Dutiyaāsavasutta Defilements (2nd)

VuttaƱhetaį¹ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaį¹: This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.

ā€œTayome, bhikkhave, āsavā. ā€œMendicants, there are these three defilements.

Katame tayo? What three?

Kāmāsavo, bhavāsavo, avijjāsavoā€”The defilements of sensuality, desire to be reborn, and ignorance.

ime kho, bhikkhave, tayo āsavāā€ti. These are the three defilements.ā€

Etamatthaį¹ bhagavā avoca. The Buddha spoke this matter.

Tatthetaį¹ iti vuccati: On this it is said:

ā€œYassa kāmāsavo khÄ«į¹‡o, ā€œOne who has ended the defilement of sensuality,

avijjā ca virājitā; whose ignorance has faded away,

Bhavāsavo parikkhÄ«į¹‡o, and whose desire to be reborn is finishedā€”

vippamutto nirūpadhi; liberated, free of attachments,

Dhāreti antimaį¹ dehaį¹, they bear their final body,

jetvā māraį¹ savāhininā€ti. having vanquished Māra and his mount.ā€

Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti. This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
