VuttaƱhetaį¹ bhagavatÄ vuttamarahatÄti me sutaį¹: This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.
āTisso imÄ, bhikkhave, esanÄ. āMendicants, there are these three searches.
KatamÄ tisso? What three?
KÄmesanÄ, bhavesanÄ, brahmacariyesanÄāThe search for sensual pleasures, the search for continued existence, and the search for a spiritual path.
imÄ kho, bhikkhave, tisso esanÄāti. These are the three searches.ā
Etamatthaį¹ bhagavÄ avoca. The Buddha spoke this matter.
Tatthetaį¹ iti vuccati: On this it is said:
āKÄmesanÄ bhavesanÄ, āThe search for sensual pleasures, for a good rebirth,
brahmacariyesanÄ saha; and the search for a spiritual path;
Iti saccaparÄmÄso, the holding tight to the thought, āthis is the truthā,
diį¹į¹hiį¹į¹hÄnÄ samussayÄ. and the mass of grounds for viewsā
SabbarÄgavirattassa, for one detached from all lusts,
taį¹hakkhayavimuttino; freed by the ending of craving,
EsanÄ paį¹inissaį¹į¹hÄ, that searching has been relinquished,
diį¹į¹hiį¹į¹hÄnÄ samÅ«hatÄ; and those viewpoints eradicated.
EsanÄnaį¹ khayÄ bhikkhu, With the ending of searches, a mendicant
nirÄso akathaį¹
kathÄ«āti. is free of hope and indecision.ā
Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatÄ, iti me sutanti. This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
