatā€™s not fit to delight in.

Tassa nissaraį¹‡aį¹ santaį¹, The escape from that is peaceful,

atakkāvacaraį¹ dhuvaį¹. beyond the scope of logic, everlasting,

Ajātaį¹ asamuppannaį¹, where nothing is reborn or arisen,

asokaį¹ virajaį¹ padaį¹; the sorrowless, stainless state,

Nirodho dukkhadhammānaį¹, the cessation of all painful things,

saį¹…khārÅ«pasamo sukhoā€ti. the blissful stilling of conditions.ā€

Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti. This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.

Chaį¹į¹haį¹.
