Paį¹­hamarāgasutta Greed (1st)

VuttaƱhetaį¹ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaį¹: This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.

ā€œYassa kassaci, bhikkhave, rāgo appahÄ«no, doso appahÄ«no, moho appahÄ«noā€”ā€œWhoever has not given up greed, hate, and delusion

ayaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, ā€˜baddho mārassa paį¹­imukkassa mārapāso yathākāmakaraį¹‡Ä«yo pāpimatoā€™. is said to be trapped. Theyā€™re caught in Māraā€™s snare, and the Wicked One can do with them what he wants.

Yassa kassaci, bhikkhave, rāgo pahÄ«no, doso pahÄ«no, moho pahÄ«noā€”Whoever has given up greed, hate, and delusion

ayaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, ā€˜abaddho mārassa omukkassa mārapāso na yathākāmakaraį¹‡Ä«yo pāpimatoā€™ā€ti. is said to be free. Theyā€™re released from Māraā€™s snare, and the Wicked One cannot do with them what he wants.ā€

Etamatthaį¹ bhagavā avoca. The Buddha spoke this matter.

Tatthetaį¹ iti vuccati: On this it is said:

ā€œYassa rāgo ca doso ca, ā€œThose in whom greed, hate, and ignorance

avijjā ca virājitā; have faded away,

Taį¹ bhāvitattaƱƱataraį¹, belong with those who are evolved;

brahmabhÅ«taį¹ tathāgataį¹; A manifestation of divinity, realized,

Buddhaį¹ verabhayātÄ«taį¹, awakened, beyond enmity and fear,

āhu sabbappahāyinanā€ti. theyā€™ve given up everything, they say.ā€

Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti. This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
