Tikanipāta The Book of the Threes

Paį¹hamavagga Chapter One

Taį¹‡hāsutta Craving

VuttaƱhetaį¹ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaį¹: This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.

ā€œTisso imā, bhikkhave, taį¹‡hā. ā€œMendicants, there are these three cravings.

Katamā tisso? What three?

Kāmataį¹‡hā, bhavataį¹‡hā, vibhavataį¹‡hāā€”Craving for sensual pleasures, craving to continue existence, and craving to end existence.

imā kho, bhikkhave, tisso taį¹‡hāā€ti. These are the three cravings.ā€

Etamatthaį¹ bhagavā avoca. The Buddha spoke this matter.

Tatthetaį¹ iti vuccati: On this it is said:

ā€œTaį¹‡hāyogena saį¹yuttā, ā€œBound by craving, minds full of desire

rattacittā bhavābhave; for rebirth in this or that state,

Te yogayuttā mārassa, yoked by Māraā€™s yoke, these people

ayogakkhemino janā; find no sanctuary from the yoke.

Sattā gacchanti saį¹sāraį¹, Sentient beings continue to transmigrate,

jātÄ«maraį¹‡agāmino. with ongoing birth and death.

Ye ca taį¹‡haį¹ pahantvāna, Those who have given up craving,

vÄ«tataį¹‡hā bhavābhave; rid of craving for rebirth in this or that state,

Te ve pāraį¹…gatā loke, they in this world have truly crossed over,

ye pattā āsavakkhayanā€ti. having reached the ending of defilements.ā€

Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti. This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.

Navamaį¹.
