NibbÄnadhÄtusutta Elements of Extinguishment
VuttaƱhetaį¹ bhagavatÄ vuttamarahatÄti me sutaį¹: This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.
āDvemÄ, bhikkhave, nibbÄnadhÄtuyo. āThere are, mendicants, these two elements of extinguishment.
KatamÄ dve? What two?
SaupÄdisesÄ ca nibbÄnadhÄtu, anupÄdisesÄ ca nibbÄnadhÄtu. The element of extinguishment with residue, and the element of extinguishment with no residue.
KatamÄ ca, bhikkhave, saupÄdisesÄ nibbÄnadhÄtu? And what is the element of extinguishment with residue?
Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu arahaį¹ hoti khÄ«į¹Äsavo vusitavÄ katakaraį¹Ä«yo ohitabhÄro anuppattasadattho parikkhÄ«į¹abhavasaį¹yojano sammadaƱƱÄvimutto. Itās when a mendicant is a perfected one, with defilements ended, who has completed the spiritual journey, done what had to be done, laid down the burden, achieved their own true goal, utterly ended the fetter of continued existence, and is rightly freed through enlightenment.
Tassa tiį¹į¹hanteva paƱcindriyÄni yesaį¹ avighÄtattÄ manÄpÄmanÄpaį¹ paccanubhoti, sukhadukkhaį¹ paį¹isaį¹vedeti. Their five sense faculties still remain. So long as their senses have not gone they continue to experience the agreeable and disagreeable, to feel pleasure and pain.
Tassa yo rÄgakkhayo, dosakkhayo, mohakkhayoāThe ending of greed, hate, and delusion in them
ayaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, saupÄdisesÄ nibbÄnadhÄtu. is called the element of extinguishment with residue.
KatamÄ ca, bhikkhave, anupÄdisesÄ nibbÄnadhÄtu? And what is the element of extinguishment with no residue?

Ayaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, anupÄdisesÄ nibbÄnadhÄtu. This is called the element of extinguishment with no residue.
ImÄ kho, bhikkhave, dve nibbÄnadhÄtuyoāti. These are the two elements of extinguishment.ā
Etamatthaį¹ bhagavÄ avoca. The Buddha spoke this matter.
Tatthetaį¹ iti vuccati: On this it is said:
āDuve imÄ cakkhumatÄ pakÄsitÄ, āThese two elements of extinguishment have been explained
NibbÄnadhÄtÅ« anissitena tÄdinÄ; by the Clear-eyed One, the unattached, the unaffected.
EkÄ hi dhÄtu idha diį¹į¹hadhammikÄ, One element pertains to this lifeā
SaupÄdisesÄ bhavanettisaį¹
khayÄ; that with residue though the conduit to rebirth has ended;
AnupÄdisesÄ pana samparÄyikÄ, and that with no residue, which pertains to what follows this life,
Yamhi nirujjhanti bhavÄni sabbaso. where all states of existence cease.
Ye etadaƱƱÄya padaį¹ asaį¹
khataį¹, Those who have fully understood the unconditioned stateā
VimuttacittÄ bhavanettisaį¹
khayÄ; their minds freed, the conduit to rebirth endedā
Te dhammasÄrÄdhigamÄ khaye ratÄ, attained to the heart of the Dhamma, they delight in ending,
Pahaį¹su te sabbabhavÄni tÄdinoāti. the unaffected ones have given up all states of existence.ā
Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatÄ, iti me sutanti. This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
