Paį¹­isallānasutta Retreat

VuttaƱhetaį¹ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaį¹: This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.

ā€œPaį¹­isallānārāmā, bhikkhave, viharatha paį¹­isallānaratā, ajjhattaį¹ cetosamathamanuyuttā, anirākatajjhānā, vipassanāya samannāgatā, brÅ«hetāro suƱƱāgārānaį¹. ā€œEnjoy retreat, mendicants, love retreat. Be committed to inner serenity of the heart, donā€™t neglect absorption, be endowed with discernment, and frequent empty huts.

Paį¹­isallānārāmānaį¹, bhikkhave, viharataį¹ paį¹­isallānaratānaį¹ ajjhattaį¹ cetosamathamanuyuttānaį¹ anirākatajjhānānaį¹ vipassanāya samannāgatānaį¹ brÅ«hetānaį¹ suƱƱāgārānaį¹ dvinnaį¹ phalānaį¹ aƱƱataraį¹ phalaį¹ pāį¹­ikaį¹…khaį¹ā€”A mendicant who enjoys retreat can expect one of two results:

diį¹­į¹­heva dhamme aƱƱā, sati vā upādisese anāgāmitāā€ti. enlightenment in this very life, or if thereā€™s something left over, non-return.ā€

Etamatthaį¹ bhagavā avoca. The Buddha spoke this matter.

Tatthetaį¹ iti vuccati: On this it is said:

ā€œYe santacittā nipakā, ā€œWith minds at peace, alert,

satimanto ca jhāyino; mindful and meditative,

Sammā dhammaį¹ vipassanti, they rightly discern the Dhamma,

kāmesu anapekkhino. unconcerned for sensual pleasures.

Appamādaratā santā, Delighting in diligence, peaceful,

pamāde bhayadassino; seeing fear in negligence,

Abhabbā parihānāya, such a one canā€™t decline,

nibbānasseva santikeā€ti. and has drawn near to extinguishment.ā€

Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti. This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
