VuttaƱhetaį¹ bhagavatÄ vuttamarahatÄti me sutaį¹: This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.
āTayome, bhikkhave, ÄsavÄ. āMendicants, there are these three defilements.
Katame tayo? What three?
KÄmÄsavo, bhavÄsavo, avijjÄsavoāThe defilements of sensuality, desire to be reborn, and ignorance.
ime kho, bhikkhave, tayo ÄsavÄāti. These are the three defilements.ā
Etamatthaį¹ bhagavÄ avoca. The Buddha spoke this matter.
Tatthetaį¹ iti vuccati: On this it is said:
āYassa kÄmÄsavo khÄ«į¹o, āOne who has ended the defilement of sensuality,
avijjÄ ca virÄjitÄ; whose ignorance has faded away,
BhavÄsavo parikkhÄ«į¹o, and whose desire to be reborn is finishedā
vippamutto nirūpadhi; liberated, free of attachments,
DhÄreti antimaį¹ dehaį¹, they bear their final body,
jetvÄ mÄraį¹ savÄhinināti. having vanquished MÄra and his mount.ā
Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatÄ, iti me sutanti. This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
