VuttaƱhetaį¹ bhagavatÄ vuttamarahatÄti me sutaį¹: This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.
āDvÄ«hi, bhikkhave, diį¹į¹higatehi pariyuį¹į¹hitÄ devamanussÄ olÄ«yanti eke, atidhÄvanti eke; cakkhumanto ca passanti. āOvercome by two misconceptions, mendicants, some gods and humans get stuck, some overreach, while those with vision see.
KathaƱca, bhikkhave, olīyanti eke? And how do some get stuck?
BhavÄrÄmÄ, bhikkhave, devamanussÄ bhavaratÄ bhavasammuditÄ tesaį¹ bhavanirodhÄya dhamme desiyamÄne cittaį¹ na pakkhandati na pasÄ«dati na santiį¹į¹hati nÄdhimuccati. Because of love, delight, and enjoyment of existence, when the Dhamma is being taught for the cessation of existence, the minds of some gods and humans do not leap forth, gain confidence, settle down, and become decided.
Evaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, olÄ«yanti eke. That is how some get stuck.
KathaƱca, bhikkhave, atidhÄvanti eke? And how do some overreach?
Bhaveneva kho paneke aį¹į¹Ä«yamÄnÄ harÄyamÄnÄ jigucchamÄnÄ vibhavaį¹ abhinandantiāSome, becoming horrified, repelled, and disgusted with existence, delight in ending existence:
yato kira, bho, ayaį¹ attÄ kÄyassa bhedÄ paraį¹ maraį¹Ä ucchijjati vinassati na hoti paraį¹ maraį¹Ä; āWhen this self is annihilated and destroyed when the body breaks up, and doesnāt exist after death:
etaį¹ santaį¹ etaį¹ paį¹Ä«taį¹ etaį¹ yÄthÄvanti. that is peaceful, that is sublime, that is how it is.ā
Evaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, atidhÄvanti eke. That is how some overreach.
KathaƱca, bhikkhave, cakkhumanto passanti? And how do those with vision see?
Idha bhikkhu bhÅ«taį¹ bhÅ«tato passati; Itās when a mendicant sees what has come to be as having come to be.
bhÅ«taį¹ bhÅ«tato disvÄ bhÅ«tassa nibbidÄya virÄgÄya nirodhÄya paį¹ipanno hoti. Seeing this, they are practicing for disillusionment, dispassion, and cessation regarding what has come to be.
Evaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, cakkhumanto passantÄ«āti. That is how those with vision see.ā
Etamatthaį¹ bhagavÄ avoca. The Buddha spoke this matter.
Tatthetaį¹ iti vuccati: On this it is said:
āYe bhÅ«taį¹ bhÅ«tato disvÄ, āThose who see what has come to be as having come to be,
bhÅ«tassa ca atikkamaį¹; and see the transcendence of what has come to be,
YathÄbhÅ«te vimuccanti, are freed in accord with the truth,
bhavataį¹hÄ parikkhayÄ. with the ending of craving for continued existence.
Sa ve bhÅ«tapariƱƱo so, They completely understand what has come to be,
vÄ«tataį¹ho bhavÄbhave; rid of craving for rebirth in this or that state,
BhÅ«tassa vibhavÄ bhikkhu, with the disappearance of what has come to be,
nÄgacchati punabbhavanāti. a mendicant does not come back to future lives.ā
Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatÄ, iti me sutanti. This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.

Dve indriyÄ dve tapanÄ«yÄ,
sīlena apare duve;
AnottÄpÄ« kuhanÄ dve ca,
saį¹vejanÄ«yena te dasa.
VitakkÄ desanÄ vijjÄ,
paĆ±Ć±Ä dhammena paƱcamaį¹;
AjÄtaį¹ dhÄtusallÄnaį¹,
sikkhÄ jÄgariyena ca;
ApÄyadiį¹į¹hiyÄ ceva,
bÄvÄ«sati pakÄsitÄti.
