Paį¹hamaÄsavasutta Defilements (1st)
VuttaƱhetaį¹ bhagavatÄ vuttamarahatÄti me sutaį¹: This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.
āTayome, bhikkhave, ÄsavÄ. āMendicants, there are these three defilements.
Katame tayo? What three?
KÄmÄsavo, bhavÄsavo, avijjÄsavoāThe defilements of sensuality, desire to be reborn, and ignorance.
ime kho, bhikkhave, tayo ÄsavÄāti. These are the three defilements.ā
Etamatthaį¹ bhagavÄ avoca. The Buddha spoke this matter.
Tatthetaį¹ iti vuccati: On this it is said:
āSamÄhito sampajÄno, āStilled, aware,
sato buddhassa sÄvako; a mindful disciple of the Buddha
Äsave ca pajÄnÄti, understands defilements,
ÄsavÄnaƱca sambhavaį¹. the cause of defilements,
Yattha cetÄ nirujjhanti, where they cease,
maggaƱca khayagÄminaį¹; and the path that leads to their ending.
ÄsavÄnaį¹ khayÄ bhikkhu, With the ending of defilements, a mendicant
nicchÄto parinibbutoāti. is hungerless, quenched.ā
Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatÄ, iti me sutanti. This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
