VuttaƱhetaį¹ bhagavatÄ vuttamarahatÄti me sutaį¹: This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.
āPaį¹isallÄnÄrÄmÄ, bhikkhave, viharatha paį¹isallÄnaratÄ, ajjhattaį¹ cetosamathamanuyuttÄ, anirÄkatajjhÄnÄ, vipassanÄya samannÄgatÄ, brÅ«hetÄro suƱƱÄgÄrÄnaį¹. āEnjoy retreat, mendicants, love retreat. Be committed to inner serenity of the heart, donāt neglect absorption, be endowed with discernment, and frequent empty huts.
Paį¹isallÄnÄrÄmÄnaį¹, bhikkhave, viharataį¹ paį¹isallÄnaratÄnaį¹ ajjhattaį¹ cetosamathamanuyuttÄnaį¹ anirÄkatajjhÄnÄnaį¹ vipassanÄya samannÄgatÄnaį¹ brÅ«hetÄnaį¹ suƱƱÄgÄrÄnaį¹ dvinnaį¹ phalÄnaį¹ aƱƱataraį¹ phalaį¹ pÄį¹ikaį¹
khaį¹āA mendicant who enjoys retreat can expect one of two results:
diį¹į¹heva dhamme aƱƱÄ, sati vÄ upÄdisese anÄgÄmitÄāti. enlightenment in this very life, or if thereās something left over, non-return.ā
Etamatthaį¹ bhagavÄ avoca. The Buddha spoke this matter.
Tatthetaį¹ iti vuccati: On this it is said:
āYe santacittÄ nipakÄ, āWith minds at peace, alert,
satimanto ca jhÄyino; mindful and meditative,
SammÄ dhammaį¹ vipassanti, they rightly discern the Dhamma,
kÄmesu anapekkhino. unconcerned for sensual pleasures.
AppamÄdaratÄ santÄ, Delighting in diligence, peaceful,
pamÄde bhayadassino; seeing fear in negligence,
AbhabbÄ parihÄnÄya, such a one canāt decline,
nibbÄnasseva santikeāti. and has drawn near to extinguishment.ā
Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatÄ, iti me sutanti. This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
