Tatiyavagga Chapter Three

Micchādiį¹į¹hikasutta Having Wrong View

VuttaƱhetaį¹ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaį¹: This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.

ā€œDiį¹į¹hā mayā, bhikkhave, sattā kāyaduccaritena samannāgatā vacÄ«duccaritena samannāgatā manoduccaritena samannāgatā ariyānaį¹ upavādakā micchādiį¹į¹hikā micchādiį¹į¹hikammasamādānā. ā€œMendicants, Iā€™ve seen beings who engaged in misconduct by body, speech, and mind, who denounced the noble ones, who had wrong views and acted accordingly.

Te kāyassa bhedā paraį¹ maraį¹‡Ä apāyaį¹ duggatiį¹ vinipātaį¹ nirayaį¹ upapannā. At the breaking up of the body, after death, they were reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell.

Taį¹ kho panāhaį¹, bhikkhave, nāƱƱassa samaį¹‡assa vā brāhmaį¹‡assa vā sutvā vadāmi. Now, I donā€™t say this because Iā€™ve heard it from some other ascetic or brahmin.

Diį¹į¹hā mayā, bhikkhave, sattā kāyaduccaritena samannāgatā vacÄ«duccaritena samannāgatā manoduccaritena samannāgatā ariyānaį¹ upavādakā micchādiį¹į¹hikā micchādiį¹į¹hikammasamādānā.

Te kāyassa bhedā paraį¹ maraį¹‡Ä apāyaį¹ duggatiį¹ vinipātaį¹ nirayaį¹ upapannā.

Api ca, bhikkhave, yadeva sāmaį¹ Ʊātaį¹ sāmaį¹ diį¹į¹haį¹ sāmaį¹ viditaį¹ tadevāhaį¹ vadāmi. I only say it because Iā€™ve known, seen, and realized it for myself.ā€

Diį¹į¹hā mayā, bhikkhave, sattā kāyaduccaritena samannāgatā vacÄ«duccaritena samannāgatā manoduccaritena samannāgatā ariyānaį¹ upavādakā micchādiį¹į¹hikā micchādiį¹į¹hikammasamādānā.

Te kāyassa bhedā paraį¹ maraį¹‡Ä apāyaį¹ duggatiį¹ vinipātaį¹ nirayaį¹ upapannāā€ti.

Etamatthaį¹ bhagavā avoca. The Buddha spoke this matter.

Tatthetaį¹ iti vuccati: On this it is said:

ā€œMicchā manaį¹ paį¹‡idhāya, ā€œWhen the mind has been misdirected,

micchā vācaƱca bhāsiya; and words wrongly spoken,

Micchā kammāni katvāna, and wrong bodily deeds have been done,

kāyena idha puggalo. a person here

AppassutāpuƱƱakaro, unlearned, doer of bad deeds,

appasmiį¹ idha jÄ«vite; though their life may be short,

Kāyassa bhedā duppaƱƱo, when their body breaks up, that witless person

nirayaį¹ sopapajjatÄ«ā€ti. is reborn in hell.ā€

Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti. This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.

Paį¹hamaį¹.
