Taį¹hÄsutta Craving
VuttaƱhetaį¹ bhagavatÄ vuttamarahatÄti me sutaį¹: This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.
āTisso imÄ, bhikkhave, taį¹hÄ. āMendicants, there are these three cravings.
KatamÄ tisso? What three?
KÄmataį¹hÄ, bhavataį¹hÄ, vibhavataį¹hÄāCraving for sensual pleasures, craving to continue existence, and craving to end existence.
imÄ kho, bhikkhave, tisso taį¹hÄāti. These are the three cravings.ā
Etamatthaį¹ bhagavÄ avoca. The Buddha spoke this matter.
Tatthetaį¹ iti vuccati: On this it is said:
āTaį¹hÄyogena saį¹yuttÄ, āBound by craving, minds full of desire
rattacittÄ bhavÄbhave; for rebirth in this or that state,
Te yogayuttÄ mÄrassa, yoked by MÄraās yoke, these people
ayogakkhemino janÄ; find no sanctuary from the yoke.
SattÄ gacchanti saį¹sÄraį¹, Sentient beings continue to transmigrate,
jÄtÄ«maraį¹agÄmino. with ongoing birth and death.
Ye ca taį¹haį¹ pahantvÄna, Those who have given up craving,
vÄ«tataį¹hÄ bhavÄbhave; rid of craving for rebirth in this or that state,
Te ve pÄraį¹
gatÄ loke, they in this world have truly crossed over,
ye pattÄ Äsavakkhayanāti. having reached the ending of defilements.ā
Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatÄ, iti me sutanti. This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
