JÄgariyasutta Wake Up
VuttaƱhetaį¹ bhagavatÄ vuttamarahatÄti me sutaį¹: This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.
āJÄgaro cassa, bhikkhave, bhikkhu vihareyya sato sampajÄno samÄhito pamudito vippasanno ca tattha kÄlavipassÄ« ca kusalesu dhammesu. āA mendicant should meditate wakeful, mendicants, mindful and aware, joyful and clear, and at times discern the skillful qualities in that state.
JÄgarassa, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno viharato satassa sampajÄnassa samÄhitassa pamuditassa vippasannassa tattha kÄlavipassino kusalesu dhammesu dvinnaį¹ phalÄnaį¹ aƱƱataraį¹ phalaį¹ pÄį¹ikaį¹
khaį¹āA mendicant who meditates in this way can expect one of two results:
diį¹į¹heva dhamme aƱƱÄ, sati vÄ upÄdisese anÄgÄmitÄāti. enlightenment in this very life, or if thereās something left over, non-return.ā
Etamatthaį¹ bhagavÄ avoca. The Buddha spoke this matter.
Tatthetaį¹ iti vuccati: On this it is said:
āJÄgarantÄ suį¹Äthetaį¹, āListen up, wakeful ones!
ye suttÄ te pabujjhatha; And those asleep, wake up!
SuttÄ jÄgaritaį¹ seyyo, Wakefulness is better than sleep,
natthi jÄgarato bhayaį¹. the wakeful have nothing to fear.
Yo jÄgaro ca satimÄ sampajÄno, Those who are wakeful, mindful and aware,
SamÄhito mudito vippasanno ca; immersed in samÄdhi, joyful and clear,
KÄlena so sammÄ dhammaį¹ parivÄ«maį¹samÄno, rightly investigating the Dhamma in good time,
EkodibhÅ«to vihane tamaį¹ so. at one, would banish the darkness.
TasmÄ have jÄgariyaį¹ bhajetha, Thatās why you should apply yourself to wakefulness.
ÄtÄpÄ« bhikkhu nipako jhÄnalÄbhÄ«; A keen and alert mendicant, possessing absorption,
Saį¹yojanaį¹ jÄtijarÄya chetvÄ, having cut the fetter of birth and old age,
Idheva sambodhimanuttaraį¹ phuseāti. would experience supreme awakening in this very life.ā
Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatÄ, iti me sutanti. This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
